Ms Seahorse's Picture
Ms Seahorse, Boston Age and Occupation: 25, Veterinary Jane-of-all-trades Fiancee's Age and Occupation: 36, former non-profit fundraiser in search of something better Engagement Date: October 17, 2009 Wedding Date: September 2010 Venue: Fort Pond Lodge About Me: By day I'm a cat-wrangler, vet tech assistant, pet-sitter, receptionist, and pre-vet student, but the rest of the time, I'm a former-roller-derby girl turned dedicated-wedding planner. I love reading, writing, bicycles, animals, roller skating, and antique-y things of all sorts. I'm a vegetarian who likes spicy foods, while Fiancee Seahorse is a meat eater who does not like spices. We live outside Boston with our menagerie: a fifty pound dog, a one-eyed, seventeen-toed, toothless cat, and a perfectly put together cat who has a penchant for pooping near rather than in her litter box. In addition to planning our small lake-side wedding, we enjoy running around with the puppy, playing board games (Scrabble, anyone?), having little adventures, talking about how we should really clean the house more, and maintaining our little garden of vegetables and wedding flowers.

Style Me Struggling

June 8th, 2010 @ 9:20 am by Ms Seahorse

If you know me well – and perhaps if you’ve been following my posts at all – you know that I have a sort of ridiculous amount of trouble getting dressed in a very basic way. I am well known by my fiancee and college roommate for wearing my famous “I can’t figure out what to wear today” outfit: starting from the bottom and moving up, we have slippers, socks, underwear (that’s right, no pants), and my college sweatshirt. Depending on how cold it is, I might also be wearing a hat. It’s sort of like this picture, minus the sunglasses, and in just socks, slippers, and underwear. To be completely honest, it’s usually just one sock. I’m not sure why.

Also, I’m usually not in a car during this process.

Sometimes I think I have spent so long working in the veterinary field because I know what I’m wearing every single day: scrubs. They are comfortable, they are interchangeable and all match each other, and they require no thinking whatsoever when getting up in the morning beyond, “Is this clean enough to wear?” Yes, I just admitted that to the general public.

Me in comfy clothes hard at work; the one-eyed wonder is clearly helping

When we were little, my sister and I were polar opposites when it came to clothes. I’m really, really sorry I don’t have pictures to illustrate my point, but here it is: While my sister spent a good couple of months (at least!) insisting on wearing her pink headband and her pink necklace and frilly dress or other nice-looking clothes, I wanted something that was comfortable, and I would happily wear it every single day until my mother made me wear something new. I didn’t care how it looked, as long as I felt good. My sister, on the other hand, wanted earrings so badly that she wore the clip-ons until her ears turned red (my mom finally decided that if she wanted them badly enough to put up with that pain all day, she could probably handle actual piercings). In retrospect, my attachment to comfort rather than style, and my pleasure in wearing the same thing until it was taken away, probably factored into my not being one of the popular girls.

Now that I’m all grown up… not much has changed. I still don’t want to wear anything uncomfortable – at all. I find a pair of shoes that fits and those are the shoes I will wear until they are dead. I don’t do well with heels, no matter how pretty they are.

The problem is, I have no idea what my sense of style is. Sometimes I feel attractive and confident – but it’s often in completely different kinds of clothes, and I can’t find a pattern, and I have no idea what I want to wear. Case in point: Today we went to a consignment shop and I bought a very pretty dress. It looked lovely on me, and I know I’ll wear it a lot. It is kind of like this one:

See? I can look nice in a dress!

Now, in the exact same shopping trip, I bought pants and a shirt from the guys’ section. And I look and feel totally hot in them, if I do say so myself.

Here is a picture of me dressed in my (male) friend’s clothes, feeling totally attractive (though I realize I didn’t look as good as I felt – and also this was about 5 years ago):

Dressed as my awesome roommate for a costume party in all his clothes - convincingly, if I may say so.

I am perplexed. How is it that I love feeling dykey in my boy’s jeans and polo shirt AND I love feeling pretty in my dress?

I mean, yes, I know that this is totally allowed, but I have no idea where to start looking for something to wear when it’s time to dress up: a button down shirt? A dress? A button down dress? I can’t figure out what I’m entirely comfortable it – sometimes it’s the dress, sometimes it’s the pants.

And don’t get me started on shoes (because I will, soon, don’t you worry). If I can wear Chacos with it, I’m happy, and if I can’t, then I am lost. As one of my friends recently pointed out, “Just because we’re girls doesn’t mean we can’t fail at footwear. Shoes are hard!”

