About Mrs. Scissors

The Big Ones

June 9th, 2010 @ 12:06 pm by Mrs. Scissors

On Sunday night, Mr. Scissors and I had a massive dance-party with ourselves and the kitten––we finalized our choices for “the big ones”, as I like to call ‘em. I thought I’d share ‘em with you all, as well as our runners up, just because we had so much fun doing this. Also, way to put this off until the last minute, us. What can I say? Music was super important to us, so choosing it seemed virtually impossible—we didn’t want to cut any of our favorites!

First up, is the song for the bridal party intro. This… well… I lied. This we haven’t decided on. There are two options. One is the cover of “With a Little Help from My Friends” by Jim Sturgess and Joe Anderson from Across the Universe.

Our other option for this is “Time Warp”.

The first of our choices seems like the more appropriate song for this, but Mr. Scissors and I originally wanted us all to enter doing “Time Warp”. As we’re less than two weeks out, there’s no way we could figure out a dance number for that. We also would be able to save it and boogie down to it later in the evening. We’ll see!

Next up is our entrance song. Remember how we didn’t want to use “Obsessed with You” by The Orion Experience for our first dance because of the whole sex thing, even though it is “our song”? Bah. We’re going to use it anyway!

After that is our first dance, which I’ve already revealed to be “Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy” by Queen.

Awkwardly bounce around, awkwardly bounce around, then it’s time for the father/daughter dance. During this dance, I will cry like a baby. Boo-hoo. Ugly cry face. Sob. It’s Loudon Wainwright III’s “Daughter”. A fairly popular choice as far as father/daughter dances go, but only because of it’s amazing and appropriateness. If you haven’t heard it––seriously. Play this. Cry. Hug your daddy.

After my daddy and I dance, Mr. Scissors and his mama will take to the dance floor to the Scissor Sisters’ (!!!!) “Take Your Mama Out”. They had a hard time figuring out a song to use. Mr. Scissors’ mom is nervous about dancing, so I suggested that they do a fun song and then we’d get everybody to start dancing halfway through. They loved the song, loved the idea, so sold!

We’ll dance for a good while, and then it will be time for the toss-time! For the bouquet toss, we chose “Another One Bites the Dust” by Queen for clear awesomeness, Queen-action, and, well, it’s just hilariously perfect. I wish I could get some of our friends to promise to dive on the floor, but I doubt that’ll fly.

The garter toss was both a hard and easy decision. We had two that we wrestled with — “Short Skirt Long Jacket” by Cake and “La Grange” by ZZ Top. Ultimately, ZZ won out because, well, it’s ZZ Top, and we’re in LG. (Ok, LaGrange, GA, not La Grange, TX. Close enough, right?)

The last song before our faux grand exit [More on that later, but basically we’re going around the block at 10:00 pm, then coming back to the house for more dance-party] will be “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers. IMHO, this is the perfect last dance song. It’s a well-known song, fun to dance, and has great wordies. Win all around.

There you have it! Our “big ones”. I hope this has given ideas to those still trying to decide on their “big ones”!

What are your “big ones”? Any overlaps with ours?

Also, which should we choose for the bridal party intro– “With a Little Help from My Friends” or “Time Warp

We didn’t have to pick nearly so many songs since we skipped all the special dances besides our first dance and we didn’t do bouquet or garter tosses. But our last dance had to be “I’ve Had The Time of My Life” because that’s always the last song at my FI’s house parties. The DJ played that one with an old roommate singing it on the microphone and then the DJ lovingly played “All I Want Is You” by U2 which I adored. Perfect, perfect, perfect way to end the perfect night.

I’m such a music loser. I don’t know the titles, who it’s by, nothing!! The only songs I recognized and ever heard before were from Queen. I do know of ZZ Top but I don’t know their music off the top of my head. :( Your selections sound like a lot of fun!!

Awesome choices!

We chose three of our “big ones” already…

First Dance: This Years Love by David Gray

Father/Daughter: Little Miss Magic by Jimmy Buffett (my dad is a huge Jimmy Buffett fan and the song is perfect for us)

Mother/Son: Lullabye (Goodnight, My Angel) by Billy Joel

You know, I was totally against doing a bouquet toss until your “Another One Bites the Dust” idea. Now I have to go evaluate how many single women will actually be attending our wedding, as we’re one of the last couples in our group of friends to get married.

I just have to say woohoo for the LaGrange, TX shoutout. :) Seriously, it’s a tiny town that’s probably never been mentioned on the internet. I think these are fab song choices. I can’t wait for your recaps! (I know, I know…first the wedding.)

My fiance and his mom are also dancing to Scissor Sisters - Take your Mama! We have always been big fans of this song and his mom agreed when we played it for her! Yeah for fun songs : )

oh and i voted for “a little help” only because i think saving time warp for later on would be awsome with a dance floor full!

We haven’t finalized it all but I will tell you what is set in stone:

Introduction Dance: Tonight’s Gonna be a Good night by the Black Eyed Peas

Our First Dance: Have I told you lately that I love you (VERY cliche but it is his grandmother’s favorite song so we are doing it for her as well AND because it means something to us - long store - AND because we’re putting a twist by doing it in english AND in spanish for his side of the family)

My father daughter dance - I loved her first by heartland

His mother son dance - Men in my Life by anita Baker

Last Dance is a toss up btwn I’ve had the time of my life and Donna Summers, Last Dance.

Still deciding on the rest of it…….
