Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

Our friends and family have been incredibly generous and kind with their gifts to us in celebration of our marriage - and I have to say that most of them figured out the Amazon registry just fine! Although people did gravitate towards our (very small) Crate & Barrel registry the most, and thus cleaned it out. Perhaps because C&B is considered more wedding-y?

Aaaanyway. This story is about a gift that was not on a registry. Our most novel wedding gift (thus far! Wouldn’t want to ruin anyone’s chances of gifting us something even more crazy) is the gift Mr. GP’s friend JK got us:

Our Most Unique Wedding Gift Yet : wedding baltimore gift ideas Machete machete

(why yes, that is a machete)

A double handed machete, in fact. Nothing say,  “I’m so glad you’re getting married!” like gifting your friend a giant lethal weapon!

I think it’s hilarious, of course - and what’s even more funny is seeing Mr. GP’s face light up when someone new comes over to the house and he gets to say, “Want to see my two-handed machete?!” Especially when the other person is my dad, and his face lights up in response. Dad GP then had this reaction when he got to give it a test run:

Our Most Unique Wedding Gift Yet : wedding baltimore gift ideas Dad Mac dad_mac

(my dad looking up at my mom on the patio right before saying “I’ve got to have one of these!”)

After all, who doesn’t need one… to… um. What are we going to do with it, again? Oh right, we definitely need to throw it at broken pieces of fencing. Yup, that’s what it’s for!

Our Most Unique Wedding Gift Yet : wedding baltimore gift ideas Funwit fun+wit

(Did I mention my motorcycle was like 2 feet away?)

Mr. Guinea Pig and my dad then spent 20 minutes finding things they could chop down in our (admittedly overgrown) back yard. Maple tree saplings growing under our deck, mushrooms, and the tree stump in our yard? You can bet those suckers are long gone.

In a rather humorous gesture (which I’m sure was designed to appease me), JK also got us a lovely bamboo cutting board - perhaps we should use the machete to chop veggies on our new cutting board?* :D

*Considering it is an incredibly sharp blade, which cut through some of the metal chain link behind the wooden fence in the above photos, my guess is that not only would the machete do a wonderful job of cutting the vegetables, but would also cut straight through our island/counter.

Anyone else gotten some fun/unique/crazy gifts for their wedding? Did you love it anyway? :)

I love that you have a motorcycle!

As far as creative gifts… I have one friend who received a Fontanini nativity scene starter set for her wedding and has been adding figures to it ever since. It’s a good standby for a creative, heirloom-y kind of gift for Christian friends who’s registries are lacking.

Haha. That’s amazing. We got two sets of dog “hiking boots” for our dogs from a friend. My fiance didn’t want to register unless we could also set up a registry at REI…

I have no words. OMG. Ridiculousness.
I do have a story though: There was this kid in my high school named Eddie. He wore baggy pants and one day they found him carrying a machete in his pants. He was forever known as “Machete Eddie”.

You should relate to this, then: my (now) brother-in-law gave me a pair of nunchucks for Christmas a couple of years back. Not only was it an odd gift, but come dorm room inspection time, I was summoned in to meet with the Dean of Students for “harboring a weapon” in my dorm room. I was only mildly miffed and mostly amused. Sounds like you’re about the same ;)

I’ve only received friends’ skills (with hair, for example) and one Honeyfund donation, but I’ll take creative over an enormous dish set we don’t need!

Furthermore, your dad looks A LOT like FIL Taco. Nutty!

Hahahahhaha, GP, this is friggin awesome. Put that thing away on margarita nights or your coat racks, houseplants, tall lamps and bannisters might be toast!
