About Mrs. French Fries

In our search for a wedding cake vendor, we took a pretty circuitous route: we thought we were going with Company A, then realized that they were too expensive. Then, we thought we were going with Company B, but they never emailed us back (still, to date, some of the worst customer service I’ve received). Then finally at our venue’s food tasting, we landed upon Company C, who we quickly booked upon tasting the cake and getting a rough per-person estimate.

Actually, “Company C” is more like “Woman C Who Does This Out Of Her Home” or “WCWDTOOHH”, if you’re into acronyms. We met with her back in the early spring and quickly decided on a two tier cake. The bottom tier will have chocolate cake with peanut butter cup frosting/filling, and the top tier will have chocolate cake with mint chocolate chip frosting/filling. Delicious. We left the appointment with strict instructions: call 2-3 weeks before the wedding to set up a date to drop off our final payment, and any cake accoutrements that we might have (flowers, topper, etc). Easy peasy.

So, I called this past week to set up our final payment date and talked WCWDTOOHH. She quickly went over our order: the tiers, the flavors, and how we wanted it decorated (in her words, “frosted smooth, with big borders”). Um, sure. I’m not exactly sure what “big borders” means, but I think she’s talking about the frosting in the little crack between the top tier and the bottom tier. Maybe. Sure, let’s go with that.

Then she asked me if I had a topper —

I replied that I had ordered a large clay cake flower, and I wanted it placed in the side of the cake, rather than on top as a “topper”. What clay cake flower, you may be asking yourself? Why, this one right here, from Etsy seller FentonFlorals.

It’s pretty kick ass, if I do say so myself. Anyway, I told her about the flower and then she asked if I had another one “for the cake that you’ll be cutting”. Um….say what? I always assumed that we’d be cutting into the big cake. You know, the one that they’ll be ushering in the back to cut for everyone to eat? I was kind of thrown by her asking me this, so I just said “um, no… I only have one.” To which she replied, “well, I’ll have to figure out something to decorate for other cake that you’ll cut, then.” Okey dokey.

I can only surmise that we’ll have one big “show” cake with our cake flower stuck into the side, and then another little cake for the two of us to cut? I’m not sure how I feel about that — I always thought we’d be cutting the “big” cake. Additionally, I’m not 100% sure how they’re going to look. But, at this point I also don’t really care. It’s too late in the game for that.

I know three important things: 1) that there will be a cake at our wedding, 2) that the cake will be delicious, regardless of how it looks or how many cakes there are, and 3) that people don’t really remember what the cake looks like after the wedding, anyway. Case in point — we were at a wedding 3 weeks ago and while I remember the cake was quite tasty, I couldn’t tell you what it looked like or how it was decorated. Oh, and if people aren’t into our chocolate cake combinations, there will be plenty of other desserts for them to choose from, including strawberry shortcake, fresh fruit, and cheesecake squares. That just means more leftover cake for me to eat after the reception’s over. :)

For wedding cake, which is more important to you: how it looks, or how it tastes? (I think we all know I’m in the “taste” category.)

I hope it all works out! I would have drilled her for an explanation because I would be freaking out! Congratulations to you for being much calmer!! I’m sure it will rock. And that flower is awesome

Sounds delish! And you seem very laid back about the whole thing, which is probably good! It sounds like it will work out fine. I suppose it wouldn’t hurt just to clarify with WCWDTOOHH why she’s doing a separate one and if you really want to cut the big cake…say so! :)

Uh ohhh. Sounds like one of those situations you might be kicking yourself later for not asking more questions. I would be afraid that she had our order mixed with someone else’s… cause I’ve never heard of a separate cutting cake.

Good luck!

what a beautiful flower! :)
While I LOVE looking at wedding cakes, this was actually something we both decided wasn’t that “important” to our wedding. I found a look I love - and luckily I’m married to a caterer! His boss (who owns the business) makes cakes too (although not ‘fancy’ like bakery or anything - but pretty enough…) and so he’s doing ours. I gave him a picture of what I want it to look like and that’s that. I’m not concerned over details other than the top teir (ours) be red velvet). ;p
But - as far as our cake-situation goes for our wedding - I personally couldn’t see spending as much money as some can spend on a cake - and as long as we have one, that’s what matters! :p

@kara: @trishisadish: Just to be clear, I’m planning on asking her about the separate “cutting cake” — if we can cancel it and cut the big one, then great! If not, we’ll deal. :)

@The IKEA Bride: I’m not concerned that she got our order mixed up with someone else’s — she had our venue, delivery time, cake flavors, # of servings, etc. all correct…I just think a few of the kinks in the details need to be worked out. :)

@Twista: Donuts is a great idea! Yum!

@JuneBride_26June2010: I agree completely! Red velvet is delicious. :)

Sometimes to save costs what you get is a “show cake” where the bottom layers are fake– basically cardboard that’s decorated in frosting, and only the very top layer is a real cake. Then the rest of your cake is a sheet cake that’s cut in the back in the kitchen. We encountered this a number of times in our venue hunt. Might this be what’s happening?

@Mrs. Parfait: Thanks! I think it turned out really well. :)

@Mrs. Hamster: I hope so! This woman has a pretty good repuatation around here, so I think it’ll be just fine.

@ecorachel: Hmmm, I’ve heard of that, but I really don’t think that’s the case here. She’s never mentioned anything about sheet cakes, and asked me how many layers of filling I’d like in each tier. :)

heheh… I have to giggle as I read this. I am in the same boat. NO CLUE what the cake will actually look like. We took 3 different cake designs and meshed it (messed it, perhaps?) into one cake. It will be fine. It will be yummy!
(bottom layer is strawberry then strawberry buttercream filling and raspberry devils food cake— the middle layer is coconut cake, lemon butter cream and then lemon cake and the top layer is all strawberry).
I don’t care at this point what it looks like — It will taste FABULOUS.

I’m definitely on the taste train! Cake is the one thing I look forward to the most at our reception and hoping for LOTS of leftovers for me, myself, and I and some for my FH, of course! :-)

Taste! And I’d also ask her for more info about the 2 cakes because it would stress me out!

It’s possible that the two-tier cake she’s making isn’t big enough to feed all of your guests? So there’s an extra cake to make up the difference?

Don’t know.

But I loved your “Okey dokey” at the end of that explanation. :) Sometimes with wedding planning I’m tired of micro-managing and re-stating things and just want to say “whatever, I’ve put in the order, we’ll just see what shows up”. I think that’s a perfectly ok answer — especially making the point that she has a good rep — there will be cake! That’s what counts!

I make wedding cakes, adn what she said makes no sense to me, so I’d be asking more questions! The “big borders” could be dangerous, because it sounds like she’s planning on doing some kind of an old-school shell border. The flower is pretty, though, and as long as the cake tastes good and it has the flower on it as the main decoration you’ll be fine! I’m with you on the taste, too, but you don’t want your cake to show up on cakewrecks, either.
