A Furisode Episode!

June 10th, 2010 @ 12:46 pm by Mrs. Sewing

While I’m still trying to sort out the whole lack-of-cheongsam issue, I thought I’d take a moment to address another reception dress I’ve been dreaming about - the kimono.

Honestly, I had long given up hope of wearing a wedding kimono, due to the staggering expense. Mr. Sew’s parents were kind enough to send us some beautiful yukata instead, which we wore for our engagement photos.

(And again on our 6th dating anniversary at the Fanime Convention this year!)

However, it didn’t seem formal enough for a wedding, so I had resigned myself to being a 2-dress bride. Of course, that didn’t stop me from whining about my lack of dream kimono every chance I got. I’m such an embarrassment.

But as destiny would have it, I actually received an e-mail from a church friend/wedding guest of ours. A friend-guest that wanted to loan me her furisode. A fancy, red kimono. I about died.

My dream! So beautiful!

She brought it all over in a suitcase, and I must say - there’s a lot of parts to it.

The kimono slip? I think it’s called a juban.

Belts. Lots and lots of belts. And no clue as to what each one is for.

A beautiful golden obi!

And the brocade beauty herself, which Mr. Sew is trying desperately to hold up off the floor. It’s long!

No wonder one of her conditions was that I must have someone to dress me in it. We’ll need someone with fast hands, or else I might miss our entire reception trying to get dressed!

She also warned me that the furisode is technically meant for unmarried ladies, since the sleeves are long. I’m hoping none of Mr. Sew’s family notices, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. Some of them are quite traditional. Oh well. I’ll only have been married a few hours, surely it can’t be that bad?

Oh, and I can’t forget the shoes (geta)! Are these not the cutest?!

I’m really excited about this dress change. I’ve dabbled around in Japanese culture even before meeting Mr. Sew, so having the opportunity to wear a kimono at our wedding feels kind of like a cultural rite-of-passage to me, if that makes any sense. And of course, I’m super grateful of our friend and her dress-generosity. I can’t wait to wear it, and I hope Mr. Sew will love it too!

Now, should I ship it (insured, of course) to Hawaii, or should I leave room to take it with me on the flight? What’s safer? And how do you say thank you for something like this?

BEAUTIFUL!!! Be sure that someone on Mr. Sew’s side of the family knows how to tie those belts/obis. I hear it can be hard to find people who can do that these days (though maybe not in Hawaii)! Can’t WAIT to see pics!!!

That is absolutely beautiful!!! How awesome of your friend to loan it to you.

If it were me, I’d hand carry that on the plane. I wouldn’t want to risk losing something that was loaned to me.

Insurance doesn’t cover sentimental value…

Can’t wait to see pics of you in this!

How awesome! I agree that it would be safer to take it with you on the plane since it’s not yours. Hopefully you’ve got a little extra space? It is just as expensive and valuable as a wedding dress, as I’m sure you know! That will make for some very cool pictures albeit slightly uncomfortable and hot ones! It does take a long time to put on and requires a seasoned pro- one of my students here actually trained to put one on! What part of the day will you be wearing it for?

BTW I think your date is coming up, which means your honeymoon will be too.. Are you all sorted for Japan? Especially Tokyo? I am somewhat of a resource, holler if you need me!

SO BEAUTIFUL!!! You’re going to look amazing!!!!

My fiance lives out of town and they have a “prom” every year at his medical school, I’ve hauled multiple gowns and dresses across the country, so here’s the best advice I can give:

Bring it on board with you. Pack the brocade part in a garment bag with your wedding gown(s) and the accessories and anything smaller in your cary-on luggage. In my experience, the flight attendants will hang it in the captains closet or with the business class jackets OR they will put it in its own overhead bin and shut the door so things don’t get piled on top of it. Be clear that it’s a wedding gown (asking a female flight attendant is a bonus, lol) and overly grateful for any assistance they can offer.

Checking and shipping leaves too many things to chance. Having complete chain of custody is the only way to ensure everything makes it safely! I’ve been traveling since I was knee-high to a grasshopper and I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve checked a bag (even before the outrageous fees)- and I’ve only lost my luggage once-because I checked it.

Best of luck! I hope this helps!!

How about having one of the professional photos of you in it framed and giving it to her as a memento?

That is really beautiful!

As for the cheongsam, you should defiantly try ordering one online. I recently needed a Chinese dress, and the drawing you drew in your last post is very similar to the one I bought, except mine doesn’t have a slit. Like you, I was afraid of going shopping in stores since not only am I not asian, I’m freaky tall at 5′10, and not as skinny as the stereotypical asian women those dresses are designed for. I ended up buying mine at: http://www.chinesemoods.com/Chinese_Products/2009-Chinese-Beautiful-Bare-Back-Wedding-Dressaw010905-42-p-3752.html it

I like this dress because it combined the traditional cheongsam with some western influences. I have hips, and this dress flares out a little at the bottom, flattering me much better than a traditional dress would have. I did end up having to fix the hem and take it in a little on the sides, but those were easy fixes, and other than that the dress was made well, and shipped crazy fast (less than 3 days all the way from China)!

Hope that helps, but I’d defiantly recommend that site if you get desperate for a dress.

I wanted so badly to go this route. I found one I loved.

It cost more than my wedding dress. :( No kimono for me. I’m so glad it worked out for you though!

I would carry it on so as to ensure it is safe. Also, if you need a tutorial on tying an obi, I have a short video clip of a friend teaching me on my trip to Japan last year. PM me and I can email it to you if you are interested, it’s pretty fool proof. I brought back an obi ti potentially use with my reception dress but in order to find a navy blue, I had to buy a men’s obi so I too am hoping no one notices that it’s slightly more narrow. Have fun in the kimono!