Does anyone else have this complete fashion struggle? This is why I am wearing a suit and a dress at my wedding. How do you know what your “style” is? How many of you spend a good chunk of time in your socks, slippers, and underwear throwing various clothes around the room? What is the key to looking good and feeling comfortable, if it is even possible?

Its ok Miss Seahorse, I have no style either. My 3 teenage sisters are all the same size and share a wardrobe full of coordinating stylish clothes. Even my 6 week old baby sister has better style than me in her cute baby clothes! I generally throw on whatever is comfortable and doesn’t look totally terrible. I don’t have enough money to keep buying ‘trendy’ clothes, and working as a nanny I get snot and the like on my clothes daily, so cheap plain clothes suit me just fine.

I wish I could hire a personal shopper and have an endless budget for clothes.

The one sock deal gets me every time… every time! I love that’s what you rock to be comfy cozy!
I don’t think there really is a black and white definition of how to look/feel comfy. I love dressing up in a tailored button down and pencil skirt, it makes me feel confident. And because I’m confident, I am comfortable, in the clothes and with myself, and therefore I think exude it. But I’m also the girl that you will find in running shorts and a mens white t-shirt, and I feel great in that too. As long as whatever you’re wearing makes you feel good (comfortable, sexy, confident, cute, hot, WHATEVER) I think other people see that in you. Who cares if your “style” doesn’t fit into a little box and never changes… that’s called versatility, my friend, not lack of style. :)

I think everyone’s style is their own, even if they aren’t sure what that is! I have a hard time finding things that I like that aren’t expensive until I stumbled upon the wonderful world of accessories. Most days you can find me in a pair of gladiator sandals, boy-ish jeans and a solid t-shirt. However on top of that you will find several chain necklaces, sometimes a fedora, bangles, anything shiny and noisy! They take boring to fabulous with literally no effort whatsoever.

And I think you look fabulous in that dress!

I love that dress, it’s super-cute! I think style is all about feeling confident and good about yourself in the clothes you’re wearing…

I may get a little performance studies grad student-y here, but I think we all perform different versions of ourselves all the time (I have Fashionista Snow, Grad Student Snow, Teacher Snow, Slumming-It Snow, etc., etc.) and clothes function as a kind of costume that expresses that performance of self.

I feel less stressed when I embrace the fact that at any given time, a dress is more me than sweats and vice versa, and these different identities don’t mean I’m not being true to myself. I kinda think that all those different versions of myself is what makes me who I am… So rock the dress and the suit! They’re both part of what make you awesome.

(And Mr. Snow wanders around with one sock on ALL THE TIME! He will be so happy to hear that he has a uni-sock comrade out there!)

Girl! I’m totally more comfort than cute. I love being able to wear flannel/plaid pj pants and t-shirt (if cold, a hoodie. I LOVE hoodies)! I could wear that 24/7! If going out, it’s usually jeans and a college t-shirt I got free from various clubs or hand outs. Sad, I know! My work clothes consists of black slacks and various shades of blue button down shirts. I envy girls that dress up in pretty things, but I don’t have a clue about fashion and am intimidated by some of the styles! I love that you get to wear scrubs to work! I’ve always wanted a scrub wearing job!

Looking through your blog pics, you seem drawn to bright colors and fitted but not tight clothing. Maybe your style is less defined by gender, and more defined by color and fit? I’d suggest looking for other “types” of patterns in the clothes you love.

I have this struggle wear I love JCrew type stuff but also want to look like some cool indie rock person and my FI wears things like tight red jeans and motorhead shirts which I think just looks silly next to my capris, flats and gray cardigan. So yes I understand completely and have like two separate people’s closets in one.

I suck at style, so I feel your pain. Your dress is so cute, though!

Lol, oh my gosh, the first part of your post about getting dressed in the morning and wearing the socks outfit actually made me laugh out loud at my desk!
I have similar troubles. Getting dressed is hard! And I have a ’style,’ but it doesn’t help, as stylish clothes are rarely warm/comfortable/low maintenance. On the weekend I often end up in public just wearing leggings. One of my friends always wears a tracksuit and runners and says people excuse it because they think she must be on her way to the gym.
One thing I try to do is just wear a dress as it is a complete outfit in its own right - then you just add shoes, and a cardi if it’s cold. Trying to put together an outfit, with pants/skirt/top/jumper/cardigan/jacket is where it gets way too complicated.

I have no style either, and approaching 30 in less than a month…I feel as I should know how to dress like a “grown up” at this point in my life, but still do not know how to do so. Maybe b/c I’ve never had a “real” job? Who knows…it’s at the same time frusterating, and comforting ?
