Mrs. Thimble's Picture
Mrs. Thimble, NYC/Philadelphia Age and Occupation: 26, Actress & Costume Designer (+ day job) Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Lawyer & Techie Wiz Engagement Date: August 22, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2010 Venue: The Pearl S. Buck House About Me: I’m an easily inspired over-thinker delighted with the process of designing, building, directing and {dare I say} co-starring in the early-autumn affair I’ve been dreaming up. I’m a sucker for trendied-up comfort foods and old family anecdotes; I have an affinity for adjectives, alliteration, eyelet and earl grey; and I live for quality time with family and friends. I never guessed I’d marry my “high school sweetheart", but when it turned out to be my funny, techie, loyal Mr. Thimble I was committed for life. We’re both mid-career transition and ready to move back to small-townish TBD, PA in a pre-wedding flurry of all-good life changes.
About Mrs. Thimble

I did indeed DIY these cards, but I should warn in true Thimble fashion that this post is nowhere near a legit tutorial. I stumbled my way through these big time. I never opened a book about Adobe Illustrator (but I promise I have since); I just got myself (Mr. T got me) a free trial and I went at it. What came out in the end?

Ta da!!

What I made in Illustrator:

The Ask: DIY Bridesmaids' Cards : wedding bridesmaid gift philadelphia Marniem1 marnieM

Finished product {featuring bling pear necklace ’cause it matched}:

The Ask: DIY Bridesmaids' Cards : wedding bridesmaid gift philadelphia Bcard1 bcard

The Ask: DIY Bridesmaids' Cards : wedding bridesmaid gift philadelphia 3cards1 3cards

{personal photos}

What was my super well thought out trial and error process, you ask?

  • Brainstorm a list of inside jokes and special memories you have with all your girls individually.
  • Look at some inspiration stationery—if you’re like me you have some invitation suites you’ve been drooling over and you can’t pick which one so you do some of both:

{Thoughtful Day, Hello Lucky}

  • Find some fonts you like (and more inspiration) on sites like dafont and my fonts.
  • Open your Illustrator free trial and acquaint yourself with selection tools and text boxes.
  • I made a “word cloud” by putting each inside joke idea in its own text box, sizing the font and the box differently, and moving them around until I was satisfied with the mosaic.
  • Come up with a completely unnecessary sales slogan to convince the girls to “join the party”.
  • Go to Michaels craft store and buy a pack of card stock that includes several of your wedding colors. {Note: I tried to link to what I bought but I can’t find just a pack of paper on their wackadoo website.}
  • Play with font colors and print on several different colors of cardstock until something is readable and pretty enough.
  • Cut the cards down if you used 8 1/2″ by 11″ paper.
  • Use a corner-rounder punch on the corners.
  • Raid your mom’s craft closet for suitable ribbon or trim when you’re home for the holidays
  • Hot glue together a tailored looking ribbon in 3 pieces. (I was going for the ribbon on Melissa Sweet’s Fern dress as I’m still slightlysecretly obsessed.)

And there you have it! I hope I have inspired other folks to just go for it regardless of whether you have any experience (haha, right). In “graphic design” or otherwise. (The inappropriate use of quotes is because I’m no graphic designer.)

How did you ask your bridesmaids to “join the party”? (Confession: I asked them all in person or over the phone. The official cards came later.)

ok so this post brings up a great question that I’d like to put out to the hive. What is the best way to ask your bridesmaids to be, well, maids? Card, phone, only in person, a combination?

thimble, these are too cute and I love the fact that you incorporated inside jokes. It makes each invite so personalized and special.

@ktisthatbees: whatever works for you. the 3 times that i’ve been asked to be a bm, it’s been either in person or on the phone. it’s the intent that counts most

it’s things like this that make me regret the random/not special phone calls I made letting my girls know I expected them to be my maids (ha! I wasn’t even nice enough to ask!) Yours look great :)

@MOHmama: the bow is 3 pieces of ribbon- around the card, the loop(s), and the middle nugget- and I hot glued them together
@ktisthatbees: @Mrs. Cloud: my maids kinda thought I was nuts- and my MOH called me after she got hers worried she couldn’t live up to my expectations because she lives in LA. Maybe a story for another post! The phone is just fine in my book too. If they’re you’re best girls they’ll just be excited to be asked (I hope).

I asked them all in person. Once I saw all the cute bmaid-asking ideas on Weddingbee, I saved them all up and put them into the bridesmaid gifts!

@debbie: The font is called “Affair.” I just googled “Affair font” and it came up for me, and you can buy it on Veer.com =)
