My hobbies include sleeping in, seasonal brews, running, Trader Joe’s, and watching Unwrapped and Good Eats with Mr. Potato Chips. I harbor an irrational fear of tulle, crafts, things that are fussy, and overuse of the phrase "Your Special Day". About Ms Potato Chips

Making Suze Orman Proud

June 1st, 2010 @ 11:07 am by Ms Potato Chips

I am pretty darn frugal and am proud to say we’ve saved beaucoup bucks by being able to bring in our own alcohol. I am talking half the price of what the caterer would have charged! Here’s what we did:

  1. Our kind caterer sent a list of the packages they offered, so we had a starting point of what to buy.
  2. We used drink calculators from Evite, Party Source, and Perfect Party Planning to estimate amounts. (Note: our caterer is supplying insured bartenders and the mixers/garnishes.)
  3. Mr. Potato Head and I visited the websites of the (tax-free!) New Hampshire state liquor stores we planned on buying from to gauge prices.
  4. I compared prices at my local liquor stores here in Tax-a-chusetts. New Hampshire won.
  5. I wanted $3 Trader Joe’s wine, but my wine-savvy Dad put his foot down and suggested some decent table wine brands instead.
  6. Armed with a meticulous spreadsheet with amounts, prices, and name brands that Mr. Potato Head drafted, SistahChips and I headed forty-five minutes up the road to the Granite State.
  7. Hilarity ensued.

We stood flummoxed in front of the wines for about ten minutes until a nice old man (who didn’t even work there) took us under his wing and suggested what to buy.

Just a quiet evening in with a couple bottles of wine!

Since our cart was full of wine bottles, we paid for them and put them in my car to make room for the hard alcohol. I wrote down everything we bought and hilariously attempted to add it up before paying. Despite using a calculator, I was $100 over the actual retail price.

Time for the Showcase Showdown. We will have 120 adult guests and will be serving alcohol for 4.5 hours.

Wine:

  • 10 750 ml. bottles Cabernet (Mondavi Private Selection and Woodbridge)
  • 10 750 ml. bottles Pinot Noir (Mondavi and Blackstone)
  • 10 750 ml. bottles Chardonnay (Kendall Jackson and Clos du Bois)
  • 10 750 ml. bottles Pinot Grigio (Beringer and Mirassou)
  • 2 750 ml. bottles rose (La Vieille and Jaboulet)

Total: $386.39

Liquor:

  • 3 1.75 liter Jose Cuervo tequila (for Groom’s Choice signature drink: margarita)
  • 5 750 ml. bottles Pimm’s No. 1 (for Bride’s Choice signature drink: Pimm’s Cup)
  • 2 1.75L . Skyy Vodka
  • 1 750 ml. Three Olives Vanilla Vodka
  • 1 750 ml. Three Olives Berry Vodka
  • 1 1.75L Bailey’s Irish Cream
  • 1 1.75L Bombay Sapphire Gin
  • 1 1.75L Dewars White Label
  • 1 1.75L Bacardi rum
  • 1 1.75 Captain Morgan rum
  • 1 1.75L Seagrams
  • 1 1.75L Kahlua
  • 1 375ml. Grand Marnier

Total: $424.80

Not bad!

We plan on picking up a few bottles of champagne (we are not doing a champagne toast, but it’ll be nice to have on-hand). I’d also like to get a couple extra bottles of Pimm’s, just in case. We wiped the store out of their Pimm’s supply.

The beer we will pick up in Rhode Island so it doesn’t go skunk in this rapidly-fluctuating New England hot and cold spring we’re having. We plan on offering four kinds:

  • Corona
  • Sam Adams
  • homebrew
  • Narragansett Ale (cheap, light, and local!)

Providing our own booze took some time and effort, but we’ll end up saving over $2000! Totally worth the leg-work, even for this lazy bride.

Are you providing your own alcohol for your wedding? How did you decide how much you’d need?

I had no idea they had drink calculators! I will be using one for sure. We are lucky enough to be providing our own alcohol as well, but alas no longer live near NH so we probably won’t do nearly as well!

Must not be as savvy as your dad

Weddingbee is a great, positive site that allows brides from all walks of life to communicate, inspire, and lend ideas and positive communication up until (and after) their wedding day. This is the first post that has ever offended me.

Congratulations on your frugality, but I found the following quote rude:
“I wanted $3 Trader Joe’s wine, but my wine-savvy Dad put his foot down and suggested some decent table wine brands instead.”

