Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.
About Mrs. Knitting

I am a big Jackie Kennedy fan. I began reading about her in high school and I slowly began building a collection of Jackie biographies in university. Here’s a look at the collection today:

Favourite Things: Jackie Kennedy : wedding dress toronto 001 To date there’s about 26 books in my collection and I bought almost all of them at used bookstores. I definitely plan to add lots more over the years. There doesn’t seem to be any shortage of Jackie books out there. I did draw the line at buying a copy of her will though. I found one for sale at the antique market, but decided that was a bit too weird for me (although, if it had had pictures there’s a chance I would have changed my mind!).

Why the Jackie fascination?

I’m certainly not alone in my interest in Jackie and I actually sometimes wish I was so fascinated with someone a bit more offbeat like Adrienne Clarkson (former Canadian Governor General), Catherine de Medici, or even Catherine the Great (although I do have a thing for the Romanov Grand Duchesses!).

Here’s a few reasons why Jackie holds such a fascination for me:

  1. She was incredibly well educated and smart. This is really the number one reason for me. Reading biographies about Jackie really illustrates how much she loved to learn and how much she made this a priority in her life.
  2. She loved to read. I can definitely relate to this.
  3. She was by all accounts an excellent parent.
  4. She became an book editor at a stage in her life when she didn’t need to work.
  5. She loved art, ballet, the theatre, and opera
  6. She was a deeply private person who never sought out publicity.

And yes, she had nice clothes, but I don’t know that that’s one of the reasons I admire her!

What public figure do you find inspiring? Do any of you have a book collection? I’d love to hear about them.

P.S. In case you’re all dying to go out and read a Jackie book, I’d recommend Donald Spoto’s Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis: A Life. It’s so well written and definitely one of my all time favourites (obviously, I could never pick an actual favourite!).

Personally I love reading memoirs by food writers. Ruth Reichl books, especially. But the problem that I’ve recently been facing is that in their subsequent memoirs we see their (previously) happy marriages crumble and apparently food writing = becoming adulterous. Now that I’m getting hitched, it’s killing me realizing that all these writers’ marriages have led to cheating and basically fell apart. So maybe I’ll become a Jackie O fan instead!

I really love Jackie’s broke-down cousin, Edie Beale. Like LOVE. I even dressed up as Little Edie for Halloween.

I’ve always had a thing for the Kennedy’s, but specifically JFK since fourth grade when I dressed up as him and gave a speech about his life.

I want to second Donald Spoto. I have not read his book on Jackie O but he does amazing work on his biographies…always worth a read.

I commented in one of your other posts that I have a serious thing for JFK books. And my first daughter will be named Kennedy. I’ve had that planned for a long time. :)

What was it that she exemplified–”grace under pressure?”
She really was dignified. My mom always had heaps of books about her.
I love Audrey Hepburn. She was a true lady.
