About Mrs. Cola

What was it? Getting our marriage license! Honestly, I don’t think I’ve been excited about any other legal document, except when I got my driver’s license when I was 16!

In California it was ridiculously easy to get our marriage license.

We filled out the paperwork in advance, showed up at the County Clerk’s office around opening time, waited about 3-4 minutes for our number to be called, swore we filled out the forms accurately, wrote a check for $79, and signed the forms. That was it!

It was also convenient that I could enter my new last name (I’ll be hyphenating, for reasons I posted here) on the license application, so our marriage license will have my new name on it.

Of course, we had to take the required blog photo outside the Clerk’s office with our license! :)

Ours was scarily easy. Print, fill out, send in. No swearing, no blood work, no nothing.

Man, everyone else’s licenses are so cheap! We have to fork out $110. Grr. But, I already sent FH a meeting request for August 23 to go to get ours :-)

Funny! I think we got our licenses at the same place. Just FYI in case you don’t already know: after you get married, you need to request your marriage certificate and fork over $14 per original. They don’t just send it to you when they receive the signed license.

Congrats. We had to get our license in a trailer since the beautiful historic courthouse in my hometown burned down in the summer of 2006.

We picked up our license the Friday before Memorial Day, and I’m still stumbling over the fact that they DIDN’T ASK FOR IDENTIFICATION!!!! Whaaat? Please tell me you had to show id, and that it was just a rural north Idaho thing?

Woohoo! Ours took about 2.2 seconds, which was nice. I was wearing crap that day, just from the gym, so we don’t have any pictures. :p

Getting our license in Michigan had to be the easiest process ever. There’s an online form that I filled out and it’s submitted to them. I printed that off to be sure of the info and brought it with me. Paid $20 and signed up for our marriage license. My fiance did not even have to be there or sign anything. They didn’t need birth certificates or anything (which actually kind of creeped me out how easy it was to sign up to marry someone seemingly w/o their consent). Anywho, I went back 3 days later to pick it up. Easy peasy!

I’m so glad we live in a small town. All the stories I hear about this process in California, etc. just seems difficult. I think I would’ve had a mini break down. lol

Is that Santa Clara County? We just got ours there a couple of weeks ago!! =) No wait, either, we got there right at 8 am (via VTA — w00t!)! It’s weird, but this silly $79 piece of paper was one of my “omgomg, we’re really getting married” moments!

Getting our marriage license was also really easy. We thought it would be packed, so we planned a whole day off to do it. We were in and out in 10 minutes. Nobody in line at all. It only cost $30. More if you wanted to request three extra copies ahead of time, which they tell you that you need, but you don’t really. The hard part has been waiting for the marriage certificate to come back, so I can officially change my last name! It’s already been almost 3 weeks (the max they told us), and nothing!
