Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.
About Mrs. Knitting

I love looking for wedding inspiration on the Internet. Unfortunately, a lot of the details I’ve fallen completely in love with (serving raspberry mint lemonade in mason jars) aren’t really suitable for a winter wedding. However, because I’m currently so in love with these summery drinks we will take a slight detour from the theme of this post to drool over these photos…

Gorgeous right? Anyway, newfound lemonade obsession aside, I’m always thrilled when I come across some really lovely winter wedding inspiration. So for all you other winter brides out there, I’ve provided a link to the first blog entry I came across that made me really really excited about having a winter wedding.

Staying Warm at Winter Weddings by Beth Helmstetter

Basically her top five tips are (these are highly paraphrased):

  1. Greeting guest with a hot drink
  2. Having candles everywhere
  3. Have a fireplace
  4. Winter themed favours
  5. Having a hot chocolate bar

I think I’m likely to include at least three of these ideas. You’ll have to stay tuned to find out which ones…

Anyway, while I was particularly inspired by this post, I love pretty much everything Beth Helmstetter does and I love reading her blog. Just for fun here’s a few more of my favourite Beth Helmstetter posts.

What are your favourite winter wedding tips?

I’m keeping my wedding bare… by bare I mean light on flower heavy on branches!! I want a very wintery feel.. Lots of white.. light blue.. and silver. FauxIce is screaming my name. Although I dont want snowflakes all over the place.

I’m also doing blue uplighting.

oh one more thing. A winter bride on another board requested that her venue add blue food coloring to the champagne for the toast!

Oh what a wonderful idea! You can do a lot of fun stuff with creative drink stations.

- Hot chocolate (with marshmellow, chocolate shavings, or candy cane garnishment)
- Hot apple cider (maybe one that’s been spiked for the adults? Cinnamon stick garmnishment)
- Hot buttered rum
- Coffee bar (maybe an Irish Coffee bar?)
- Hot tea

Have fun with it! I can’t wait to see what you’ve come up with <3

I have an idea! I made a spiked lemonade with ginger beer for our staff holiday party. It was a huge hit. Ginger is winter…? so you can get your lemonade fix :)

We’re doing hot cider if it’s cold- but early October is difficult to judge. It’ll be a last min decision. We’re def doing s’mores though.

We originally had lemonade and tropical iced tea in our catering contract–until I realized this week how little sense that made for our winter wedding. I still wanted cold non-alcoholic beverages, so we’re having bottles of coke and Jones soda. We aren’t doing warm beverages other than coffee, but here in Seattle, I’m not too worried about it being all that cold. We will have hard apple cider as a winter touch.

We’re doing the low light feel with candles everywhere, bridesmaids carrying lanterns instead of boquets, and lots of sparkle!

OMG the Hot Chocolate Bar sounds amazing! At Thanksgiving I always make hot cider, which just means taking jars of apple cider and heating them with slices of orange that have cloves pushed inside. I saw this on the Food Network back in the mid-90s (before it was cool) and have done it ever since. It’s yummy and wintery and maybe you could even put that in mason jars!

Don’t forget the warm apple cider! I guess that’s a fall thing but nobody said you can’t vary it up and toss it in there too!

How lovely! We wanted to do the lemonade “stand” like in your pictures for our outdoor July ceremony. However, our venue, which has the exclusive food/beverage rights, can only provide bottled water and canned lemonade. For $2.50 each. Well, that just took the vintage romance right out of that idea.

@misschristinec@hotmail.com Those colours will be lovely! My Christmas tree is covered in blue and silver
@kindge_03 I’ve never had hot buttered rum, but it sounds amazing
@sapphirebride I’m also a huge candlelight fan!
@supergeek That sounds so delicious.
@tritaratops Haha not too much vintage romance in canned lemonade! Lemonade stand would be awesome though.

Oooooh what is it about drink dispensers full of lemonade that just fill me with happiness?! Must be that happy summer feel you speak of.
I totally added one of those to our registry… for all those summer parties we’re going to have after we’re married :)

We’re doing a hot chocolate bar at our wedding, with little jars of hot chocolate for favors :) Unfortunately, our venue is a strictly “no candles” kinda place, but that’s okay. We’re using vellum and led candles to make it warm and cheery!!
