About Mrs. Oyster

For the past few months, as I’ve stared at my increasingly unruly students, listening to them scream at each other (and sometimes at me) and make a lot of noise, I’ve wished for summer and occasionally given in to daydreams about sitting on the sand, sipping some colorful cocktail while listening to the waves.

And hopefully I’m not too far off in my fantasy — our honeymoon destination is Kauai, Hawaii! We can’t wait. At this point, with wedding anxiety looming and the general stress of the last weeks of the school year, I can only think of the honeymoon in abstract terms. But I did think enough to order a new swimsuit!

Six years ago, I splurged on a swimsuit that has served me incredibly well. The black, wrap style V-neck Miraclesuit I purchased has been an incredible workhorse; it fits great and supports me in all the right places. But it’s just now starting to fall apart, so I splurged again (hey, once every 6 years isn’t too bad!) and purchased another. I got this little beauty from Lane Bryant:

What to Wear? [It's a Miracle] : wedding dallas dress honeymoon Mclstga mclstga

It’s called the “Garden of Delight” Oceanus Miraclesuit. I liked the idea of a neutral-ish, black floral suit. It fits great! However, the actual pattern is completely different, and looks like this one from Cyberswim. Hmm. Good thing I like fluorescent pink.

I also bought this adorable cover-up to throw on. It isn’t nearly as A-line as it looks in the picture, but it’s still cute. Plus, that little spot of pink matches perfectly with my surprise-pink patterned suit.

from (Lane Bryant)

If you’re getting married this summer and you want to take advantage of the upcoming Memorial Day swimsuit sales, I thought I’d pass along a few other links to plus-size swimwear that I found. Besides, I am in the market for a second suit — that deep V of my new suit is honeymoon perfect, but too revealing to wear at our day-after swim party.

If you want a Miraclesuit, Nordstrom has about two this season. Lane Bryant has a slightly better selection, but the best I found is at Cyberswim.

If you happen to be in the 24-26 size range, Land’s End has a great selection of suits. Also the site Swimsuits For All looks good (up to 32W). But the most honeymoon-ready selection appears to be at AlwaysForMe.com. I personally prefer well-built, super supportive swimwear, but I can’t resist all those cute, colorful, sexy suits in sizes up to 26.

This seems like the most choice I’ve had in swimsuits in a while! I can’t wait to jump into the water!

If you’re a plus size, where did you find your honeymoon outfits?

We spent our honeymoon in Kauai and it was beautiful! A little rainy, but that’s what we get for going in March.

I got a great swimsuit at Fashion Bug! They have nice plus-size clothing! I bought alot of my honeymoon attire from Old Navy. And my mother has been buying me alot of things from QVC.com. This is my favorite honeymoon item so far! http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/view.2/app.detail/params.CM_SCID.coll.item.A94692.desc.M-by-Marc-Bouwer-Sleeveless-Tunic-with-Embellishment

I am a street size 26-28 (i may be in denial and by a 28-30) But the 3x fits me perfect!

thinking about honeymoon bathing suits motivates me to run! I actually just bought a couple of new suits for my friend’s wedding in Jamaica but since my luggage didn’t mak it I had to buy a new one in the girt shop wich had a selection of about 5 styles. Now that I think about it, they didn’t have a single plus sized option so make sure you put your suit in your carryon! I don’t want to scare you but I know from experience gift shops are not the place to find the most flattering swi suits and I’m sure there are some terrible pictures of me in my last minute purchase, luckily my friends like me enough to spare me from seing them!

@Slicey: I totally understand. I quit checking luggage about 5 years ago and am trying to convince Mr. Oyster to do the same.

The problem is that since the airlines are charging for every checked bag, the planes’ overhead compartments are packed and you might not have a choice! So everything is in the carryons, but if we’re forced to gate-check our luggage… well, then I will really freak out!

@aimee: Those are great suggestions, too! I wear a 26 now but fit into the 24W Miraclesuits just fine, even with a little room. My previous Miraclesuit was a 22W, and I wore it for 6 years during which I was anywhere from 18 to a 24.

lately for some odd reason i have been finding super cute dresses at ross and all for less than 20. i just bought 3 dresses because i wasn’t sure which one i wanted to wear to a friend’s wedding. 2 were for 12 a piece and the 3rd one was only 17. so i been buying tons of clothes there since it seems like their plus size selection is getting so much better. but i still love old navy for everything. i just wish they didn’t stop carrying the plus size in the store though.

How have I never heard of this? No matter what size we are, a girl can always use a little help looking a little more toned :) Are these bathing suits only available in plus sizes?

I ended up ordering from Kohl’s and JCPenney online. I couldn’t find anything in an actual store that wasn’t just a granny-style patterned swimdress or a non-flattering tank & shorts swimset.

I ended up with some really cute tankini tops that didn’t make me look preggo, but didn’t stick to “Mah Belly!” when I got in/out of the water! I got 4 tankini tops, high-waist bikini bottoms, a one-piece for snorkeling, a swim skirt and swim shorts for less than $200- with shipping!

The best part was they each had a great mix & match selection, because I like to wear a 18W top and a 16W bottom.

I ordered a bunch of stuff from Swimsuits for All, but I returned them all and never wore- I liked the cheaper stuff better!

Great post, Ms. Oyster!

I also wanted to mention that Land’s end sell swim suits specifically for women with DD and DDD cup size. This was a life saver for me before I had my breast reduction surgery. The only sqwim suit I could find that would fit me!

I just wanted to say “HI” to a fellow teacher! I’ve been finding myself daydreaming about summer too and need to evaluate my bathing suit options as well. Have fun in Hawaii, nice choice!

We were in Kauai for our honeymoon!! You will LOVE LOVE LOVE it. So relaxing, and no rushing anywhere. They run on island time and it is awesome. Make sure to try the shave ice place across the street from Waimea Canyon High School. Sorry to mention school. =p I can’t wait for my sister to finishing grades so I can kick her bride-to-be butt into high planning gear.
