Mrs. Starfish, Boston/Newport Age and Occupation: 25, Operations Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 25, Sales Engagement Date: October 8, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: The Atlantic Beach Club About Me: I'm a perfectionist who is a planner at heart. I don't do well with surprises. I love planning, crafting, Newport RI, family and friends, and most importantly, Mr. Starfish---all of which will be big components in our October wedding in our favorite little city by the sea.
About Mrs. Starfish

This week I realized we have about 4 months to go until our wedding. When we first got engaged 20 months ago we were gung-ho when it came to planning: we booked the venue, the photographer, and the videographer right away. The months following we started booking the florist, the cake baker, the DJ, etc. etc. etc. During the first year of planning we were very productive. Flash forward about a year, add in some life changing events, and all of a sudden we weren’t so involved in the planning.

Other than our tasting, not too much has been planned lately. We originally loved the idea of the long engagement because we figured we’d have so much time to get things done, but on the contrary, because we had so much time to plan, things got pushed off once the “important” things had been planned.

With four months to go, we still need to pick out our invitations and put them together and get them addressed and sent, create programs, table numbers, escort cards, OOT bags, bathroom baskets, flip flop baskets, choose the groom’s and groomsmen’s attire, a veil, find bridal accessories and shoes, schedule alterations, ask family members to do readings, create centerpieces and a guestbook, choose wedding readings, ceremony songs and create the reception playlist, choose wedding party gifts and wedding bands, schedule appointments, etc. etc. etc.

Many of the projects above are going to be DIY, so I have no idea how we’ll find the time, but I’m determined and vow to no longer procrastinate.

I’ll have to give an update in a few months to see how many of these projects get dropped. Did I mention I currently have no computer to do said projects? Yeah, that’s something we should probably put on top of our priority list. Luckily, Sister S has been letting me use hers when needed. Hopefully I’ll be more productive in the coming weeks and will have a lot more to share.

Did you have a long engagement? Did it cause you to relax during planning or procrastinate and stress out towards the end?

Too funny, we’re pretty much in the exact same boat. Engaged for 18 months, did all the same early on wedding related tasks, then 4 months hit, and I thought, man I need to get my butt into gear! So much to do! Apparently the 4 month mark puts it into perspective!

Starfish, I feel like I could have written this post. I’m in the same boat, except with 3 months to go. Things are starting to get crossed off the list …

I totally know how you feel. At four months out we still don’t have a dj or a florist and we are ticked off at our venue so we are in negotiations with a new one… Talk about stress! Luckily, all of the graphic design/paper things are already designed they just have to be put together eeek! Good luck to you! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Oh man, I’m right there with you. We’ve been engaged for almost a full year already with 4 months left to go. I finally made a to-do list yesterday so things don’t start falling through the cracks. I think that’s why I had wedding related nightmares all night long! LOL.

Your post could not have come at a better time for me to read!!! I’m in a similar situation…my wedding is this October and we’ve already been engaged for a year. I started off strong just like you…venue, caterer, photographer, florist, etc…and then the the three month lull hit where I’ve barely done a darn thing and while I’m starting to freak out a little everyone else around me seems to be pretty much over it! I’m ordering invites this week, I didn’t even send out save the dates since I felt like everyone has known when we’re getting married for so long, and not many people are coming from out of town. And nope, I STILL haven’t ordered my shoes. :0

You and I are in the exact same boat (except your engagement is 2 months longer). All of the big stuff (vendor hunting, tastings, etc.) has been very leisurely. Now that we are getting down to the final months all the details need to be taken care of and they are more stressful to deal with than the big stuff. We will get it done though…I hope.

I SO hear you. I literally wrote almost this exact same post on my own blog recently. Good luck getting everything done and if you find any magical tricks to get procrastinating brides off the couch and into action… please do share!

Covering my ears and singing really loud so I can’t hear your to-doooo liiiiiisssttt!!!!!

Well, you know what I mean.

I’m exactly where you are sister. Looong engagement, big stuff done, down to the detail work and DIY, and I’m facing a big move at the end of the month. And here I thought I had my act together. Nope, 4 [months] is a very small number. We can do it [right??] we can do it!!

Yeah… I looked at your list and thought, yes, yes, yes - still have to do that — with less than 3 months to go. But it’s okay since I’m done with grad school for the summer and only have an internship and wedding planning to do!

You can do it!

I’m trying to avoid being in the same boat. I still have 7 months right now, but with moving in the next month, and the holidays right before the wedding, time is getting tight already! yikes!

We only had about a 10 month engagement, but I’ll tell you, as much I prefer to work ahead, it has been remarkable how much Mr. Snow has accomplished in the last month.

A month ago, we were w/o wedding bands, Mr. Snow’s passport, men’s clothes, almost all paper goods (minus invites…barely), readers, plane tickets, etc…. With a week to go, it’s almost all finished.

When you set your mind to it, it’ll all magically get done.
