I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.

TV Land Inspiration

June 7th, 2010 @ 11:28 am by Mrs. Knitting

Shortly after telling my parents that Mr. Knitting and I were engaged, my father (one of my very best wedding co-conspirators) and I celebrated by watching the episode of Friends that featured Phoebe’s wedding. While I will probably concede that Pam and Jim’s wedding is the ultimate TV wedding (for now, anyway!), I love Phoebe’s wedding because it had so many elements about it that I love.

Firstly, it’s a winter wedding. Yay! I didn’t really realize that winter weddings were uncommon until I started planning my own. To me, it seems like such a great time of year, so it didn’t occur to me that not everyone agrees. Anyway, it was nice to see some winter wedding inspiration.

Secondly, I love that it’s so low key. Her wedding truly was a community event, and that fact is underscored by the fact that Joey married them. I’d love to have a friend marry us.

Finally, I love that she walked down the aisle to the Beatles song Here, There, and Everywhere, which I believe was played on steel drums. I have loved that song forever, and after seeing that I decided to use the same song for my processional. The fact that I was inspired by (read - am flat out copying) something from a TV show is my dirty wedding planning secret. I generally try to be a bit more original. I think it’s the fact that I have loved this song since I was ten made the copying okay for me. Plus, it’s not like I’m also using steel drums. Although that would be awesome…

Anyone else have a dirty wedding planning secret?

I never saw this episode!! Then again, I didn’t get on the Friends bandwagon until it was almost over :( Love winter weddings and I wish sometimes I could have gone that route, but family wouldn’t have braved the Colorado mountains for sure.

I LOVED this episode so much, I think it’s great wedding inspiration! My dirty wedding secret is that our programs are wrong (GASP!!!) I did them while ago but then we moved our venue inside, and our friends volunteered to do the music, but the programs list the lead singer from our reception band as the musician…OOOPS!

I absolutely love this episode too! I find that it doesn’t get as much love as Monica and CHandler’s wedding but I love it just as much! :)

Our recessional was to “All You Need is Love” by the Beatles and I totally stole it from Love Actually. No Shame in it. But ours was on the organ… we didn’t have random musicians popping up from the crowd!

I was watching Gossip Girl a few months ago (so many wedding episodes, first of all!), and I stopped short when I heard the ring vows used in Blair’s mom’s wedding. So we totally got the beginning of our ring vows from Gossip Girl - “I take you to be no one other than yourself” - which I know are semi-traditional and have been used in other places, but that’s where I heard it!

There is nothing more magical than a winter wedding. All the white and reflecting light outside, and warm and fuzzy inside! Great choice to go with a December wedding!

I totally get your semi-reluctance in using a tv show as inspiration. But when something resonates and feels beautiful it’s hard to pass up! I’m so see all the elements of your winter wedding come together!

I totally dig your secret as I want to use Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing’” in string quartet form as my processional, which I got from Adam Sandler’s, The Wedding Singer.

i don’t know many people who would be able to name the tv wedding reference even if you copied it to a tee so don’t worry. i would never apologize for the genesis of an inspiration. you never know when it’ll hit!

Winter weddings are awesome. I so wish I had done one! Our dirty secret was that I shoved Twilight in wherever possible. We used movie quotes on the back of our RSVP cards & Twilight made several appearances. We used movie/TV instrumental songs during our cocktail hour, and of course Twilight was in there. Our intro song was from Twilight, and I stuck 3-5 more in the reception. Yep, I’m THAT lame, but I only one person noticed, and our intro to “Spotlight” was one of my favorite moments of the day!

P.S. I totally agree about Jim & Pam’s wedding. We *almost* did our intro to “Forever” as a nod to them, but didn’t have time to practice. I worked on my routine in the car for months, so we played the song at the reception, and though hubby was torn away right at that moment for family pictures, my niece and I rocked it out! LOL I’m such a dork!
