Mrs. Thimble's Picture
Mrs. Thimble, NYC/Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Actress & Costume Designer (+ day job) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lawyer & Techie Wiz Engagement Date: August 22, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: The Pearl S. Buck House About Me: I’m an easily inspired over-thinker delighted with the process of designing, building, directing and {dare I say} co-starring in the early-autumn affair I’ve been dreaming up. I’m a sucker for trendied-up comfort foods and old family anecdotes; I have an affinity for adjectives, alliteration, eyelet and earl grey; and I live for quality time with family and friends. I never guessed I’d marry my “high school sweetheart", but when it turned out to be my funny, techie, loyal Mr. Thimble I was committed for life. We’re both mid-career transition and ready to move back to small-townish TBD, PA in a pre-wedding flurry of all-good life changes.
About Mrs. Thimble

Thanks for sticking with me through my last, possibly tedious venue post. Now it’s time to reveal our pick and the why behind it (besides it’s obvious beauty).

The Pearl S. Buck Estate in Perkasie, Pennsylvania

This was the first venue we visited, both families in tow, and I had not anticipated falling for it as hard as I did. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and BIG. There’s no traffic in sight which was a concern for some of the other venues I visited or just drove by in Bucks County. It’s closer to home and more me than the Center City venues.

We arrived about 15 or 20 minutes before our families did, so rather than walk into the tent for the Open Aire Affairs open house and then awkwardly walk back through again with our parents’ 20 extra questions, we enjoyed the grounds. We opened doors we perhaps shouldn’t have and found a front desk in the visitor’s center with some brochures on Pearl S. Buck International.

There are times in my life when I realize that I just don’t open my eyes and ears to something way cool that was right in front of my face. I think I had always heard of the PSB House, but I had never visited or asked what it was. And I had never put together that it’s related to (really the reason for) PSBI. And I had also never really thought about what it is that PSBI does. Suddenly this ho-hum typical suburban old estate wedding venue was the home of tons of history about this incredible woman who has inspired this incredible organization to aide in the adoptions of children from China, Costa Rica, Kazakhstan, Korea, Nepal, the Philippines and Vietnam. They also offer sponsorship programs that assist disabled, orphaned, displaced, and minority children and their families internationally.

Yeahokay so this venue costs how much? Set that against the similarly priced othervenues, subtract out the half that goes to Open Aire Affairs, and that’s a hefty hunk of wedding money that will be working double duty providing us with a great place for a wedding and helping support the upkeep of the PSBHouse… freeing up more money to help the families and the babies! Score for them, and score for eco-chic wedding.

Besides this fantastic revelation that our money will work overtime, PSBI’s work also opened up a discussion for Mr. Thimble and I about the possibility of adoption for our own future family. Both of our extended families have benefited from adoption, and we would love to be able to help a child (or 2) who needs us and welcome them into our household as our own. It’s certainly nothing we’ve decided on yet, but it’s on the table.

Sitting on a bench in the warm late-summer early-evening sun, talking about a heftily grown-up topic, and reconfirming that our values are similar and that we want to be helpful and meaningful to humanity throughout our lives together is a sure-fire way to make that spot on that bench outside that house meaningful to us. We were looking toward the lives of future Mr. and Miss. Thimble in a way that no other place had done before in quite this way.

Sure I can be a little dramatic. Yes, it would have read as a casual conversation to anyone who had witnessed it. But to me it was dripping in meaning and well-boding for our future happiness.

How did you choose your venue? And have other couples had a surprising, deeper relationship assessment during a (non vows-related) part of your wedding planning?

What a beautiful venue and BEAUTIFUL cause. I feel touched (being of Vietnamese decent). I’m so excited to see how everything comes together for your consciously-eco-chic wedding.

Congratulations on your engagement:) The venue is beautiful.

As an international adoptee, I would just like to advise you to look within our American foster care system for a child who is legally free for adoption, rather than perpetuating the multi billion dollar industry that international adoption has become in recent years. Korea is one country that has come to understand that the solution to poverty and the stigma against single mothers is not to send their children to other countries, but to promote domestic adoptions instead. They are ending international adoption as of 2012.

I wish you and your future hubby the best, and hope you will look beyond the happy things about adoption and learn about some of the really inconvenient truths…:)

@Miss Knitting: Hi Miss Knitting!!!!@Mrs. Pug: thank you! haha, I get nervous- I can be verbose :) @kate169: I agree with you- We certainly haven’t done any research on this yet, nowhere near ready, but we do agree we should look domestically first if we adopt. PSB just inspired us that day (and they work with domestic adoptions as well, just so I don’t publicly overlook that bit). I’m still happy to support them in my little way though.

What a beutiful post. And a gorgeous venue with a wonderful history. Adoption is such a beautiful thing. My grandmother was adopted and I’ve always considered it myself. I love those moments when I’m re-affirmed that the relationship is everything I dreamed of. It fills me with warm fuzzies any time that happens.
