Really Gorgeous Wedding Bands

June 9th, 2010 @ 10:40 am by Mrs. Octopus

One of the most common questions people ask about my engagement ring is, “what kind of wedding band can you wear with that?”

Uh, good question. As you can see in these two pictures, the “basket” that holds my ring’s center stone is really big, and set really far off from the band itself.

This means that my engagement ring does not fit with a regular wedding band at all. I’ve tried it on with a few wedding bands, and there is a significant, noticeable gap between them. I know some people are fine with this, but my compulsive self totes cannot handle the non-matchiness. In order to get the “flush-fitted” look I like, though, I would need a custom wedding band with a significant notch in it to match up against the basket of my e-ring.

Problem? I’m not really a fan of the way wedding bands with a deep inset in them look either. I’d like a wedding band that looks “complete” by itself. But I can’t have that and wear it with my engagement ring. What to do??

NEVER FEAR! I’ve come up with a tentative, slightly unconventional plan for what to do about my engagement and wedding rings. I think I’m going to switch my engagement ring to be worn on my right ring finger, and wear a wedding band alone on my left ring finger. A little different from the norm, yes, but I kind of like the idea of having a symbol of my marriage to Mr. Octopus on both hands. I also like this option because, for whatever reason, the wedding bands I’m drawn to are quite a different style than my engagement ring, and I think they’d look better separate than together. Want to see?

I’ve been casually window-shopping for wedding bands for a while now, and rings with a floral, filigree, or scroll pattern have regularly caught my eye the most. At first, I was looking for a solid ring with an engraved pattern, like these:

But then I found some photos where the rings themselves were crafted into a floral or decorative pattern, and it was game over. So delicate! So feminine! MUST HAAAAAVE!!! Take a look:

I love this look. LOVE! I’m especially excited because Mom and Dad Octopus gave me a slammin’ graduation present last month: a gift certificate to a great local jeweler in my hometown, so I can custom-design the perfect wedding band. Isn’t that such an awesome gift?? Mom Octopus knew I had been worried about where and how I’d get an affordable ring I loved, and totally came through with a great idea. I don’t think I’ll have the budget to have a really diamond-y wedding band like a few of the examples above, but hopefully I can find the room for a few little sparkles here and there. Can’t waaaaait. It will be the first (and, probably, only) time I’ll have the opportunity to design a custom piece of jewelry! I’m so excited to go in and see what the jewelers can do with my ideas.

How did you choose the style of your wedding band? If you have a difficult-to-fit engagement ring, what did you decide to do about your wedding band?

ooh lovely choices! I also have an e-ring that doesn’t let a wedding band sit exaaactly flush against it, but I’m okay with a little gap. We’re going to get it custom designed as well so we get exactly what we want :)

Those filigree rings are so pretty!

My e-ring had tons of details/little diamonds on each side, too, so any wedding band would have covered that up and looked odd. Like you, I decided to just switch e-ring to my right hand after the wedding. Some people think it’s odd, but they also freaked out because I had a ruby in my e-ring and not just diamonds. Ahhh, a coloured stone! What can it possibly mean?!

I’m switching mine to my right hand, too! My e-ring also has a large “basket” where my stone is set. Plus, we got custom bands, and it really just looks fabulous by itself. Don’t want it to get overshadowed since it is beautiful in its own right!

My ring is a crazy shape too. I couldn’t bear to wear my E-ring on my other hand so I wear my engagement ring on the laft and my wedding ring on the right.

That’s exactly what I did!! Because of my engagement ring’s design, there was a huuuge gap between it and the band that I wasn’t crazy about. I also wanted a band that would be able to stand on it’s own (no notch). So I’m wearing the e-ring on my right and band on my left. Yup.

I love that 2nd set of bands you’re considering (floral/delicate) - so pretty!

I love the inspiration for your wedding band! I wear my e-ring on my right hand and wedding ring on the left. I ended up with 2 different rings because I wanted my wedding ring to reflect where we got hitched (Hawaii) and the 2 just don’t go together. I love to look down and see both rings on each hand. :)

Love the e-ring and love your style in wedding bands! We had to do the separate hands thing too, but I’m keeping the e-ring on my left and wedding band on my right instead….I’m right handed and I know I’d bonk the hell out of my e-ring–not cool. Plus my right hand ring finger is slightly bigger–strange, I know!

I have a custom engagement ring that is in sort of a swirl/wave pattern. My fiance had a band made with it too that matches its curves exactly, but like you, I don’t really like how the “matched” band looks. Instead, we bought something different and I’ll wear my e-ring on the right. Though, they’re sort of complementary so I might decide to wear them together…

I’m doing the exact same thing you are (kinda scary, actually).
My fingers are really small (3.75 ring size) and having my engagement ring and a wedding band together look overwhelming. I’m going to switch my engagement ring to my right hand and wear a custom-made band on my left.
Scary part is, my custom-made band is an antique, filigree patern with openwork and looks a lot like the ones you showed. The only difference is that I’m going to have the pattern flanked by eternity bands.
Most people think I’m weird that I am only wearing my wedidng band on my right hand and not my engagement ring, but my FI and I love the idea.

First of all, I think all of those are beautiful choices. Secondly, I like your creative solution to the “problem” of your huge stunning engagement ring. Lastly, I’ve been looking everywhere for the perfect wedding band and I think you found it for me! Where did you find the middle one in the first set of the 3 rings you showed? (the floral, filigree, or scroll pattern ones) My engagement ring is antique and it would go so beautifully with it!

Mine was difficult to figure out because it had such a low setting. We had one custom made, and it ended up being less expensive than all of the others we saw!

I had the EXACT same thoughts as you. :-) I ended up with a band that sits flush against my ering, but the curved part is so thin, you can’t see it. As a wedding gift, my husband got me a plain separate band to wear on its own. Best of both worlds.

My ering and matching band have the cut-out designs in your last two inspiration pics, and….this is kind of gross….but the holes get clogged with….I guess skin bits? So if you haven’t chosen yet…might I suggest to look at the filled-in ones like the first bands you liked. I clean my rings a lot, but I can’t get the dirt out. Yuk. (I still love them though - I just don’t ever let anyone see them up close.)

That’s exactly what I did and I love just having my band on my left hand and e-ring on my right :) Yay!

My engagement ring is a filigree heirloom that doesn’t match our wedding bands at all… I hadn’t thought about switching fingers for one or the other…. Great idea girls!

@Jennifer: Your’s is probably filling with soap scum along with dead skin bits (like you said). My celtic puzzle ring does that all the time. Jewelry cleaner out to get that out. Or really warm water with one of those tiny brushes you get when you have braces. But agree about the ease of a filled in ring. =)

Those rings are gorgeous, I think I’ll be spending a lot of time on the Fay Cullen website… swoon!
