About Mrs. Pin Cushion

Along with the 713 dresses I tried on at bridal stores, I also explored my ’once worn’ wedding dress options. I visited the site Pre-Owned Wedding Dresses pretty frequently (an excellent source of procrastination [who said that? I NEVER procrastinate!]), emailed a dozen people and visited three ladies’ houses to try on their dresses.

Let me give you a bit of insight. It is odd (to say the least) to visit a stranger’s home and undress down to your skivvies in their bedroom while they help you shimmy on the gown that they wore at their own wedding. Each part of the experience is awkward enough on its own, but add them all together and you get one big smorgasbord of uncomfortablness. Cue awkward laughter from Miss Pin Cushion.

Thankfully all the women I met were exceedingly nice, and didn’t seem to mind me prancing into their house and taking photos of myself dressed in the most expensive clothing item they probably own.

The first dress I tried on was by Cymbeline, style Cherie:

My expression in the photo on the right says it all; I’m pretty sure I’m trying to hold in my laughter. The dress had been so cute in the lady’s photos online, but on me, ’ridiculous’ is really the only way to describe it. The fabric was too shiny. The bottom tier was removable (to assist with boogeying down at the reception), but that only made the look sillier. And there was quite a bit of a fabric pouf in the tush-al region.

Next, was a beautiful dress that I loved online and loved in person almost as much. But the seller was charging nearly the full price. I thought I’d be able to talk her down, but no such luck. (Note to self: add “learn to bargain” to my post-wedding to-do list.)

So many tiers! I still love this one.

Lastly, was a simple Monique Lhullier dress. The woman had bought it at a sample sale and never wore it. I had a moment of thinking it was working for me, but the photos don’t lie-it was not working. The color wasn’t right and it was too simple. Plus, I’m not used to showing that much cleavage.

Head is cut off in the second photo to protect the innocent (you all) from seeing my scary zombie face (though it’s still peeking out).

The thing about trying pre-owned wedding gowns is that even if you know immediately that you don’t want the dress, you’re standing right in front of the owner, so you can’t come right out and say you don’t like it. You have to act like you’re thinking, “Oh yes. So lovely. I think I might just buy this.” Probably all three ladies I met thought I was going to call them back lickety split and buy their dress. But they were wrong.

Who else had awkward moments during dress shopping? Any underwear-gone-array moments out there? Or bad mouthing a dress while the next bride over tried it on?

I just had my first bridal dress experience - my mother, sister and I went to a boutique in Portland OR. I live in Los Angeles, so I thought it would be wonderful to visit my family for the weekend in Portland and try on some dresses (what is more girl-bonding than wedding dress shopping?!). I flew in around 3pm, and we shuttled right to the boutique. I didn’t know the lady would insist on handing me each gown while I was in my skivvies - a red see-through g-string, to be exact. From now on, its full coverage for any shopping days.

ha! I went dress shopping in Portland too! I got mine from the first store I tried, even though I kept shopping after I found it and before I bought mine!

Oh I tried on that second dress at Kleinfelds! It was very pretty and my parents loved it, but I just didn’t think it was “me”. I had my first fitting this week and can’t wear a bra with my dress. I just had to throw it off and go topless with the girl helping me get my dress on. I surprisingly got over it pretty quickly! ;)

I love that second dress! It looks great on you. I can definitely sympathize with the bargaining issue…

That sounds really awkward! I don’t know if I’d be able to handle that!

I am way too shy to have been able to do that! I bow down to your skillz, lady. :) Even though it didn’t work out, you still got a pretty awesome story out of it!

lol glad to know i’m not alone in the whole dress drama thing…i tried on at least 15 dresses *about half of the alfred angelo store* and became such good friends with my sales girl she’s now on my facebook friends lol!

I took my FI shopping twice *we’re non traditional* The 1st dress he loved I think bc it was me in a dress lol but I hated it another dress I loved but he said made me look old which in turn made me cry in the middle of the store…needless to say

I bought a new dress off once wed that I adore without even trying it on! Go figure

@blushing bride: Oh I LOVE that! I wore black and white striped boy shorts once-plenty of coverage but you could see them through the dresses!

@tea: It’s true-I definitely do certain things that I wouldn’t do any other time!

@almostmrsjim: I’ll look through my emails to see if I can find the designer and name of the 2nd dress for you.

that second one is lovely. although i have to say it’s a pet peeve of mine when people expect that you’ll pay more for a used dress than they did for a new dress (by charging at least 50% of the original price)–what gives?

i love the 2nd dress on you as well! i think if you really want the dress, try to bargain with that lady again. no reason why she should be charging full price for it. if that doesn’t work, try calling around stores and see if they have a off-the-rack one that you can buy at a discount. good luck!

I went dress shopping with my mom, sister (MOH), and FMIL. In one of the stores, as the lady was pulling the dress down off of me, my strapless bra went with it and my boob popped out. My FMIL saw everything! No turning back now!

The second dress looks the best on you by far….I’d say take the second dress or keep looking…you have a great figure so you want something that will totally compliment you:) Good Luck!

I bought a pre-owned dress (but not pre-worn, the bride decided it was too heavy for her summer wedding which is definitely true). I took my mom with me though to help with trying it on and for a second opinion. My experience was so nice–the lady put a full length mirror in her spare room and also let me use her veil so I could get the full look! I left with a Maggie dress that I got for about half-retail and a stack of bridal magazines and books.
