I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.

Dance With Me, Kermit

June 8th, 2010 @ 6:08 pm by Mrs. Pudding

Mr. Pudding and I have been completely clueless about our first dance song. We have been talking about it for months, and haven’t been able to make up our minds. The problem is that while I would be content with any old romantic song, Mr. Pudding wants to dance to something sentimental, but not gushy.

Yesterday we had our first dance lesson. Since we didn’t have a song picked out, we asked our instructor to teach us to Waltz. To our surprise, we picked it up quite easily, and really enjoyed ourselves! We came home and began searching the internet for songs that we could waltz to - which is no easy feat!

Suddenly, Mr. Pudding stumbled upon a song that made him choke up. Mr. Pudding does not get choked up easily, so I knew that he must have found something good. What he found, was this:

According to Mr. Pudding, this song makes him think of his childhood, and how far he has come in his life. The lyrics aren’t necessarily about love, but Mr. P says that it summarizes our belief as a couple that the world is generally a good, happy place, and that we must always strive to reach for the stars. He says that our wedding day will be his “Rainbow Connection”.

Mr. Pudding does not get excited about a wedding decision very often, so this song is a serious contender (especially since Mr. P has guaranteed that there will be a tear shed on his part if we dance to this song). The only problem is the fact that Mr. P would like to have his favorite childhood entertainer sing the song.

Ummm…growing up in communist Poland made me miss the whole Muppets craze. Having Kermit perform our first dance song just seems weird to me. I am not against the song, as long as it’s performed by someone with a pulse!

Mr. Pudding requested that I put it to the hive, so I am asking you to take sides on this one: Would you allow Kermit to make a (vocal) appearance at your wedding?

I honestly would not like the little green man signing at my wedding BUT the one thing my sister still tells me (as I plan my wedding) is that she regrets to this day that she did not listen to her husband about the song he wanted. He picked a song that was really not a first dance song so my sister said no and thought not a big deal of it. But it was the only thing he requested and truly wanted, she still regrets it. So I would say have that as a first dance but do another slow dance song later as well. Why can’t you both be happy?

I’m thinking Kermit may not be great but the Jason Mraz version is nice. I figure (usually anyway) how often does the groom have an opinion about anything wedding-related? I’d go for it!

Oh my gosh, my husband does the BEST impression of this song in his Kermit voice. It is my favorite thing ever! The song does sound kind of cheesy, but I have heard about more men tearing up when hearing it than you would believe.

By the way, I let my husband pick our first dance song and I am really glad I did. Go for it!

The Sarah McLauchlan version is very nice - could you please him by getting one with Kermit and one without and just splicing in a little Kermit section, instead of the whole song? That could be cute without being too, too much perhaps?

I say, go for it! I love this song, even with Kermit singing. ;)

Of course, I also think mustaches are hilarious. And pun jokes. So I may not have the best taste. (I just thought you needed a disclaimer.)

i am using this for father/daughter song - i love it!! i sent the band the sarah mclachlan version. i think you can compromise - he can have to song he likes, but you get to nix the kermit voice. i think kermit voice would just annoy me and stand out as something i regretted. but that’s me.

I think the jason mraz version is a great compromise.

If I was in your situation, I would request a compromise - go for the song he wants, but let you choose who sings it. Seems fair to me…

One more thing @gji7: I think there is a version like this. I had it on a record when I was a kid. The professional singer (I think it was a woman) says something like “don’t you think, Kermit,” and he sings a section. Then it finishes with the other singer.

So I get that the muppets must seem weird if you didn’t grow up with them, but unless he wants a puppeteer to come perform it, or to have a video of Kermit in the background, I don’t think using the Kermit version is a big deal. It’s not like he has a super crazy voice, like Alvin and the Chipmunks or something. The people like your FI who’d recognize it as Kermit will probably think it’s sweet and cute, and the people who weren’t into the Muppets probably won’t realize that it’s a guy’s hand singing :) Is it the voice itself that bothers you, or just knowing that it’s a puppet performing?

@shantastic: Yes! It was sung by Blondie’s Debbie Harry in a duet with Kermit on The Muppet Show in 1981 (from wikipedia…)

MY DAD AND I ARE DANCING TO THIS SONG!!!

Okay, so now that I’m done peeing my pants, I would say that “The Rainbow Connection” sung by anyother other than Kermit dee Frogg just doesn’t have the same sweetness.

My husband and his mother danced to the Kermit version of ‘Rainbow Connection’. Everyone was singing and swaying along…definitely one of the best moments of our reception. Go for it!

I am a raging Muppets fanatic, so I think this is a great idea! Mr. Hellopanda and I chose “He’ll Make Me Happy” from the Muppets Take Manhattan for our cake-cutting song. So not only did we have Kermit singing, but we also had Piggy singing and then an entire chorus of Muppets. It was pretty glorious and went nicely with our Kermit and Piggy cake topper.

Aw I love this song - and I actually have the Kermit version on my ipod ;-) It brings me back to my childhood dance classes. If he has sentimental reasons for wanting the Kermit version, I say go for it! :-)

It’s SUCH a sweet song. I, personally, would have a hard time with the voice of good ole Kermie at my wedding so I’m going to have to vote for Jason Mraz.
