Ms Seahorse's Picture
Ms Seahorse, Boston Age and Occupation: 25, Veterinary Jane-of-all-trades Fiancee's Age and Occupation: 36, former non-profit fundraiser in search of something better Engagement Date: October 17, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Fort Pond Lodge About Me: By day I'm a cat-wrangler, vet tech assistant, pet-sitter, receptionist, and pre-vet student, but the rest of the time, I'm a former-roller-derby girl turned dedicated-wedding planner. I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.
About Ms Seahorse

I think that a lot of people have the weddings they are “supposed” to have. They invite people they “have” to invite and wear what they “should” wear.

This is not something that I am entirely innocent of doing. I bought a dress even though I knew early on I wanted to wear pants and a vest… but I bought a dress that I liked, and I’m not giving up the suit – I’m changing after the ceremony. Who wants to contradance in a floofy dress, anyway? Okay, some people do, but they are not me.

In the wedding blogosphere, I make a point to read blogs that support independence, and offer ideas and solutions. Wear whatever you want! Feed lunch, breakfast, appetizers, nothing! Cook everything yourself (or cook nothing yourself!)! Wear anything but white! Spend all the money that feels right to you, and be true to yourself.

So I’m channeling this authenticity as much as I can, and I feel like, on the whole, I’m being pretty true to myself, and we, as a couple, are being true to ourselves. But there are a couple of sort of “traditional” things that I am bumping into.

First: shoes.

Shoes are the smaller issue. I know I can wear whatever I want – but I also want to be taken seriously! I want to look nice, and not for my shoes to jump out like a sore thumb. I want them to jump out like an interesting thumb. Fancee will be wearing a dress the whole time, and is on the prowl for some nice cowboy boots. Totally hot. I love this look, I think she’ll be adorable, and look nice and interesting at the same time.

… and I’ll Cry if I Want To. : wedding boston shoes Karaboo

pretty bride in cowboy boots - fun!

I, on the other hand, am more difficult. I can’t wear boots because one of my calves (um, yes, just one, thank you) is too muscular for any boots to fit over. I hate heels, and I know I won’t be comfortable in them, so scrap that. I found some sandals that I love, but I know they’ll come flying off if I try to dance in them. Nothing seems to be just right!

And then I found Chacos.

… and I’ll Cry if I Want To. : wedding boston shoes 1396 564165 P 1396-564165-p

I love Chacos. My roommate and I used to do a happy song/dance every spring when we declared it “Chaco season.” They look half-decent with a dress (in my dykey opinion) and good with anything else. They are easy on and off, they dry fast, they stay put, and you can even go hiking in them. But are they wedding shoes? Are they really what I want?

Under a dress, no one will see them, or any other shoes I wear. With my suit, they’ll be obvious, but I’m not sure there’s anything wrong with that. I think I need someone to tell me that either they are completely awesome and they love that idea or tell me why I’m being ridiculous so that I can either argue with them, thus realizing I really want these shoes, or agree with them and move on. Will I be an amazing Chaco bride? Or someone who doesn’t know how to dress herself?

The other bump I hit is bridesmaids. And that is a post for another day. So please tell me about shoes. What are you wearing, and why? I don’t think I even own dress shoes – again, I don’t do heels, and the closest I’ve gotten is Danskos. What do you wear for fancy things? Thanks, guys.

You’re fabulous Miss Seahorse, FABULOUS for being a proponent of having the wedding that YOU (generic you and otherwise) want. Kudos!
I hear your pain on the shoes. I didn’t want to wear anything too expensive, nothing tall, something comfortable, so I was thinking of wearing Crocs. There are some cute styles, and no one is going to see them under my dress anyway.
Then my Mom gifted me a pair of Kate Spade Natalias, and let me tell you….like buttah!!!

What about Reefs? I somehow feel flip flops without buckles and hiking soles would be a middle ground between sandals and shoes and still allow your feet to be comfortable.

I think you should go with patent leather dansko’s with the suit! Totally hot.

Or a big chunky pair of red mary janes.

Ooo! Or these! http://www.6pm.com/kangaroos-lotus-red

A good friend of mine got married in these and she kept the rings in the little zippered pockets. When the minister wanted the rings, the besties just leaned over and took them out of her shoes!

I am not a huge fan of Chacos, but I AM a huge fan of feeling comfortable and confident on your wedding day. What about some Rainbow sandals instead? I really like the way those look with a suit or a dress.

I wore the 3″ heels I was supposed to wear for the ceremony, and then couldn’t stand the pain and went barefoot/flip-flopped under my huge dress for the formal photos and reception. Best decision ever.

