About Mrs. Starfish

The Ring

June 9th, 2010 @ 11:42 am by Mrs. Starfish

Mr. Starfish and I had talked about marriage numerous times before he proposed. He had given me a promise ring during our first year of dating, during college. We both knew we would get married, but wanted to finish college and start our careers first.

Mr. Starfish wanted to pick the ring out on his own. He tends to pick things out I would never buy for myself and end up loving. I actually like his taste in clothes and jewelry for me better than my own… 99% of the time. My favorite coat and earrings were Christmas gifts from him, and my favorite dress was a birthday gift. So when it came time to choose a ring, I knew he’d find something gorgeous.

That’s not to say I never showed him any rings I liked. If I had a magazine in front of me, I’d show him something I liked. I tended to show him halo rings. I noticed a pattern after a while, and so I was surprised when he proposed with something completely different from anything I had shown him.

FMIL and FFIL Starfish gave Mr. Starfish the ring his father proposed to his mother with over thirty years ago. Mr. Starfish was extremely grateful, but wanted to pick out something, so he decided he would use the center stone and choose a different setting.

The center stone is the original diamond, which is a circle solitaire, with 4 smaller diamonds on either side, an engraved design on either side of the band and tiny diamonds underneath each side of the main stone. It has a vintage look. I hadn’t looked at anything like it, but when he proposed with it, I knew it was my perfect ring.

And you can tell how much I love it by our little photo shoot that weekend…

I worked at a jewelry store while in University so my Fiance definitely knew i was yellow gold and Solitaire all the way! I had tried on every style, size and cut imaginable and still loved the classic round cut! Lets just say he did VERY good!!

I picked out my ring. He proposed, then we went to the jewelry store. From about the time we started talking about getting married, I reiterated (numerous times) that I wanted to pick out my own ring. Yeah, I’m a romance/surprise killer.

FI proposed with his maternal grandmother’s e- ring. We also took the diamond out of the setting, and placed it into a vintage style band. We picked out the setting together. I am thinking of using grandma’s setting, and having FI place a blue stone into it. I am thinking ahead to have my something old, something new, and something blue all in one. I just need to borrow something, and I will be all set.

Haha, I pretty much knew exactly what my ring would look like before Daniel got it for me. We started roaming jewelry stores at least a year before we got engaged. Daniel not only knew I loved sapphires, but that I loved deeply colored ones, wanted a white-gold band, didn’t want anything too big, and liked three stone rings. I figured he’d get me a ring with a sapphire accompanied by small diamonds on each side. He actually switched it up on me and got me a smallish diamond accompanied by two slightly smaller sapphires which I think I love even more than the vision in my head. He is also good at picking things out for me…with a little help.

@nicoliolihpf: GOSH the ring you thought you would get is exactly what i got for my engagement ring…. I am a fan of white gold and well i hinted on that but the rest was all him…. and the best part is i get to lock it with two yellow gold bands with tiny diamonds… i got the bands this week and lets just i have been “practice” wearing them for the last two nights when going to bed …. sweet!!!

My sweetie asked what kind of metal and stone I wanted, and I said white metal with diamond, and he did the rest. Like you, I love my boo’s taste, and he picked out something more gorgeous than I ever could have myself!
