Mrs. Guinea Pig's Picture
Mrs. Guinea Pig, Baltimore, MD Age and Occupation: 26, PhD student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Operations Director at a non-profit Engagement Date: December 25, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club About Me: I'm a tomboy science nerd whose girly side has made a startling appearance thanks to wedding planning! I love to bake, knit and sew but I also ride a motorcycle (that Mr. Guinea Pig wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole). We live with our three crazy cats and love to read, travel, watch movies, and do home improvement projects together! My parents/family are Canadian but I'm definitely American, although I've lived in 5 different countries, 6 different states, and speak Russian fluently. Mr. GP and I met online (did I mention I'm a scientist?) and had a whirlwind romance - now we can't wait to get married & celebrate with all our friends and family in a blue and yellow waterfront affair!
About Mrs. Guinea Pig

Similar to Ms. Snow and her solution to having extra fabric, after making the ties for the groomsmen and Mr. GP, as well as the blue sash for my dress, I had a fair bit of our blue and yellow fabrics left over. Because of the odd shapes the tie pattern had cut out of the fabric, I knew it couldn’t really be used for anything that required large sections of fabric, and I decided to make fabric flags with the leftovers! I wanted to use this to decorate the railing that was at the front of our ceremony space, behind our ’altar’ to add a little more splash of color.

If you remember from my programs post, I had an awesome team of women helping me out the last few days before the wedding, and we tackled this project with the same quick intensity as the programs (and this is definitely not the last you’ll see of their help - have I mentioned how deeply indebted I am to them?)!

Friend DB cut out all the flags from the fabric and sewed the foldover section at the top that the rope would eventually go through:

(I’m beginning to wonder if I have a photo of friend DB NOT at the sewing machine?)

Aunt M fray checked the edges of the blue flags:

(The fabric pulled really easily at the edges, so fray check was a must)

And what’s that in the background of the above photo? Aunt B fray checking the yellow flags!

(with only one sewing machine, we didn’t want to tie it up with zigzag stitching the edges, which is why we chose fray check: multiple people could do it at once!)

The rope was bought at a dollar store, and it was laundry line - pretty thick, and 100 feet long. It seemed a little sturdier than we needed when we bought it, but boy-oh-boy did that turn out to be a good thing! I have no photos of the tedious process of threading the flags onto the rope, but here it is all bundled up and ready to head off to the venue:

(The sight of our colors together still makes me smile!)

The original plan was to swag the flags along the railing, but when the venue realized the winds were crazy on Saturday, they had to tie the rope down tight to the top of the banister! Luckily the wind still whipped them around and it was fun to the see the colors flying. :)

And lastly, a photo with the flags in action in the background: me reciting my vows to Mr. Guinea Pig, while trying to stop crying and wiping tears away. Mr. GP is reaching up to hold my hand (I’m such a sap I’m practically tearing up just looking at this photo!).

I was pretty pleased with the result, even if they couldn’t be ’swagged’. They added the perfect touch of color to the front of the ceremony space!

Did you tackle any last minute projects with leftovers? What are you doing to add color to your space?

Go Team Leftover Fabric Banners! Your Bunting looks lovely and gives me hope that mine will not look like a third grader’s birthday party!

So pretty, I totally want these for our wedding but have neither the time nor resources to pull it off, so I’m just living vicariously through yours, since we have the same colors and all!

Wow I haven’t used fray check in years since I used to make greek letter shirts (sorority not the country), that stuff is awesome!

That’s a great idea to use the leftover fabric! I wish we would have thought about this earlier — we have tons leftover from our napkins. (Majorly resisting the urge to add on a project this late in the game.) Yours looks so great!

@Miss Snow: Yours are awesome, of course they’ll look great!
@Miss Trail Mix: Ahh too bad I didn’t know, or I’d have packed them up and shipped ‘em off to you!
@Miss French Fries: Not to fan the flame of project-adding, but … they’re pretty easy to make! So if you have oodles of free time ( :D ) you should totally make them!

[...] The first photo ever taken of us (with Dave’s phone, I think), a little less than a month after we started dating.  We’d gone ice skating during a graduate student event with a bunch of my friends from lab/grad school.  I JUST noticed the blue and yellow bunting behind us – oh how we went full circle!!
