I Want Candy: Part 1

May 28th, 2010 @ 2:09 pm by Mrs. Sunrise

One of the very first decisions that Mr. S and I made early on in our planning was that we would have candy favors. We wanted to give our guests something small and sweet that they could enjoy right away. Everyone likes candy, right? We looooove candy (and we have the fillings to prove it)!

I wanted to have a candy buffet and provide our guests with a nice variety of sweets, but alas, Mr. S didn’t agree. I held my ground and tried to convince him that it would be so cute and our guests would love it. I even showed him dozens of inspirational images like the gorgeous table below done by the fabulous Amy Atlas… but he still wasn’t buying it. I showed him more images. I argued. I begged. He still wouldn’t budge. I was so bummed. But I understood why he wasn’t digging the idea. Being the voice of reason, he reminded me that we didn’t need to be spending so much money on candy when we could be using that extra money towards other things, like hors d’oeuvres. Bulk candy can be so expensive! So he told me to pick just one type of candy to use as favors. Reallyyy?? No candy buffet?! *pouty face* But look how pretty…

Suffice it to say, I got over it fairly quickly. But then came the big decision… what kind of candy should we get?

I knew that I had a lot of options– there are so many types of sweets out there in candy land! But the hard part would be narrowing it down to one that we could both agree on. This task proved to be even more difficult because Mr. S wasn’t sure what he wanted, yet he was being super-picky about my choices.

Let’s see… we could do the traditional Jordan almonds. They’re very popular for weddings, and can be easily bought in pink and green to coordinate with our wedding colors. But we’re not really big fans of Jordan almonds, so that was quickly vetoed.

While browsing the web for other ideas, I came across these heart-shaped mints and I thought that they were kind of cute. They come in these bride and groom “Mint to Be” sliding tins. Adorable, right? But Mr. S said no way—they were “too cheesy”.

Since we were on the topic of heart-shaped candies, I threw out the idea of conversation hearts with sweet little messages. His response? “Ugh, they might as well eat chalk!”

Okay then, how about some jelly beans? Mr. S loves Jelly Belly beans so I knew that I was getting warmer. We could get them in green and pink flavors to match our colors. But when I suggested Green Apple and Strawberry Cheesecake, he shot me down. Fine, how about Watermelon and Bubble Gum? “Nope.” Kiwi and Cotton Candy? “Definitely not.”

Moving on… What about some Hershey’s Kisses? Ding ding ding!! I finally caught the sparkle in his eye. Who knew that all it took was a mention of chocolate? Delicious little chocolates wrapped in shiny foil. It looks like we have a winner, folks…

That was, until I came across this image of personalized m&ms! Ooohhh…

I Want Candy: Part 1 : wedding favors food minneapolis M26ms [source]

You mean I can get my name on a little m&m? In any color I want?? Wait, what? You can also put my face on an m&m? Yes, I want! I want! Tell me more! There are approximately 100 single servings per 10lb bulk order? And each 10lb box costs $250.00?! Wait a minute, so for about 200 guests, we would be spending $500.00 on little m&m’s??! Ummm…

At this point, we were unsure. I had already submitted a design and placed it in our shopping cart. It was all ready to go, just patiently waiting for the 16-digit number from my little magic swipey card. We reeaaaaally wanted the customized m&m’s, but they were way out of our budget. So I left the website and I decided to sleep on it. I thought about it and thought about it some more...

… Is it really worth $500 to have our faces printed on candy?

I wanted these SOOO badly too…but when I looked at the cost it was just out of range. I am doing my own hershey kisses, printing out my own cute little labels picture and all for about $50 for 150 favors. So much better than spending hundreds of dollars, plus they are still super cute!

I was able to find the bulk candy for my candy buffet through Oriental Trading company for less than $200 for a wedding of about 125 people. I would say if you are doing candy favors instead of a buffet, you probably aren’t saving anything by doing the personalized M&Ms. I have seen some personalized chocolate mints that were cheaper. I say keep shopping! Good luck!

Honestly for the same price as the M&Ms you could do a nice Candy Buffet. We are doing a Trick or Treat bar for 120 and getting away with it at $200-$300 max.

I LOVE the idea of personalized M&M’s but those bad boys do come at a hefty price. Can you order plain M & M’s in your wedding colors and just a few personalized ones and mix them all together? That’d be more cost efficient and then the personalized ones would be more fun for the guests to find in their little bags/boxes.

I bought all my candy at the easter clearance. I hope I ended up with enough. I wasn’t really picky about colors.

Ehh I thought about doing the M&Ms but to me they definitely weren’t worth the price! lol. Plus, the whole candy-thing wasn’t really us so we are using green apples with a leaf shaped tag as escort cards/favors. Double duty favors? score! lol

I’m struggling with deciding my favors too! Personalized m&ms are awesome, but the price tag definitely isn’t. Keep us in the loop as I’m hoping to steal, I mean borrow, more inspiration from you! :-)

Honestly? At $500 you might as well think about that candy buffet again….

…they do sell non-personalized ones for much less though. Good luck!!

Whenever I have something that’s unexpectedly expensive, I try to frame it in terms of what other wedding things I could do with that money, and which would give me more bang for the buck. Would my guests appreciate letterpressed RSVP cards more than another hour of open bar? Tall orchid centerpieces more than a luxury bus to drive them around the city? I think that’s what you need to ask yourself here - is there something else you’re looking at that you’d rather spend that $500 on (a photobooth, upgraded apps, etc) that people might notice more? If not, then go for it, but in my experience I’ve realized that everytime I’m questioning the cost, I’ve realized there’s somewhere else I’d rather spend the money. They’re super cute, but personally I’d either take the $500 and do a full candy bar or go with the hershey kisses and spend the money somewhere else.

my MOH made those m&ms for my bridal shower and we gave our ferrer rochers 5 to a little bag tied in ribbons in our colors, they had a sentimental meaning: they are mr winter’s fave so everytime i would come to TN to see him or he would come to NY to see me i would have some for him.

If you can find the foil wrapped mini hershey’s candy bars you can make your own favors out of those, print your info on paper in your colors and replace the wrappers. You still get chocolate and personalization!

Then again, for $500 you can give everyone a full sized candy bar for less than the m&ms. It is kinda hard to find the mini’s with the foil wrap these days too.

buy m & ms in bulk and try to scoop as many green as possible into your bag. try to work the pink element in some other way. m & ms are surprisingly heavy.

i think they sell the kisses stickers at craft stores. you can buy bags of the kisses anywhere and DIY the labels.

We faced the SAME dilemma when it came to the candy bar! We wanted (well, I really, really wanted) a candy bar that was color coordinated and beautiful, but (funny how my fiance is the “voice of reason” too) my fiance told me it’s going to end up costing way more than we think.

I didn’t know personalized M&Ms were so expensive! I don’t know what to tell you (we’ve ultimately decided on homemade jam), but I wouldn’t splurge for anything you don’t really want! Maybe you can get the M&Ms, but not with your picture!

You’re smart to take some time to make this decision, but if you really want it, you only get married once :)

It IS a super cute idea, but I’ve been told that the font/pics are often blurry or unrecognizable. It would be so sad to spend that chunk of money for sub-par results. Good luck on your decision!

You really might want to check into having a preofessional candy buffet. Your cost on the M&M’s is about the same as what my company would charge. And our cost includes everything needed for the buffet including the guest treat containers - an added expense to the cost of the candy for you. And professionals can order candy at wholesale costs and have connections within the industry to make your vision a reality.

Best of luck!
