About Mrs. Sewing

The Official Officiant

June 1st, 2010 @ 6:12 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Months back, we found out that our California pastor-friend was not legally allowed to perform marriages in Hawaii.

Well, after a few letters of recommendations and some official filing business done right before the due date of two-and-a-half months prior, he is now allowed to perform one marriage on one specific day in Hawaii. And I sure hope it’s ours. (Kidding!) I’ll have to figure out a good thank-you gift to give him and his family for going through all this legal tape on our behalf!

With that major victory finally won (yay!), I think it’s best to see what other legal hurdles we’ll have to jump over before the wedding day.

First, we’ll need the Hawaii marriage license application. It’s good only for thirty days, so we’ll have to apply for it when we get to Hawaii in July. Luckily, we picked up one of the forms on our trip in December, so we can at least fill it out beforehand. (Though, I found out that the same form is also available online.)

The Official Officiant : wedding honolulu officiant Dsc 154

“You want me to change my name to what?!”

Actually, there isn’t anything about name changes on the form. But there is something else that interested me:

The Official Officiant : wedding honolulu officiant Dsc0293

Free newspaper announcement? Yes, please! Unfortunately, we don’t get to pick out what it will say, but I still think it’s pretty cool.

Anyway, once we present the filled out form, IDs and sixty dollars, we’ll be all set. We then get married, have our official officiant sign us off, and await a sparkly new license that should appear in our mailbox back home in California. I hope it’s truly as easy as it seems.

I’ve heard that you may need several copies of your marriage certificate after the wedding, especially if you plan on a name change. Though the first certificate is free, I’ll have to pay ten dollars for an extra one, and four dollars for each additional copy after that.

I will be adopting Mr. Sew’s last name after the wedding, though I have no lofty reasoning or good story as to why. I simply like his last name a whole lot, and that’s all. As he had no strong opinions one way or the other either, it looks like we’re skipping out on the whole name-change-debate. All he asked me was whether it would be confusing at all, since I call him by part of his last name (pronounced like “sock”). I don’t think it should be a problem though.

This, I think, is a more common confusing situation:

Me: Where’s my sock at?!

Mr. Sew: What? I’m right here!

So, how many marriage certificates does one person need? And how many hoops does your state/country/etc. require of you?

Certainly cheaper than Los Angeles County. We just paid $85 for our licence, which was the Confidential Variety. A public license was $90. That doesn’t count the $14 for each marriage certificate. Plus, in order to not wait in hideous lines to get said marriage certificate, you need to get a form notarized and mail it in with your money. Let’s hope I don’t need a ton of actual certificates to get my name changed everywhere.

I just changed my name and only needed one marriage certificate–I took the official copy to the Social Security office and DMV in the same day (or two), sent photocopies to the banks, and then sent the original off for my new passport (and the original should come back with the passport). The photocopy is good enough for most purposes. :)

So far we have only really needed one, I got a certified one too just in case, which I sent to the passport office and got back. I have used about 5 photocopies for credit cards and student loans.

The paperwork and legal part of marriage in a different state can get tricky. Good for you for figuring it all out. I seriously hope Mr. HW and I don’t overlook something.

I’m somewhat in the dark about logistics. I should probably get in-the-know.

Oh boy, thanks for this post. We’re want to get one of our friends ordained to perform our wedding and licensed in Hawaii as well. I didn’t know there was a due date of two and a half months prior. Good thing we still have a year!

I didn’t need any extra marriage certificates. I just had the one that was mailed to me after the wedding and that was good for changing everything. Everyone always just made copies of it. I didn’t encounter any office that needed an original copy. Usually just seeing the original was good enough for them, then they would make a copy of it.

How to get married in Japan:
-Go down to your local ward office and submit a document with all your info and the hanko (stamp) of two witnesses. If you are a foreigner, show your passport to prove you are who you say you are.
-Wait 45 minutes.
-Have your number called and get told you made several mistakes. Don’t you know it’s THIS ridiculous 10 stroke kanji, not this one….
-Correct mistakes.
-The bored and overworked office worker tells you congratulations, it’s done.
-Walk out… Oh, wait, we don’t have any documentation…
-”Two marriage certificates please. One pretty one and one ugly one.”
-Wait another 45 minutes.
-Marriage certificates GET!

Blarg, I need to go down to the US embassy and have the ugly one translated and notarized. I’m changing my name too!

We are still figuring this out.

There is a 3 day waiting period in Michigan…ugh! So our choices are fly in early (not going to happen- not enough vacation time) or have a symbolic ceremony and make it legal back in Arizona later on.

Decisions, decisions…

My husband and I paid 25 or 30 bucks for ours! They gave us a cut rate for having couseling beforehand! (We had to show proof) It was going to be 95 bucks without the couseling!

Our marriage certificate WASN’T mailed to us. According to TN, it WOULD be mailed to us……I waited a MONTH for it to show up via mail carriar and never did, so I called the Clerk’s office only to find out……..IT WAS NEVER MAILED! According to the Clerk’s office, we were suppose to call and tell them we wanted it mailed…..or we could pick it up in person. We just went and picked it up…easy!

@hitchedinhawaii: yeah, definitely call their department of public health, they’ll tell you everything you need to do!
@go4me77: eep! that’s a good thing to take note of. At least you could go pick it up though..if they don’t mail mine, it’ll be really hard for me to get it! XD
@BrianneG: whoa, that sounds complicated!

I haven’t even begun looking up information for a marriage license, but via Mrs. Fro Yo, Texas requires a 3 day lapse from obtaining the license to conducting a ceremony.

I found it surprisingly simple to get the license here in Orange County - and it was $30 cheaper than someone posted the cost for LA county! Glad I’m getting married here (I’m from LA and was considering having the wedding there). We just filled out the form online, made an appointment just in case, and went in only to find 1 other person in line ahead of us. The lady seemed VERY perturbed that I did not plan on immediately changing my name (there was a spot to list it on there), though I may later on. We were only in there about 5 minutes. Also, we don’t get a copy of the certificate afterwards unless we specifically request one, so it’s interesting to see that most, if not all, other posters got theirs by default. Oh and ours are I think $16 each time, bleh.

FYI………Hawaii can take 2-3 months to mail your certificate. Our officianct suggested we fill out the green form (you’ll get one when you go to apply for the license) and send a money order to get it faster. It’s been 4 weeks and we haven’t received anything and I find myself not really interested in spending more money for a sheet of paper. I figure it will happen eventually. :) So if you are eager to do the name change then definitely send in that form! If I remember correctly you even have the option to take care of it when you are there getting the license.

@kyks17 - I work in Orange County and all my co-workers that are recently married were bragging about how easy it was to get their marriage license when they heard about our wait time. Unfortunately, the confidential license must be obtained in the county you’re getting married in and that’s what the FI wanted.
