RSVPs Make Me Smile

June 10th, 2010 @ 10:15 am by Mrs. Lace

RSVPs can be a source of stress as many of the other bees have shared. On the one hand, you have your best friend who drove to your house as soon as she got her RSVP to give you her response and ask, “Am I the first person to RSVP?!” to the one who holds onto the card for what seems like years. When you ask them if they’re coming they say, “Oh. Is the RSVP card due already?” (Yes, it was due two months ago.) So I’ve compiled a list of reasons why the RSVP process sucks.

RSVP WOES

  • the uninvited plus one
  • the one without a name
  • the late one
  • the one who doesn’t mark their meal choice
  • the very late one
  • the yes, then no
  • the no, then yes
  • the very, very late one
  • the one you have to tactfully call so that you don’t end up in an hour long conversation (you have planning to do after all!)

But, I’m on the other side now.

We received our very last RSVP and it made me smile. As I typed their response into my guest list spreadsheet, I felt a sense of relief. It’s DONE. Everyone who is coming is on there. I know their names. I know their meal choice. I know the name of their unborn children. Okay, maybe not, but I know enough for the wedding.

So, if you are collecting RSVPs, take heart, there’s light at the end of the tunnel!

What’s your best or worst RSVP story?

My BFF (and MOH) RSVP’d before the invitations even came back from the printer! I haven’T sent them out but we’re doing an online RSVP so I’m sure some people won’t do it right.

Haha, on RSVP woes you forgot the old “I don’t know if I have to work or not yet, so can I just tell you in a couple of weeks?” NO, I am not paying for you and your wife just because you might come! Call your boss, dang it!

It seemed like my RSVP process ended the day of my wedding… **SIGH**

I’m in the process of collecting mine. We did an online RSVP form (where each invitation has a unique code, so that +1s couldn’t be added). Most bizarre responses so far is “Can the steak be cooked rare for me?” and “I’d like my meal to be served with steamed vegetables and roasted potatoes.” Is this a restaurant?

Also, we added a place for comments, and many of the “no” responses put in a note of good wishes. But FI made a 140 character (twitter) limit, and didn’t write that, so we have a few half-letters when we pull up our RSVP sheet.

@slicey19: We did ours online too. We had one who did RSVP, but I never received it. Several who had a hard time and ended up calling or emailing me their RSVP’s. And a few who didn’t know how to RSVP online and didn’t do anything until I called them.

@Sage: Haha….seriously! Figure it out!!

@jgoulart: Yes, last night, I found out my grandpa is ill so my Dad’s entire side of the family may not come. That’s 40 people.

@supergeek: Haha…can I get mine with potatoes au gratin? That’s so funny!

Oh Lord - we had several. One entire family (3 invites) who swore their son sent them all in - none of them ever arrived. No, they didn’t come.

But the worst would have to be when I texted a friend who swore up and down throughout our engagement she would be there. Then missed the RSVP deadline. Then said she lost the invite, and asked for another week to decide. Then when I texted to retrieve the final answer (which I already assumed was no) - I was asked, “Will anyone good I know be at your wedding?”

Um. Yeah - how about the Bride and Groom? I honestly didn’t know how to respond without being snarky, because she knew 2 of my bridesmaids really well, and several other of our mutual friends that were attending.

Haven’t spoken to that “friend” since, by the way.

*We found texting to be a useful, less awkward way to silocit responses from some of the younger delinquent responders, just FYI for future brides.

How about the ‘I thought you knew I was coming, you mean I still have to RSVP?’ Well yeah, I’m no mind reader.

Best was the first one I got back. She was my old best friend from elementary-high school that I lost touch with until recently. The stamp wasn’t even canceled and no yucky scrape marks indicating it went through the mail. I think she hand delivered it to the mail box. Too cute. She is way excited. :-)

I got the final, updated list from my FMIL (she was double-checking to make sure everything was correct). And there were a couple individuals we overlooked. And she didn’t include a mailing address for them. GAH! So, I’m not quite done yet - 2 more addresses to track down. Then I can print the RSVP cards and get everything assembled (we’re putting everyone’s name on their RSVP so I don’t have to worry about woe #2.

@November Bride: OUCH! What kind of questions was THAT?! I imagine that all the guests are the bride and groom are pretty “good” considering their your friends and family. Text is a good idea. I would e-mail and wait and wait and wait.

@Shyness76: Oh super cute! I love that she brought it to you. We had one of the “I thought you knew I was coming” RSVP for our rehearsal dinner. *shaking head*

@Goldilocks1107: Okay, seriously, another RSVP woe when you think you’re done with a list or escort cards or whatever and you have to go back and print 3 or reprint your list. It’s not hard, just annoying because you thought you were done!

Haha! Funny, and I’m glad your done with that process now. My RSVP drama was surprisingly tame, the most I got was one without a name.

Oh, I was so relieved when the RSVP-proces was finally done yesterday. It really was a long wait!

Fun list! Congrats for making it to the other side. All our RSVPs are going to each of our parents respectively, so we get nothing. And no one is updating our google doc on it. I want the bliss of seeing the cards in the mail. But we technically don’t have an address right now.

@Miss Hot Wings: Maybe it’s better that you don’t see them. :) Let them worry about it!

I’m sure people have this kind of thing all the time, but my favorite for our wedding so far is the person who wrote MY name on the M___ line and said that 2 would be attending! I opened it and giggled — FI said “Oh, you’re bringing a date? Do I get a +1?”

I also have a favorite from handling my best friend’s RSVPs for her wedding back in 2006. She and her FI had opted to just put a line without the M for the names. One person wrote “I can’t wait to be there!” on the line!

I hate the RSVP process — hated it the first time around, for my daughters baptism, and sweet 16, mom and dads 50th — and now OH NO!!!!! I have to deal with it again????????? Ugg we are using online rsvps — not gotten too may yet — most rsvped only for the ceremony not the reception — I figured that was a mistake so we reworded the website. I am actually a litle upset that the no’s did not post a little messge (its an option when you rsvp) I mean lke my aunt couldnt say “sorry i cant make the wedding — good luck”??

it must feel good to be on the other end of the rsvp count. i’ve been trying to get my mom to understand the importance of the rsvp before i start sending invites but its been a long, hard battle.

@ablet: There are a lot out there, but I built my own website using Wix and used a response form.
