Mrs. Ribbons, Washington D.C./Bloomington, IN Age and Occupation: 23, Research Associate for an international development firm Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Proposal Coordinator for contractor Engagement Date: May 2, 2008 Wedding Date: June 2010 Venue: Indiana Memorial Union About Me: I'm an Indiana transplant living in DC with my fiance and our pretty kitty. I enjoy the color pink, I'm obsessed with the Dior New Look and tulle, and I heart my level 80 paladin. I'm a sucker for bad TV, literary theory, and cakes of all persuasion. I also happen to be marrying the cutest closet nerd around! It's all about Bloomington for us because it's where we met -- on the college paper. If there's a theme for our small summertime wedding, it's Dior meets Dorothy Draper on a lark in Bloomington; think poofy, plus graphic prints, bold colors, and a whole lot of prettiness.
About Mrs. Ribbons

Ra-Ra-Shish-Koom-Ba

May 31st, 2010 @ 3:05 pm by Mrs. Ribbons

School spirit, yes we do, or something along those lines.

Ribs and I are both IU grads. Since we’re getting married on campus, it feels prudent—nay, necessary—to tip our proverbial hats to our alma mater. I just don’t know when or how!

There are three school songs: two fight songs and “Hail to Old IU,” the song that makes me cry my eyes out for the glory days of Mother Bears pizza and Ballantine Hall.

My original idea was to have a mini pep rally at some point after the ceremony, since many of the guests are IU grads too. My problem, of course, is timing. Is this best suited for cocktail hour (we’ll be able to make the second half of it) or some point during the reception? Should the DJ play a recording or should I conspire with the IU grads to burst out with an a cappella version? Opinions are requested on when and how!

I went to a wedding once where the bride was a South Carolina grad and the groom was a Clemson grad. They played both of their fight songs at the reception (people had been dancing a while) and had a very excited group. Their favors were little water bottles from their respective schools.

Might be a fun idea if you are doing an outdoor cocktail hour to find a local high school marching band to come stomping through playing the song.

Hey Ribbons, we’re both IU grads too!!! We actually walking into our reception to the IU fight song. All of our siblings also went to IU and as did majority of my friends. Love this idea :)

hmmm, maybe you can have it during the cake cutting?

as a big ten almuna, i think you should totally find a way to incorporate it!

i strongly suggest scrapping this idea and going with a round of Hail, Purdue! instead ;-)

I’m with beth1125 :) Congratulations, even if you are IU grads :)

Yup, gonna agree with beth1125 there too…
But if you must play an IU song instead of Purdue :) I thought Amanda’s idea of a marching band would be really neat. Or there’s always a lull in the dancing about midway through a reception - that would be a really great time to play it - it’ll get everyone up and ready to go again.

Maybe you could enter the reception to it? Unless you aren’t doing a formal “entrance” since you will be at the last 1/2 of the cocktail hour. Or I would suggest playing it later in the night, once everyone has a few drinks in them and would really get into it!

We’re going to an IU wedding (”The story continues where it all began”) in August- same place as yours! I would really like it to be done during the reception when people can really get into it. Maybe he could say at first “this one is for all the IU alums!” or something?

I wish we could get a marching band! We’re two weeks away though :) But I like the idea of waiting till everyone’s revved up during the reception

I would vote for doing it a bit later in the reception, when people have had an adult beverage or two…Shouldn’t be too hard to rally some school spirit then, sounds like fun!

the wedding i worked at on saturday was heavy on clemson alumni (including the bride and groom) and the best man started their big c-l-e-m-s-o-n cheer right before the bride and groom started to walk through the arch of sparklers to the car. it was a great time to do it and very cute!

sorry, I’m going to chime in with Beth1125 :) Hail Purdue would def- get the party started… hummmm must work this into our wedding… but since you went to the “other” Indiana establishment of higher learning I am thinking conspiring with the other IU grads would work fine. Just give one of them the mic and I am sure the fight song will be off and running. Seriously- all the best and GO BOILERS!

We entered into our reception to our alma mater’s fight song and it was an awesome moment. Our groomsmen said they felt famous! It is a great idea any time you want to play it!

I think during the dancing portion or as you enter/are announced is the best idea :) what fun! Our university has a fight song, but no football team…and no real sports pride, so I always love when college loves get to do something fun like this!

we had the University of Tennessee rocky top song as our bridal entrance and let me tell you…even though we were in NY all those TN fans were singing regardless. I think it would be fine reception or anytime. ps. my brother will be a MBA IU grad next may!