“in my dykey opinion”–haha great phrase. if you had just picked these shoes out of the blue, i might say that it’s worth looking for something else, but you actually love these shoes so that makes a big difference. i will say that actually my shoes peeked out from under the skirt many times–unless you have a ballgown skirt, the toes will peek out as you walk, sit, whatever. but if you’re okay with the chacos showing with your dress, then it’s all good!

i wore platform heels for the ceremony and then changed into white platform flip-flops (two other brides have borrowed them since that time).

Chaco happens to make some very pretty, less utilitarian looking flip flops (I live in mine all summer), maybe they have some sandals that are more up to the occasion, but still super comfy?

I am all about being comfortable on your wedding day and doing what you want, but I really do not like the Chacos in combination with a wedding suit (at least, not the pair you posted). While they are well-suited to hiking, getting wet, and drying quickly, you will not be hiking or wading in the river on your wedding day, will you?

Underneath a dress it wouldn’t really bother me, as your feet will be largely hidden. But when you change into your suit, you should wear a shoe that is a neutral color and closed toe. Chacos with a suit are going to stick out like the sore thumb you said you wanted to avoid.

The Danskos, on the other hand, look like a great option for you—you know you like them, and you can get a neutral color to match your suit, if you don’t already own some. I think these other ladies have some great ideas for comfortable, more formal and occasion-appropriate footwear. You CAN look awesome and be comfortable at the same time, I promise! :)

I love Chacos and I would totally respect a Chaco-wearing bride!

But if you’re not sold on then, I’m sure there’s some similar type of shoes that is more aesthetically pleasing, like maybe Merrell’s or something, they make cute sandals…

OOH - danskos has a great sandal line that will stay on your feet and be super comfy - or you could look at some of their mary janes (I have a pair in red patent leather and I LOVE them) The sandals are great but they just don’t say “your wedding” to me. Something slightly less utilitarian but just as funky is called for on this occasion

I gotta say, I’m not a fan of chacos-as-wedding-footwear look. The combination of such utilitarian shoes with a formal dress or suit is just a bit too jarring.

Rebecca - I laughed out loud at that! in glee, of course. That is fantastic! Not quite the style I’m going for (apparently there is SOME style I’m going for…still trying to figure that out), but those aren’t QUITE right… getting there though :)

chelseamorning I actually do plan to wade around in a pond! Fun wedding day! but really I get your point. I just wish this were simpler.

Thanks for your words of support everyone. Now run off and find me some shoes? thanks!

I’m looking for a simple pair of cute and comfy ballet flats - they’re a bit fancier than sandals and I can wear them in real life after the wedding. You could get plain ones or leopard print or ones covered in sparkles!

I love that your fiancee is wearing cowboy boots - I’m rocking a pair, as well!

I have no excellent shoe advice, but I do want to give you a virtual high-five (because, well I’m not the huggy-type) for making me feel better knowing there is another one-calf too big for boots gal out there!! I finally had a custom fitting for ski boots this year and I felt like a freak when they said, “WOW! you have huge calf, just this one….how does that happen?”. (and I might have told them the calf was larger since that’s the leg I used to kick people in the @ss) ;)

I got a pair of flats that are super comfy at Target for about $12. They have flowers on them in a “this is either cool or looks like grandmas’s couch” sort of way. But if I weren’t wearing a short dress I’d be rockin my Reefs!

I get that you want to be comfortable. And I’m a solid fan of Chacos. But for walking around festivals, hiking, hanging out in the park. There’s just no way I could convince myself that they’d be okay with any kind of formal outfit. Maybe they wouldn’t show with your dress, but what’s the fun in that anyway? And sandals with a suit just doesn’t make sense to me. What about wing tips (either oxford or flat style) with the suit? What about flats with the dress? Whatever you decide, good luck! And if your heart screams Chacos, go for it, but don’t give up too quickly!

You can and should wear whatever YOU want, because it’s your day!! :) Although, I would tend to say push yourself to wear something on the dressy side since it’s a formal occasion. At least for the ceremony!

I am wearing silver heels for the ceremony then changing into silver flats for dancing. I will be tripping on my dress, but that’s okay!

Chacos are amazing! I’m wearing mine with my dress! Also, in my non-dykey opinion they’d look great with your suit. My guy wears them with his khakis almost every Sunday.

…as long as they don’t make actual flip-flop sounds when walking. That might detract a little bit from the scene, you know?

Actually, these are super pretty and on sale and how could you want anything more than that:
