Mrs. Dolphin's Picture
Mrs. Dolphin, Gainesville, FL Age and Occupation: 24, Graduate Architecture Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Interactive Interface Developer Engagement Date: February 14, 2008 Wedding Date: May 2010 Venue: Plantation Bay Country Club About Me: I’m currently a Graduate Student at the University of Florida studying Architecture. I enjoy playing Scrabble with my Fiance, rooting for the Florida Gators, making any drink that involves a blender, cleaning (yes... I’m crazy), design... GOOD design that is, the new Pepsi with natural sugar, taking pictures, discovering new places in the U.S., and obsessing over doing (and designing) everything myself for our upcoming wedding!
About Mrs. Dolphin

The husband and I have decided that we will be designing our own wedding album (more like I will be designing it). I’ve thought of a few ideas of what ’type’ of album we would like, and have been checking into a few companies that will provide us with what we want (without being a professional photographer and paying out the a** too… I apologize for profanities… but do y’all really pay $800 for a wedding album?).

The husband and I want to go for something a little more in the nontraditional category, in terms of wedding albums. We aren’t really into the leather covers, the black matted photos, or even the single image covers (although as we go through the design process, this may all change). We want an album that reflects our wedding, our personalities, and the time we lived in when we got married. I know… that is a lot rolled up into one wedding album; but hey, you gotta dream big, right? Anyways, I’ve found a couple of cute album covers (with even cuter insides), as I’ve been thinking of what type of ’look’ we want for our wedding album.

Another funky cover, this one is an album of the couple’s engagement photos. Too cute! You can see the inside of the album here via Blurb

This album is beautiful, clean and everything that I love. You have to check out the inside of this beauty over on Blurb. Just amazing.

If you ever need ideas when making your wedding album (or any photo album, for that matter), websites like Blurb are great places to get ideas. They have an online store where you can browse other people’s albums they have made.

I plan to make a different album for the husband and myself, than the one we make for our family. The husband and I will naturally want most of our pictures in our album, but I doubt our family members will want them all. We plan to give them a smaller album with key photos from the events of the day—sort of a ’mini-me’ of our album.

As of right now, I plan to use the company Adorama to make a high quality ’coffee table’ style wedding album (that lays FLAT!) for the husband and myself. I will also be ordering the same type of book, but smaller, with less pages, for our parents. I’m a little nervous using a company I’ve never seen the products of before, but as my usual book companies I like to use, Blurb and Lulu, don’t have the type of book I want, I must venture out into the unknown.

My reasons for choosing Adorama (so far):

  • Reasonably priced compared to other professional album companies (compare $50-75 to $300-$700)
  • Their albums lay completely flat when open, providing for full panorama photos to be displayed without a seam
  • They deal directly with you, not through professional photographers (like so many album companies)
  • They came with a good review from a friend
  • When you sign up with them, they give you $15 towards your first order. SCORE!
  • They have about a gazillion different album sizes to choose from
  • This article on how awesome Adorama books are (complete with pictures)

As I’m patiently waiting for our professional pictures to arrive from the Starks, I have sketched up TONS of ideas of our albums.

I plan to make 3 albums for the husband and myself.

One album for our pre-wedding events (bridal shower, engagement part, e-pics, rehearsal dinner, etc). One for our professional wedding pictures and another for our honeymoon pictures. I want all three albums to appear as a ’set’ when they are on a bookshelf. Sort of like below, only cuter and more modern (although these are pretty cute):

Fun, Funky and Modern Wedding Album Designs : wedding albums diy gainesville Box Set

Bed Bath and Beyond; $12.99.

I’m thinking of making them 10″ x 10″, and I’m working on the details of making my own box for the set of books to sit in. Stay tuned for album cover mock-ups! I have so many ideas… I just need to get them all out, digitally.

What did y’all do for your wedding albums? Did you do it yourself? For those who aren’t married yet, do you have any plans for your album?

I love all your ideas and I already know your albums are going to be full of awesomeness!

If it’s something you enjoy doing, maybe you should open an Etsy shop so you can design albums for people like me who still needs to make parents ones, plus I would love one full of pre-wedding activities and our honeymoon!

I used Adoramapix for our parent albums and was THRILLED with the results (this coming from a very picky graphic designer who is often unhappy with the print quality of other companies).

I think I’m going to try http://pikto.ca/books/ which is located in the distillery district of Toronto. I hear really great reviews and I’m pretty sure its what some photographers are using to make photobooks for their clients and while it’s not horribly inexpensive I think its somewhat reasonable (we’re using our guest book to be like “the story of evan and kate” that guests will sign like its a yearbook)

Perhaps I’ll write up my experiences with this when I’m done!

I used Adorama for our wedding album and couldn’t be happier with the end product! The quality of the paper, the colors, not to mention the reasonable pricing, loved it all. I get so many complements on it and the process was really easy to tailor to exactly what we wanted. Once I designed our album, I was able to print two other identical copies in smaller sizes to give to our families. The whole experience was better than I could have ever hoped. Have fun desgining!

I just made a photo guestbook using adorama, and I absolutely LOVE how it turned out! I’m a total photo snob, and I thought the quality was fantastic.

I actually got a photo album set at my shower that had 3 books, one for shower pictures, one for the wedding photos and one for the honeymoon, I think it’s such a cute idea!

Thanks for the roundup. I also said hells no to the expensive “in the package” photo book option and my photog, being the Awesome McAwesomeness that she is, suggested Costco. I was like, whhaatt? Costco? She said in her professional opinion, their photo processing is just as good as a professional. Aaannd, they just so happen to have just launched a photo book site:
http://www.costcophotocenter.com/account/default.aspx?ReturnUrl=/Default.aspx

I’m not giving an endorsement, bc I’ve never used it before, I’m just throwing it out there as an option.

I just got my boudoir photo book from Adorama and let me tell you - I LOVE IT! It turned out so amazing - I was very impressed by the quality. Its definitely a step up from Blurb, Shutterfly, etc. Great choice!

@Lillindy: I’m planning on opening an Etsy shop soon! I’ve just been putting together tons of design items to fill my shop. :-) I want to design albums for brides too! Anything from just an Album cover, to the whole sha-bang!

So glad everyone had good experiences with Adorama, makes me feel better about my decision!!

We never got around to sorting through all of our wedding photos, so I’m planning to do a photobook of memories our 5th wedding anniversary come up. I love your boxed set idea.

I am a professional photographer - and we do pay $800 for an album. We pay that because they are archival quality.

One thing worth noting is that a lot of the layflat books available to consumers have plastic hinges which degrade over time and often break.

As for the photographer who said CostCo was on par with professional prints - I highly doubt it. Photo processors like that do a reasonable job but they don’t compare to the paper and inks used by companies such as WHCC.

:)