As a bride who server Trader Joes wine at my own wedding, I am appalled to see your remark. I’m sure your dad has his opinions, but you shouldn’t make others feel bad because of a choice of wine. You go on to say you served decent table wine instead. How rude! I used to enjoy reading your posts. In the future, I will skip over them.

Regarding your title, Suze Orman wouldn’t be proud of you after all, as I have never heard her say anything snooty or snobby while giving financial advice.

@Must not be as savvy as your dad: I love Trader Joe’s wine. My dad’s kind of a wine snob. I can’t really tell the difference. Sorry to offend!

So you can get Pimms in NH?! I’m on the North Shore of MA and haven’t been able to find it anywhere local and have been buying it in my travels (including on a cruise ship in the Caribbean) but now knowing that it will only take me a 1/2 hour to pick some up - I’m totally psyched! Thanks for the tip!

I love PIMMS!

@Miss Bumble: YES! I’ve found it in two different NH state liquor stores! Pimms is the best!

We were given the option too, so we’re bringing our own liquor (just enough for our two cocktails) and wine (with a cork fee). They’re providing our beer (and their price works out to be just about what it would be if we added their cork fee to our own) and mixers.

I’m also awesome at math, even with a calculator.

Yay for buying your own alcohol….and saving beaucoup bucks!!

Heee! I know that NH state liquor store well… I vacation in NH most years, and we always hit that one right over the line off of 95. Looks like good choices on the wine!

I have no insight as to how much liquor to buy or “good wine” since I buy according to the prettiness of the labels, but your post made me laugh :) Every summer as we begin our weekend treks from “Tax-a-chusetts” to my grandparent’s cottage in NH, the NH State Liquor store shines like a beacon on the side of 93 - pit-stop, candy vending machine and liquor superstore all in one! I once took a group of New Yorkers here and they thought they died and went to heaven lol.

We did the same thing! FYI, you can return the unopened bottles for a refund if you don’t use them. The Mondavi Pinot Noir was our red at our wedding - it’s one of my favorites :)

We are buying our own beer and wine (no liquor at our venue) and the FI and I totally plan on hitting up TJ’s for some wine!

Thanks for the post! It’s very helpful, we are providing our own alcohol as well. I work on a Military instalation so we already get the alcohol tax free.

BEER:
We will be supplying 4 type of beer (Miller Light, Bud Light, Corona, and a dark beer).

WINE:
Then we will be serving two wines - Oliver (local winery in Indiana) Soft Red Wine (2 Cases) and their white wine (1 Case). One of our friends is a Wine Distributor so we are getting a case of wine for $45, typically the wine goes for 7.99 at local liquor stores.

COCKTAILS:
My finance and I play volleyball all year long… so he came up with a great name idea, “Bump, Set, Spike”. We will be having 3 signature cocktails:
“Bump” = Honey Lemonde made with Vodka, crystal light lemonade, honey, and lemon slices // for those watching their calories but still want to have something to drink.
“Set” = Pomagrante-Grape juice with Vodka (this one may change, need to use rum or whiskey in a drink)
“Spike” = Margarita

We bought 6 drink dispensers that hold 3 gallons, they are clear so we are using colors that will be in the wedding in the drinks (fall wedding) We will have the signature cocktails displayed in these with a recipe card on them so people know what they are drinking. The other 3 dispensers will be used for the non-alcoholic - lemonde, sweet ice tea, unsweet ice tea.

I really wish we could buy our own booze too but my venue has a strict policy that we have to go through their liquor distributor. Boo! Way to go for saving mucho bucks on this though!

I love your posts (and was totally not at all offended by the Trader Joe’s wine judgment). What would be super-mega-ultra-helpful would be if you could do a similar post after your wedding, detailing how much booze your guests actually drank. Our friends are pretty heavy drinkers, but this past summer, another couple in our group of friends were able to supply their own liquor at their wedding. They ended up having ELEVEN bottles of vodka left over. I’m trying to avoid a similar situation, but I *definitely* don’t want to run out!

We’re providing our alcohol too, but have no idea how much to purchase even with the calculators. I hope to do as well as you did in purchases though!

We aren’t allowed to provide our own alcohol, but we’re budget conscious so we’re buying two kegs of beer through them and bringing in cheap-o Walmart wine with a $10/bottle corkage fee. If people want liquor, they’ll have to pay for it.

I studied abroad in London one summer and am so in love with Pimms. I haven’t even thought to go searching for it here in the states…but some Pimm’s lemonade out on the lake sounds like a FANTASTIC idea!
