My Plan Backfired

June 1st, 2010 @ 3:36 pm by Mrs. Trail Mix

Remember how I was all into running and stuff, and even managing to complete a little race called the Boston Marathon? I thought it would be the perfect way to get in shape and look dynamite for the wedding. And yes, training for the marathon buffed up my bod like no other workout will.

And that’s the problem, folks. Now that it’s been more than a month since the marathon, I just can’t find the willpower to work out much. But I’m still downing pints of Ben and Jerry’s like I’ve run 10 miles that day. Anyone else see what’s wrong with that equation?

So yes, sadly, I’ve actually gained a bit since the marathon, completely derailing my plan of getting in shape and then maintaining that physique from race day to wedding day. It’s hard to force yourself to go for a run when there’s a lovely, cold glass of white wine and a hunk of brie waiting for you out on the patio when you get home from work (the bonus of having an unemployed fiance!).

Oh well, it’s not really a big deal, although I am a little bit disappointed because, like most of us, I am hoping to present the best version of myself at the wedding but it just might not be in the cards. It’s more annoying than anything else. I guess I’ll just have to bank on the week before the wedding, since I have heard that brides-to-be tend to lose weight that week with everything going on. Fingers crossed!

Is anyone else find that the warm weather makes ice cream and white wine too appealing to turn down? What have you done to get in shape for your wedding?

get in shape? nah, that would require me to exercise. Eat the brie, drink the wine, and have yourself a good time.

Wow… I am by no means “in shape” …i am a shape though…ROUND lol… all laughing matter aside, I thought that with the wedding coming up I would be extremly motivated to loose the 20lbs ive been lugging around but i have no urge to get up and do antyhing.
My lack of motivation has me fearing my wedding dress and wedding photos.
I do not want to look back and think…” why couldnt i just have been careful for a few months…WHY?”

I hope people have suggestions ….

First, you’re thin and fit anyway, so any weight gain you notice will only be what YOU notice. And you’ll look gorgeous at your country chic wedding (which I cannot wait to see)! Second, it’s absolutely true, a week before the wedding you’ll forget to eat or will be running around so much you’ll drop a bunch of weight! It’s weird! You’ll be gorg no matter what!

TM, you look amazing!! And, even if you aren’t in complete marathon shape for the day of the wedding, you will still look beautiful. Don’t be hard on yourself!!

I’ve decided my dress fits so why mess with that :) I’ve been making a half-hearted attempt to work on my arms, but other than that, ben & jerrys is delicious and it is what it is.

I’ve heard of other people I know training to run marathons, then finally completing them and not running for months afterwards. So you’re definitely not alone there.

Huge props, though, for completing it! Seriously, that’s awesome. Next to that level of accomplishment, what’s a few ice creams and taking some time to be with your fiance. As others have said, I’m sure you’ll look fantastic and no one but you will even notice.

I did the SAME thing. I ran a half in Jan and I was in awesome shape. Then I was like, I’ll train for another half at Easter and I’ll stay in shape. The last month or so I’m like no. freakin. way. I had all these delusions of being like a size 4 for my wedding and it’s not happening. But my dress looks good, my bikinis fit, and that’s all I have to worry about at this point :o)

I love this post because I feel like almost every bride has been there. And believe me, especially with this weather, you’re right - the ice cream is hard to turn down (especially if it’s Ben and Jerry’s!). Honestly, I think there are a few things to consider here…. while every bride wants to look their “best” on their wedding day, why not just look like you? Funny story…

It’s been two years since my wedding and, while popping in the DVD I used to get in shape for it the other night I commented that this was the first time I’ve used it since our wedding. This brought my husband and I to laughing so hard we were almost crying. Here was this video I obsessed over before our wedding day, but in the real world… I haven’t used it once. Sure, being a little more tone the day of might sound good, but if it’s not who you usually are then what’s the point? :)

Major kudos on the marathon, however. That’s a serious accomplishment! And as Mrs. Frozen Yogurt said, you will still be beautiful the day of!

Seriously, don’t sweat it! You look wonderful and will look beautiful on your wedding day. I am a small person but definitely wasn’t at my thinnest on our wedding day…AND I didn’t lose any weight the week of like some people say you do…so don’t plan on it and don’t worry about it. Besides, if you lose weight the week of, your dress won’t fit…I just tried to keep things status quo. Enjoy the wine and the brie and your wedding day!

I totally understand about the wine and brie! Why run when you can get tipsy with FI and eat wonderful cheese?

I went from not working out at all to running 2-3 times a week. It’s actually made a noticable difference although I am still the same size. FI has noticed my legs are slimmer, stomach tighter and I’ve lost a couple lbs.

It’s nothing 1 order of hotwings from Blondie’s can’t derail though!!

o.m.g. yes. last year I completely changed my eating habits and have been so happy with the way I eat and maintaining the 37 pounds I’d lost - but since getting to crunch time, I’ve gained back 10! and last night’s bottle of tequila and bag of chips (which I don’t eat, ever)…yeah i’m terrified to get on the scale.

I’m trying so hard to keep up with walking 10,000 or more steps though (LOVE my pedometer!)

haha, you just described the 6 months after my marathon :).
holy cow - I seriously gained 10 lbs after the marathon. I’m 5′2″! I can still get out and run 6 miles for fun if I want, but I’m definitely more squishy. Sad.
Now you see why we ran the marathon so close to the wedding date :-p

Push-ups! I lost 8 pounds for my wedding and then just stopped working out, except for push-ups. I figure my arms were going to be the only naked part of my body that day, so why worry about the rest?

Oh also… that thing about losing weight before the wedding is TOTALLY true. I ate horribly, but because I never ate that much and was in constant motion, I probably dropped another 2 pounds.

Plus you’re already hawt! Don’t sweat it.

You look awesome but I totally understand wanting what you want. I love how you put it…to be the best version of yourself.

I am the brie and wine girl all the way, so I feel your pain. My fiance completed his first marathon in April and gained like 10 lbs afterward. Of course in the guy world, that’s nothing, but I think your lack of motivation after accomplishing such a huge goal is common. Just think of your new goal!
