Mrs. Thimble, NYC/Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Actress & Costume Designer (+ day job) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lawyer & Techie Wiz Engagement Date: August 22, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: The Pearl S. Buck House About Me: I’m an easily inspired over-thinker delighted with the process of designing, building, directing and {dare I say} co-starring in the early-autumn affair I’ve been dreaming up. I’m a sucker for trendied-up comfort foods and old family anecdotes; I have an affinity for adjectives, alliteration, eyelet and earl grey; and I live for quality time with family and friends. I never guessed I’d marry my “high school sweetheart", but when it turned out to be my funny, techie, loyal Mr. Thimble I was committed for life. My Dress 3

June 8th, 2010 @ 3:00 pm by Mrs. Thimble

Quickie recap: I fell in love with a costly dress in December ’08, and I purchased a different (albeit similarly vintagey) designer sample in Spring ’09 and the money went to charity {Huzaaah!!}. But my heart wasn’t in it.

By the time this past February came around, I was coming up on major crunchy-decision time. I’d had little luck finding a used Bee and with a nearly year long search I had pretty much desensitized myself to the gown’s beauty as I had with Fern. It was time to turn my attention elsewhere and embrace the undeniably gorgeous gown hanging in my parents’ office, waiting for the go-ahead for a good dry cleaning and alterations.

With some time to kill on an unseasonably warm Sunday in Pennsylvania, and a hankering for some wedding fun {I’d been laying low since the holidays}, my mom and I decided to take a gander at David’s Bridal’s bridesmaids gowns. And I—genius that I am—thought it would be a fine opportunity to take some pictures of me in my gown before we left for reference when choosing dresses—and possibly maybe for reassurance that I stilled loved it but I would never admit to that.

For the rest of this post I declare:

Disclaimer: I was standing on a stool because of the extreme length of this dress. My mom also slipped while holding the train and following me down the hardwood stairs while wearing slippery socks.* The dress was, as we know, not yet altered. These things put me in a wack mood and led me to believe that this dress is NOT flattering. OK, now you can look.

{personal photos}

In case the pictures aren’t storyboard enough, I discovered that the re-embroidered lace pattern opens up into a flourished upside-down V-shape accentuating my larger lower half: specifically a poochy belly I denied I ever had. Game over.

The thing about Bee was that it encouraged the eye to focus on the pretty bow at the waist and the cascading ruffled tiers of the skirt. Not all Fit-’n'-Flares are created equal, it would seem.

This is nothing that a good pair of Spanx can’t fix. Unfortunately, I was pushed off the perch of my fence onto the anti-thisdress dark side, and the climb back to the good side looked impossibly difficult.

After this disappointing impromptu photo shoot, I still wanted to go to David’s Bridal to look at the bridesmaids dresses to try to cheer myself up. Of course I had no expectations of finding anything there that I’d like—I was just giving the franchise a chance as a favor to my bridesmaids’ wallets and for the sake of convenience.

You probably see where this is going…

And so I made rookie mistake 3: Trying on my dress without being in my absolute best glowy self-confident mood. Any takers on this one? Fellow second guessers?

uh, what pooch are you even talking about? you look incredible!

obviously if you’ve made up your mind, it’s pretty much a done deal, but I don’t understand what’s supposed to be unflattering about any of these pictures. :(

Are you kidding me! I sucked my breath in a little when I saw you in that dress - you KILL it!! It is beautiful and so are you!!

But of course, I also understand that it is all about how you feel in it. But I hope you can grow to see yourself as beautiful in those photos!

@Jo: Thank you! I just mean that I was in a terrible not-my-best mood. And it totally affected my opinion of the dress on me, not necessarily the reality. And I over-thought this whole process WAY too much.

For the record you look great in that dress! But I know what you mean about second thoughts. I’m having them now and I never thought I would. I just wish my dress would come in already so I can *hopefully* remember how wonderful the dress is…

Aww, poor Thimble and Mom Thimble! Glad you ladies are okay, aside from some bruised confidence.

I think the dress highlights your, um, girls and if there’s any belly issues they will be invisible because of that ;)

it still looks great and it’s probably the length that is probably throwing everything off, but you definitely want to be happy in the dress that you ultimately wear!

You look beautiful. I love this dress on you! I think we all have dress doubt, we’re all our own harshest critics!

I can’t wait to hear the rest of the story!!!

I meant to mention too, that it’s good to keep in mind that it’s unaltered. I kinda secretly am not in love with my dress right now because it’s two sizes too big and, like you, it’s like a foot too long (the pictures of me in it scare me). I just have to remember that I LOVED it when my mom was pulling and tucking it to fit. I also LOVE the pictures of it hanging on the hanger at my parents, so I just have to remember how wonderful it will look when it fits PERFECTLY! Did you try it with a veil? That helped complete the look for me!

I LOVED this dress when I tried it on… and I LOVE it on you all over again! I do have to agree with the other ladies…. Keep in mind that it is unaltered!!!
I found my dress later that day at David’s Bridal and bought it on the spot… only to have second thoughts for MONTHS about the dress. I even went to various other stores to try to find a better dress but couldn’t see spending the money on a new gown. I wasn’t pleased with dress at all…. that is, until yesterday when it was finished being altered and it fit like a glove. I’m in LOVE with it all over again!

Girlfriend, I’ve had 4 dresses!

The first three I purchased at David’s Bridal - their return policy demands that you don’t get your money back or exchange it for another one of their dresses. I second guessed every dress I had from that store.

I saw my dream dress on Style Me Pretty, and searched the world over to find it. I eventually did, and am IN LOVE. (http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/i-have-my-dress-wedding-next-week)

Not to worry, I think a lot of brides go through this. I would advise anyone to look online extensively before buying something.

BUT your dress is actually quite stunning.

You are so pretty! I hope your mom didn’t get injured from her slip. Slippery socks are no fun. :(

I can see what you mean about it accentuates something that’s barely there. I’m sure I would have had the same problem with the dress. But your chest looks fantastic in it!
