Last Minute Creativity

June 2nd, 2010 @ 2:25 pm by Mrs. Seashell

A long, long time ago our Save the Dates went out to our guests. Soon after, Mama Seashell got a flood of phone calls and word from friends and family that they’d received our magnets in the mail. (And of course, heard that everyone was so excited for the Seashell wedding.) After a few weeks we also deduced that a few people hadn’t received their Save the Dates. Oh no!

First, don’t even get me started on my anxiety about our actual invitations getting lost in the mail. Those suckers aren’t going to be cheap! Second, where had they gone? That whole “lost in the mail” idea wasn’t making me too happy. And third, what to do?

Fortunately I had extra gold envelopes and magnets. I figured I could Sharpie on (in pretty letters of course) the addresses and throw them in the mail. However, the sheen of the envelopes made for a poor result. I searched my desk.

What do we have here? Cute little circle labels that have nothing to do with our color scheme? Ah, heck these people are technically getting their second Save the Date. Beggars can’t be choosers.

And matching return address labels that I’d already had from a previous project? Not too shabby!

The final result:

It’s no wrap around label with perfectly matching custom stamp, but for a last minute “make these things look half decent” project I think I did alright!

Did you have any unanticipated DIY projects? Do things “getting lost in the mail” hopelessly freak you out too?

@yelhsa439: I had my wrap around labels made, but here’s a link to a template. Good luck! http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/good-thing/ready-and-labeled

I’ve had a HORRIBLE run in with mis-deliverings via the USPS a few months back. Gives me the chills to think these very important invitations will be at their mercy again, but I digress.

Ugh I had about 5 save the dates get “lost in the mail.” I made them all myself and they took probably 20-30 hours total to put together (very detailed an tedious). I haven’t had time to make the five and resend yet because we have been so busy!

I love the circle labels. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with our response card envelopes and I might go with circle labels since printing on the envelopes themselves is proving problematic.

How did you deduce that people hadn’t received the STDs, though? Did you ask after not hearing back from them? I wouldn’t have thought I needed to respond in any way to an STD since it’s basically just a heads up to mark my calendar, so I wouldn’t have considered silence an indication that someone hadn’t gotten it.

great idea!! I wonder if any more of ours got lost…we were only told by one person that they didn’t get it.

We’ve had two people say our RSVPs were lost in the mail, but all of our invites arrived safely at their destination, thankfully. I love the circular labels. Your sharpie handwriting is adorable!

@Jennifer: The missing Save the Dates were discovered through word of mouth. Mainly, Mama Seashell casually asked people if they’d received theirs and a few hadn’t. I hate to think about it, but there may have been a few others that didn’t make it!

I like those circle labels a lot! And just so you know, we just send out our STDs and I’ve been freaking out that maybe some people didn’t get theirs!!! I’ll have to have my mom do some investigating so I can do this too!

USPS = number one enemy. They have lost so many crucial pieces of my mail over the years that the thought of mailing wedding invites makes me cringe. :(

I just received a bridal shower invite that had 1/4 ripped off and a bright orange USPS sticker that says “Please accept our apologies. This item was damaged during processing.” Eek!

You put me to shame. I found out someone had not received their STD (seriously, WTF?! That happens?! I wanted her to know she was invited, plus I put work into that thing) but it didn’t occur to me to construct a new one for her when I found out. I had achieved closure with the STDs; I relied on verbal communication, and the fact that I already knew she was coordinating with friends to fly out here, to get it on her calendar.

I’ve never had a single thing lost in the mail. Where do you live? I wonder where the hangup is? Local Post Office.. or during transit? Or destination Post Office.. - gosh another thing to fret over :) Good thinking with the extras though!

[...] wish I had cute handwriting a la Mrs. Seashell. Everyone I talked to spoke about how easy it was just to buy a calligraphy pen and go to town. [...]
