Mrs. Thimble's Picture
Mrs. Thimble, NYC/Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Actress & Costume Designer (+ day job) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lawyer & Techie Wiz Engagement Date: August 22, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: The Pearl S. Buck House About Me: I’m an easily inspired over-thinker delighted with the process of designing, building, directing and {dare I say} co-starring in the early-autumn affair I’ve been dreaming up. I’m a sucker for trendied-up comfort foods and old family anecdotes; I have an affinity for adjectives, alliteration, eyelet and earl grey; and I live for quality time with family and friends. I never guessed I’d marry my “high school sweetheart", but when it turned out to be my funny, techie, loyal Mr. Thimble I was committed for life. We’re both mid-career transition and ready to move back to small-townish TBD, PA in a pre-wedding flurry of all-good life changes.

My Dress

June 7th, 2010 @ 4:12 pm by Mrs. Thimble

Yep, there it is. The plainest title of them all for this over-thinking, label-loving, wandering-eyed bride’s dress. For a while, I didn’t like talking about my dress search in any specific terms because I felt like a fail-bride—and you’re about to find out why. So hold on to your hair fascinators—we’re starting at the beginning!

After eight years of dating and 22 months of engagement, the timeline has gotten fuzzy around the edges in my memory. But if I’m not mistaken, I stumbled upon Fern by Melissa Sweet and knew she was it before Mr. Thimble even put a ring on [my finger].

One look at a picture of this beautiful vintagey A-line dream and I was sold. I didn’t even need to go dress shopping. If I could have fit into the size two I found for sale on Encore Bridal, I probably would have purchased it and never looked back. (Or more likely purchased it and looked back later and wondered what if, and ended up in the very same spot… but I’m getting ahead of myself.)

I emailed a picture to my mother, who showed it to my father, who agreed that this was my dress. It had Miss T written all over it. So, logically, my mother and I took a gamble and ventured out to Priscilla of Boston in Wynnewood, PA (at the time- they have since moved) prematurely in December 2008. 22 months before my wedding date. With ample room to make a big emotional, over-analyzing mistake.

Thanks to my addiction to Say Yes to the Dress, I was too brainwashed to even consider bringing a camera to PoB that day. Despite the fact that our consultant left us in the room with the dresses with plenty of time for pictures and without a word about the faux pas of photographing the dresses. I’m still kicking myself over this so I’ll do my best to illustrate for you how Fern ended up looking on me:

{side-by-side comparison with Long Torso Shadow Person found here}

In case those arrows are a little baffling, I have a long torso. I am long-waisted. And, unlike the shadow figure above, I am pear-shaped to boot so I’ve got a low-riding wide load to put it delicately. A-lined gowns generally cover wide hips up, but not when the skirt is an inch thick with accordion pleats. And the sweetheart neckline fell a little low on me, so they would have to alter it by adding height to the boob region. That sounded like it would look awkward. Couple the body image issues with the fact that I’d desensitized myself to beautiful Fern for four months via online stalking before trying her on, and I didn’t have that “zing this is the one!” feeling. It was more of a “Yeah, that’s what Fern looks like.”

Bummer. But not all was lost because we had a whole shoppe of gowns to try!

Enter Bee:

My Dress : wedding philadelphia wedding dress Blog71 Blog+71

{source}

Bee has the same vintage feel as Fern, a fit-and-flare shape the suits my long torso, a bow to accentuate the waist, and bonus: beading throughout the lace for added sparkle I never knew I wanted! This gown was incredible. It was “it”. I had a moment—but I did not have tears. It wasn’t really real yet because the wedding was still so far away.

I also didn’t let myself get too terribly attached because Bee is $6000 give or take thanks to the beading and the allover French lace action that made me love her so. My mom was ready to apply for the PoB credit card for the 15% discount and order the dress on the spot, but I had to be the voice of reason. My budget was capped at “whatever Fern costs”, and I couldn’t let my mom spend 2 grand more than that to pay for Bee.

We took our consultant’s card (who sold me on our venue, singing its praises from a wedding she attended there), bid adieu to the manager (who went to my high school), and pined for those warm and fuzzy feelings for nearly a year until I got “over” Bee.

(Or did I?!?)

Did anyone else make rookie mistake no. 1 and shop too early?

Oh my goodness, yes. I bought my Pronovias Diamante online, WAY before when I should have made a final decision. My heart broke when I realized it just didn’t look as beautiful on me as it did on other brides I had seen it on, and I resold it and got my Manuel Mota Carpatos. Thank goodness for sites like OnceWed and PreOwnedWeddingDresses!!

Well, I bought my dress a year to the day before the wedding but luckily, haven’t really had any dress regret!
I can’t wait to see what you ended up with, the ones you showed are gorgeous!!

For what it’s worth, I was in love with Fern too, and ended up buying it and having it custom made (think it’s 800 more at PoB) because I am only 5′1″. Have you considered that? That way it would be made to your measurements and the proportions would be correct. I am SOOO glad I did it - I dreamt about that dress forever. Good luck!!

Both dresses are gorgeous!! I went through the same thing where I had my dress ‘picked out’ online, but when I had her on it was not-so-much. Can’t wait to see what you ended up with!

*slowly raises hand*

I totally shopped too early. We were still 18 months out when we purchased my dress, which left me with ample time to panic and call another shop about a different dress (a mere two months later) and then (fortunately) realize after trying on my actual dress (instead of the sample that was 10 sizes bigger than mine) when it finally came in that it is the perfect one. Happy ending, but yikes.

Way more stressful than it needed to be.

I cackled at you describing yourself as having a “low-riding wide load.” Well played, Thimble.

Im sorry that Fern didnt work out for you and I cant believe that Bee cost that much…that is too much for a gown…for any piece of clothing. I dont mean that its not hard to fall in love when you put her on and want to pay for it and actually pay that much for it. I mean the way they price them…and the amount of something you fall in love with like that it just stinks. I understand the work that goes into it…but it still stinks! LOL! I had many pictures I loved and took with me that ended up being horrible for my body. The one the sales lady picked out was “The One” and I loved her!

I have a long torso too and thought mine was sitting a little low but it was because of my long torso and one strand of pearls didnt do it. So I found a bulky twisted pearl necklace that made it perfect!

Good luck and cant wait to hear about who you picked!

I shopped early, had a momentary lapse just a few months ago but that helped me realize how perfect my dress was all along. The dress decision is brutal.

::raises hand:: I bought my dress 2 years in advance which, at the time seemed fine since I was in town for a friend’s wedding and went shopping with my mom just to start looking but found a dress from sale rack that I could take home immediately. In shopping for a MOB dress a couple of months ago I ended up trying on another dress that I liked and my mom and aunt agreed so I bought that one and now have an extra wedding dress sitting at my parents house.

Fern is gorgeous. But I do hate wedding shops keep using ’super models’ to blind our eyes. Honestly, without a model figures, ordinary people like me can hardly wear Fern nicely…..

You got to seriously think about that before you make the decision.

I want to try on the Fern now. That’s absolutely gorgeous. However, step one would be to get engaged. :D

Yes, I did. I fell in love with Martina Liana’s dress with the detachable shrug and skirt, only to find I’m waaay to short to pull it off. After I tried it on, I got over it. It’s still a HOT dress though.
