Garter Shenanigans

June 2nd, 2010 @ 1:39 pm by Mrs. Scissors

I recently ordered my garter, and I can’t wait for it to come in so that I can ogle it. If you remember, I was set on doing a garter toss, and found some beautiful garters that didn’t make me gag. In the end, I chose none of those garters that I drooled over, but a different (set!) entirely.

Mr. Scissors, if you’re reading now, which I doubt you are, stop. You’ll get to see this soon enough!

The garter I chose was one by Julianne Smith, aka The Garter Girl. Why this and not the others? Wellllll, I had some reasons…

  1. It’s a garter set. I was set on having a set because I wanted to have both a tossing and a keeping garter. I didn’t want to invest all of this money just to have my pretty wedding garter taken by a clueless bachelor. (Sorry, guys.) None of the garters I’d considered previously were a part of a set.
  2. It’s just so pretty, sweet, and simple. My dress has so much shazam going on that I was ready for some minimal accessories.
  3. They also look more durable. I know that this sounds stupid, but I’m going to be wearing this on my thigh, and while I imagine I’ll only don it for pictures and for the toss, I don’t want to have to walk like a monkey so I don’t crush the poor thing with dress and legs. Grosgrain ribbon? Sturdy McPractical.
  4. Julianne is awesome, and her blog was one of the first that I started reading when I stumbled into wedding land.

Hooray. One great thing about having a garter set, which I learned at our meeting with our awesome DJ, Mike Zarin, last week, is that it sets you up for some pretty awesome shenanigans.

SO! There is a bouquet toss and a garter toss, or at least in our wedding-reception-plan. (I also have a tossing bouquet. I’m not so good at sharing.) If it’s appropriate, i.e. not a crazy age difference or some strange situation, the dude that catches the garter puts said garter on the bouquet-catcher.

While some brides may be horrified by this, I think we have many many many hilarious/awesome possible situations with this. After the catching happens, we’ll give Mike the thumbs up or down as to whether or not to call forth this “tradition”. I’m hoping we get the ‘nads to do this. I am a fan.

What factors played into your garter choice? Are you doing a toss? Anybody else heard of this add-on tradition?

I bought a Cinncinati Bengals garter because my FI LOVES that team (I am a Pats fan, but around here NO ONE would touch that garter if it got thrown). I got a keepsake and a toss so during football season I can wear the garter over my pants for shenanigans sake.

We are doing the toss, but I think I am just going to attach gift cards to the garter/bouquet and just invite anyone that wants to participate to do so.

I think the “putting on the garter” tradition is fun too - here’s a question though - who keeps the garter? The guy who caught it or the girl he puts it on?

Which garter do you keep? I’m assuming it’s the pretty one? That’s the way I’m doing it. FH can throw away the non-awefsome one, I’m keeping the blingy one!

I love the idea of tossing one and keeping one! (Although after the weekend marathon of “hoarders” I’m being weird about throwing things out. Damn TV.)

@farmersdaughter: No idea. I’ll let them handle that. :p
@Goldilocks1107: The pretty floofy one, of course! I expect Mr. S will put the pretty one around his head so that he will look like one of those babies with headbands on.(He knows that scares the crap out of me.)
@Mrs. Pug: Do it. Anniversary naughty time?

Simple and pretty - I like!!! We’re doing both tosses, but didn’t think about the potential age gap!

I bought three chicago cubs garters - and they’re all different in one way or another. Mine the garter is white with blue ribbon - my MOH is blue with white ribbon and a white feather. My bridesmaids is blue with white ribbon.
we’re HUGE chicago cubs fans and our cake topper, grooms cake (rehearsal dinner) and his cufflinks I bought are also chicago cubs. :)
I’m NOT doing the toss - but have a pic from high school prom where we showed off our garters and want that pic! lol

Oooh, pretty. No garter toss for us but I remain convinceable on the matter of just wearing a garter for the hell of it.

beautiful garter…. I have seen the garter toss done with that flare… at my cousins wedding the bouquet catcher sat down to get the garter put on and her b/f now fiance got up and stopped the whole thing and took the garter away … needless to say we laughed so hard and 2 months later they were engaged! He wasn’t allowing any guy to touch his lady… LOL
