Mrs. Turtle's Picture
Mrs. Turtle, Central California Age and Occupation: 21, Art Student/Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 22, English Student Engagement Date: August 16, 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Mr. Turtle's Grandparents' backyard, Arroyo Grande, CA About Me: I am a California girl who loves the beach and the mountains, but is quite satisfied living right in the middle where I can enjoy the best of both worlds. I am happiest when traveling to faraway places, wandering through museums, watching old movies, or baking up a storm. Mr. Turtle and I are high school sweethearts and fellow book nerds who both drive Mini Coopers and are most likely to be found browsing in antique stores. We're having so much fun planning our European garden wedding with a vintage twist and can't wait to share more of life's adventures together!
About Mrs. Turtle

Growing up, I’ve always enjoyed looking at the pictures from my parents’ sweet little church wedding, which took place over twenty-two years ago in my original hometown of Morgan Hill, California.

Something Old Turned Something New: Part 1 : wedding accessories central ca Church church

Early on in our wedding planning, I realized that although I did not plan to wear my mom’s wedding dress, I really wanted to find a way to incorporate it into our day somehow. I’ve seen a lot of great approaches to doing this, including everything from the bride wrapping her bouquet with lace from her mother’s dress to organizing a whole display of family wedding gowns from multiple generations.

Personally, I knew exactly how I wanted to incorporate my mom’s dress as soon I ran across Holly Stalder on Etsy.

Holly is a fashion designer out of Portland, Oregon who loves working with salvaged antique fabrics and trims, incorporating these elements into her modern designs. Once I saw some of the bridal shrugs in her Etsy shop, I contacted her about making one for me, using the lace from my mom’s wedding dress. She was happy to do it and we began talking back and forth about my custom shrug design. Here are some of her beautiful designs that caught my attention:

Check out this video, from Holly’s blog, in which she shares some details about her design process.

While Holly was working on my shrug, she would send me photos of it in progress, and I would just get so excited about this aspect of my wedding day outfit! My shrug arrived last week, and I just can’t wait to show you how it came out! (Coming up neeeext!!)

Have you been able to incorporate any items from your family members’ weddings into your wedding? I would love to hear some of your neat stories!

That’s a great idea!! I wish I could have done something like that. But my mom chopped her dress into a mini and dyed it black. LOL!

We did use the silver old-fashioned champagne goblets that my parents used at their wedding in Spain in 1970.

We also did a Spanish coin ceremony using the coins from their wedding and my great-grandmother’s silver mesh coin purse.

I loved these details!

Those are gorgeous! What a great idea! My mom gave me my grandmother’s engagement ring as my something old, which I’m having the florist attach to my bouquet.

amazing! My mom got rid of her dress when she realized I wouldn’t fit in it (I’m a bit larger in the bust) I wish that we could have preserved some of the beautiful lace. I can’t wait to see your shrug!

That’s such a great idea. If my sisters and I hadn’t destoyed my mom’s dress using it for dress up when we were little I would definitely want to do something like that. I’m excited to see what yours will look like.

What a totally creative way to use your mom’s dress! Too late for me, but I love it nonetheless.

You all have such great ideas for honoring your family’s marriages at your weddings! I love it! :)
@sulaii211: No, his hair is just blowing in the wind.
@jordynrose: What a small world! That’s awesome! She looks so pretty!
@Miss Knitting: That’s hilarious! Your mom’s dress probably got more use out of it being in the dress up bin than most people’s wedding dresses ever get!
