About Mrs. Trail Mix

Check Out That Package

May 27th, 2010 @ 1:01 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

With only two weeks left until the wedding, there have been loads of presents arriving on our doorstep almost daily (hence my first-name relationship with our UPS man. I think he likes me because we live on a 5th-floor walk-up and I always walk down a flight or two to meet him because he’s really old and I always worry he won’t be able to make it up all the stairs!).

Anyways, trusty UPS man showed up the other day with this box.

Sweetness, I thought. Wonder what it is?

Could it be a lovely, wooden bowl, perfect for housing salads and Halloween candy?

Nope, it wasn’t the salad bowl…

Or maybe it’s this pretty blue pan, just waiting for me to bake a yummy apple pie (HA! That, my friends, will probably never happen.)

Another good guess but incorrect again.

Alright, are you ready to see what was actually in this box? Check it…

I kid you not, that entire box housed…wait for it, wait for it…an ice cream scoop!

To put it in perspective, here’s a shot taken a step back so you can see how ridiculously big the box was compared to the scoop (it’s a normal ice cream scoop here, people, not a jumbo-sized one. Although, let’s be honest, a jumbo ice cream scoop would be pretty freakin’ awesome).

Check Out That Package : wedding albany registry Blogst04 Blog+St04

Please don’t misunderstand this post, I am in no way knocking the gift because, well, I eat ice cream like it’s my mutha-f$#&ng job. For real. Trying to scoop it out with a spoon is annoying because the spoon always bends backwards and truth be told, I was secretly really really hoping someone would get this for us when I put it on our registry. It also goes perfectly with our ice-cream maker (which we also got. Yeah, like I said before, I’m a piggie-wiggie about ice cream and everyone knows it! :) ).

Plus, the scoop was actually part of a 3-part gift (the pie pan and a kitchen timer were also part of the present) but get this: They came in their own separate packages. Oh, the irony.

I totally get that William Sonoma has to make sure their products arrive in good condition, but seriously, folks over there? The 2-foot box was probably a little bit of overkill but y’all can rest assured that my solid, metal ice cream scoop arrived at my doorstep with nary a scratch.

Anyways, it makes for a hilarious story but my inner-hippie is giving me some guilt pangs over all the packaging and waste that our wedding is creating. It’s not that I haven’t tried to keep things green when possible, I have, I really have, I swear! But with all my DIY projects and paper products and favors and the shipping of gifts, there’s definitely a significant amount of stuff going in our trash (and recycling bins, when possible!)

And so, in order to somehow assuage this guilt, I’ve decided that we will be donating a percentage of our gift money to an environmental organization, although I have not figured out which one yet (any suggestions would be welcome). I know it doesn’t equal the amount of waste we’ve created but every little bit helps and I’ll sleep better at night.

Have you received gifts in ridiculous packaging? I know Miss Hot Wings has! And what are you doing to keep your wedding green and low-impact?

We order from Office Depot at work all of the time, and they will put one box of staples in a package like that. It’s seriously ridiculous.

On another note, I just purchased an ice cream maker yesterday. Yum.

williams sonoma obviously thinks that ice cream scoop is very, very precious. which it is, but that is a funny, guilt-inducing amount of packaging! i’m with you on the ice cream eating job, by the way.

I’m so glad you posted this. That pictures is awesome…. awesomely funny and awesomely bad. I like your idea of donating to an org afterwards. I’m curious what places people recommend. We’re using all our boxes for moving right now, but events in general produce a lot of waste.

Yes, Bed Bath and Beyond sent all of our gifts this way. It started to get really annoying because we filled up our recycling bin about a day after it was emptied, then had to stash everything in the garage for another week until it got emptied again. Not to mention all of the wasted supplies!

Our best one was a box like that for a tiny 2 inch high garlic grater! I kid you not!

How about saving the boxes + packaging and posting on craigslist for someone to use in their move?
I’m sure those boxes and ridiculous over-packaging would have a wonderful second life helping someone move house!

YES! You succesfully made me laugh out loud at work…..So funny. I always a mystery to me what these companies are thinking when they are packaging…..”this icecream scoop is pretty fragile, lets bubble wrap it twice, pack it in foam, and put it in a box we use when we ship an expresso maker….” I have not had the fortune of getting a gift packed this way, but now I am looking forward to it! Thanks so much for poasting this!!

i think you should leave them feedback. I was appalled that Amazon sent me 2 memory cards in super overkill packaging too!

Maybe try http://www.carbonfund.org/ ? I think we’re going to do that as our “gift” instead of an actual gift for our guests, since over half are coming from out of town.

In addition to the above suggestions, I would send a copy of that picture to Williams-Sonoma and let them know you’re aghast at their packaging excess.

How about donating towards the animals that have been affected by the oil spill? I’ve seen donations websites out there but can’t recall off the top of my head at the moment.

WOW that is ridiculous. I am really neurotic about recycling packaging. I’m lucky enough to have a nice little storage space where I can keep broken down boxes - so I never have to buy boxes when I need to send a gift or pack up to move. I’ll definitely be sticking to that when I start getting my wedding gifts!

Wow- that is unbelievable! I agree with Coffeecake; you (we all!) should send WS a letter pointing out how wasteful their packaging is.

As fellow NY-er’s, we’re planning to make a donation here in leui of favors:

That is seriously crazy!! I would think they forgot to put something else in the box, because no way would they use such a large box for just an ice cream scoop. But clearly I’m wrong.
