About Mrs. Pin Cushion

This Venue’s Too…

May 27th, 2010 @ 1:59 pm by Mrs. Pin Cushion

Why must the first wedding decision you have to make –the venue– be the decision with the most long-term consequences? Your venue dictates the ’feel’ of your wedding, if it’s going to be outdoors or inside, how many people you can invite, and so many more important issues! It seems that you should be eased into weddings… like choosing your cake flavors first!

After the Pin-ster and I had been engaged for about 9 months, we decided it was (finally) time to crack down on the venue choice. We scoped out locations online and narrowed our options down from approximately one kajillion to a handful of possible locations. We didn’t call ahead, or set up any appointments to meet with coordinators. We just winged it (wung it?) on our own, rogue-style.

Our first stop was Hacienda de las Flores in Moraga (due east of Berkeley). The location was beautiful, flowers were blooming everywhere (I guess the “Flores” part of their name is true), and the grass was Wizard of Oz-technicolor green.

The ceremony site (set up for an upcoming wedding)

Looking good, my man!

The inside was small (yes, we snuck in… the door was open [shh, don’t tell])

Though the site was very pretty, as the sun moved overhead, it got hot. Shirt-sticking-to-your-back hot. And we just not going for the “very very dewy look” on our wedding day. Moraga can get hot as Hades in the summer, so after checking the place out, we decided that… this venue’s TOO HOT.

We took our dripping selves back to the car to head to the next stop (after re-fueling at Taco Bell for some double decker tacos!). Piedmont Community Hall is a city owned (read: bargain price) location which looked promising.

You can have your ceremony in front of the groovy fountain.

The reception area looked bodacious. Big windows, high ceilings, old chandeliers. (Photo taken spy-style [through the windows], due to the whole not-calling-ahead thing.)

The Pin Cushions liked the Community Hall, but we didn’t like that being city-owned, it was open to the public. That meant that during our wedding, we could have extra ’guests’ (strangers) roaming by our ceremony, or peeking their heads into our reception. That was a deal breaker for us. So, this venue’s… TOO CROWDED.

Lastly, along Highway 1, we visited Cypress Meadows in Half Moon Bay. It looked promising on the website. I’ll show you the photos we saw of the site online first:

Fab view during the day

and the night. Wowza! [Source for both]

Now here is what the location looked like when we visited. You might noticed a slight difference between their photos and ours…

The view when you drive up to the site. It looked just like a house to us.

And in the back, instead of an awesome view, we found this (after peering over a fence)…

Lots and lots of fog

We should have known that with the site being right along the coast, fog could be a big problem. We got there in the early evening and it was frigid already. So, Mr. Pin Cushion and I decided that… this venue’s too FOGGY!

After a day of “not-quite-right” locations, we were a bit discouraged. Did any of you find sites that you liked, but something was not quite right? What were venue deal breakers for you?

@ktisthatbees: LOL! Couldn’t have said it better myself! I did have an eye opening moment about the place in half moon bay from website to reality. Yikes!

We were at a wedding near Moraga in July last summer, and I was MELTING!! I could feel myself burning. And it took us awhile to get there too…not cool when your have a toddler and 2-month-old baby with you.

And Half Moon Bay…when is it not foggy? For some crazy reason, we have tried to have so many beach parties there, but always ended up freezing our butts off.

Can’t wait to see the venue you chose!! We also didn’t call ahead.

i also visited a venue in half moon bay and the person told me that light fog can actually help with pictures sometimes since people aren’t looking into the sun and squinting! of course, if the fog is so bad that you can’t see anything in front of you…no good. but just something to consider. we didn’t end up going w/ the place, the main reason being that it was too far from the south bay.

hahaha…we just got back from visiting two places today that had their “too ____” moments! Actually I think we’ve visited about 7 places so far (after searching online and looking at hundreds) and they’ve all been too hot or too public or too chancey with the rain or too expensive. But I don’t want to settle! What’s a girl to do?????

@MOHmama: Is it bad that I feel slightly vindicated for not having chosen the moraga site, since you verified how hot it can get?!?

@princessleia: It can be totally overwhelming looking at all the options online. Don’t settle! I’m sure they’re something great out there for you!

Erg. Venue search! I totally agree with your first statement. I really feel like this should be one of the later things i am choosing, not the first!!
I literally just finished doing my umpteenth online search for venue locations as the fiance and i are visiting two more (already seen 8!) this weekend. Very hard to find a place that is “just right”.. particularly when you are getting married in the spring in a very very very rainy city and the outdoors is totally out!

Venue #2 was very cool. Why the heck don’t they allow people to hold PRIVATE events? Most municipal places here will exclude the general public for their renters.

ooh, hacienda is on my list of venues. what time of year did you go? i know it can be super hot that far east so i was hoping it’d be manageable in sept/oct.

@tea: I went in August, and it was definitely hot. But I think late September or October would be okay. As long as there’s not an Indian Summer!

Ahh! One of my pet peeves is when venues fudge just how super-fab they are online.

This is so helpful since these are all locations that we’ve considered!

we went around judging venues on their bathrooms! we had to make a concession with our venue, the restrooms are not just for the event space but also for the restaurant and the hotel lobby.

@Berkeley_Bride: Oh, hopefully I brought some insight that might help you with your search! Let me know where you end up picking! I liked the Brazil Room too, in Tilden, but it was booked.

@violarulz: Why bathrooms?? What was the best bathroom you saw and why was it so awesome?
