Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.
About Mrs. Knitting

I am in love with my ring, which is a good thing since I picked it out. However, while it does have 17 diamonds, I’m not so sure one would describe it as bling. I’m generally pretty understated in terms of my style, and I think my ring is no exception. Choosing my ring was a relatively simple process since I did this before I learned about how many amazing wedding resources there are on the internet.

Anyway, I wasn’t exactly actively looking for a ring when I found this one (see, I’m not totally nuts!), but I was aware I’d probably be in the market for an engagement ring soon. Hence, I was kind of keeping an eye out. Since I like lists, here’s a list of all the places I (sort of) looked.

1) St. Lawrence Market Antique Market. My go to place for everything and one of my favourite places in the city. I’ll have a longer post on the market soon, since it’s definitely going to figure strongly in our wedding planning process. I love the idea of a vintage ring. I would love to wear my mom or grandmother’s wedding ring, but as that’s not an option for me I was willing to settle for something vintage. Anyway, I kept an eye out for potential rings during a few of my visits, but didn’t see anything that would really work for me.

2) Tiffany. I have to admit I browsed on their website more than once. The store itself doesn’t really appeal to me, but I did like this ring quite a bit.

Unfortunately, this ring was a lot more than we wanted to spend, so I moved on.

3) Birks. I was just, you know, casually browsing their website when I came across the perfect ring. Here it is:

Here’s a photo of me wearing it:

I loved the fact that’s it’s a bit different than a solitaire and slightly unusual but still beautiful and classic. I’m actually going to wear it as both my engagement and wedding ring. That keeps it simple for me!

I’m a bit sad it’s not vintage, but ultimately I think it’s better that way. This is a piece of jewelry I’ve become very emotionally attached to and I think it just gives me better peace of mind to know exactly where it came from (and whom I can bring it to if something goes wrong!).

I’d love to hear from any of you ladies (or gents) with vintage or antique rings. Where it did you find your ring? What was the process like for you?

It’s gorgeous! And I love that it will also be your wedding band. It already kind of looks like it has two bands anyways! :-)

My ring has a vintage stone (that our jeweler reclaimed from a vintage ring) but the gold was recycled and made to fit the stone.

I love your band–I actually considered something very similar for my wedding band, except it had one row of sapphires (where your band is gold) and one row of diamonds. The quality ended up not being as good as we had hoped and I couldn’t find another one with the sapphires that was better.

Oh I love it! I really like the angle, and the fact that it’ll be your wedding band, too!

I really like your ring! And it’s way practical too having the engagement/wedding ring in one. :)

I love it!! My mom has a solitaire as her engagement ring and a channel set diamond band as her wedding ring. Somewhere along the line she also bought a plain gold band as well. She’s a social worker (in projects and the jail, etc) and now a teaching assistant for elementary schoolers and she often wears the plain gold band as a wedding ring and the diamond band as if it were her engagement ring. Lately I’ve admired it’s simplicity and I love you pretty example of a similar style.

I did the same thing…my engagement ring is a band that will serve as both my e-ring and my wedding band. It was important for us to find one peice of jewelry that we loved and that would have a lot of meaning for us. I’m not really into flashy jewelry anyway, so I don’t miss having a big rock. I ended up with a Kirk Kara band from the Charlotte collection (the one with sapphires).

Question: What will you do for the ceremony? Will you take the ring off prior to the ceremony and then put it back on? I’m afraid my hand will feel totally naked without the ring. I’m not sure what we’ll do yet.

@Ashpash I looked up your ring and it’s so nice! And yes, that’s exactly what I’m doing.

You and I have the same (out of our budget) taste! I loved the same Tiffany ring, and instead found something through a local Main Street jeweler for 1/3 the price. The antique-y feel will look really cool next to my streamlined asscher cut ring!

I fell in love with a ring similar to this one. . .the only problem is that they sell it as a trio (engagement + 2 w. bands). . .
I already have my engagement ring, my fiance is not very keen on having dimonds in his w. band, result? I’m screwed :(
probably I’ll have to have it made. . .we’ll see

I wanted a vintage ring, too, but my fiance really wanted to surprise me, so he got a vintage-inspired ring. I really like your ring - I wanted something similar - actually the trinity ring from Cartier. But hello, even simple at Cartier is crazy expensive!

@OctPumpkin I LOVE the trinity ring too! It’s so gorgeous, but yes, definitely out of my price range.

Beautiful ring! I love your taste. We have a similar sense of style. My engagement ring is my fiance’s great-grandmother’s and it is 107 years old! It is a simple rose gold ring with a diamond solitaire set in a six prong platinum setting. My wedding band is the original band that went with the ring, 107 years old two. It is a thick rose gold ring with the original engraving–my fiance’s great-grandparents’ initials and their wedding date in 1904. It is really, really special to me. I love old things and things with significance and a special story.
