Who Are You?

June 9th, 2010 @ 4:42 pm by Mrs. Sewing

Mr. Sew, as you may have noticed, can’t see. He needs glasses, and strong ones. Though he has contacts, he just doesn’t look like himself without the rims. So naturally, he decided it would be best for him to wear them on our wedding day.

However, there was a problem (isn’t there always?). His glasses have transition lenses, meaning they change into dark sunglasses when hit with UV rays.

I’m pretty sure I want to be able to look my future husband in the eye when he says his vows to me. No rock star indoor sunglasses, please!

The solution was simple - have Mr. Sew get some new glasses without transition lenses. He was due for an appointment anyway.

But somehow it didn’t turn out quite like I had pictured.

Who is this man in trendy square glasses, and what happened to Mr. Sew?

We went through every pair of glasses they had in the store. None of them looked like his old glasses. In fact, there were hardly any round rims at all! Most were squared or partially squared, so maybe that’s the style now? Frustrated by not finding any matches, he decided he was just going to go in a completely new direction.

Completely new. He likes them, and they look good on him, I admit. But something kind of bothers me. I know I’ll get used to them eventually, but being brand new and all - I’m pretty perturbed by the “huge change”. I don’t want to look at all our photos and only notice his un-Sew-looking glasses.

Amazing fiance working hard our wedding music? Nope! Glasses, glasses, glasses!

Hopefully they will be more familiar to me in the coming month. Mr. Sew promised he’d bring his old glasses to Hawaii just to ease my mind, though it seems silly to flip out over something so trivial. Obviously the glasses he wears does not change the person he is. But at the same time, glasses play a big part in characterizing Mr. Sew, and I’ve always seen him in round, silver glasses. Think of it as the equivalent of dying your hair blond when it’s normally black - it’s a big change!

Anyone else undergo a big change right before the wedding? A dye job, perm, new tattoo or a fancy pair of specs?

Too funny! I’m sure you’ll get used to them in time.
My Dad also had transition lenses so we had to get him new specs for the wedding too!

my fiance just got new glasses about 3 weeks ago, and we’re getting married in 2.5 weeks (!!). he’s worn the same pair for the last 7 years, and the entire time i’ve known him except for about 2 weeks right at the start. his old glasses look just like Mr. Sew’s old ones, only his were black. his new ones are square but the bottom is rimless. when we first picked them out i thought they looked great on him - and he wanted a totally new look too, not just another of the same - in fact i told him he would be too stylish for me! i was pretty worried that he would look weird to me on our wedding day, and that i would look at the pics and think who is this new guy. surprisingly i got used to them in just about 1 week, even though i didn’t realize it. i was still worried, and asked him to put his old ones on. they looked horrible next to his new ones!! so now i’m actually really glad he has the new ones. i think you’ll have plenty of time to get used to Mr. Sew’s new ones :D

When my fiancee got new glasses it took me about 2 weeks to get used to them. I love them now! His old ones look strange to me whenever he puts them on.

I think his new glasses look cool.
But if you’re dying for the round silver ones, there are a few websites where you can order super cheap glasses (I’ve gotten pairs for as low as $7 total - for frames and lenses!). Feel free to message me if you want the websites.

I totally understand this! It really freaks me out every time my fiance gets a new pair of glasses! Luckily he found some that he really likes, so hopefully he’ll stick with them for a while.

I like Mr. Sew’s new glasses, though! They look good - it’ll just take some time to adjust!

ha, this post reminds me of mr.v and me. except i’m the glasses wearer. actually, we both wear glasses, but i’m the one that gets the funkier ones - case in point, the ones on my face right now are thick, red, plastic rims. :) but for the wedding i want to get something much more understated and not so look-at-me-i’m-wearing-super-hip-glasses! the thing is, i’ve always worn bold glasses and mr.v says he doesn’t want it any other way on our wedding day. he says he likes my glasses and how i express myself through them. but i don’t want my glasses to be the focal point on that day. i mean c’mon, i’ll be wearing a fantastic wedding dress - it musn’t have any other competition! lol. anyway, i went off an a tangent, but i totally understand the whole wedding-day-glasses-change thing. oh, and btw, i’m digging the new mr.sew glasses. :)

My husband made the switch from rounder silvery frames to brown, mostly frameless, rectangular ones. It did take a few days to get used to, but I really like them now.

I think Mr. Sewing’s rectangular specs look really nice on him. Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it.

I like them!

When I met my fiance he wore contacts every day. Then last year he switched to glasses for about 6 months, and everyone at his summer job associated him with thick rim glasses. When he went back to contacts they couldn’t recognize him!

new glasses usually take a bit of time getting used to, but if it’s any help at all i think the new ones look pretty great. i’m sure you’ll feel the same way in no time!

The new ones look great! I definitely think the square frames are more in style now than the round ones. And it will e great to see his eyes during the ceremony!

You could just have him put new lenses in his old frames? It won’t cost that much for a new set of lenses - under $200 usually.

I once heard something about how you will always like your significant other best as you first met (and fell in love with) him/her…like if he had a beard you will forever prefer him with a beard. I totally think it is true, and the same thing goes for Mr. Sew’s style of glasses! You will probably always prefer the old style, but I’m sure you’ll come to love the new style too.

Mr. Octo is about to shave the beard he’s been sporting for the past six months or so, and I know I’m going to be really weirded out by his naked baby face at first! I think you & I will both get used to our respective fiance’s changes, though. Plus, I REALLY like Mr. Sew’s new glasses!

Haha, cute post! I think the new ones look great, but I agree glasses (especially when they are such a part of your identity) take a lot of getting used to!

My fiance has transition lenses as well and will have to get a new pair of glasses before we get married (or wear contacts). I’m personally kind of excited to see what he looks like in other styles. The more worrisome thing is that I wear glasses. I haven’t been able to wear contacts since I was 15 when I had an eye surgery that left scar tissue on my eyes. I haven’t even bothered trying in the last 7 years or so…but now that I’m thinking about getting married, the idea of wearing my glasses is less than ideal. At the very least I will have to get a new pair (I don’t think that black and pink will quite do it) although I’d like to go with contacts for the event. However, I still want to look like me. I can definitely understand about glasses being an integral part of someone’s identity…especially if you’re super blind like me and no one ever sees you without them. On a side note though, I love Mr. Sew’s new glasses. They look great on him. Hopefully you can come to love them yourself…otherwise I would suggest having new lenses (that don’t change colors) put in the old frames.

I really like Mr. Sew’s new specs, but I understand the not looking like himself feeling you might be getting. I do the same thing with every new pair of glasses I get, but after a little time I am glad I change styles.
