Honeymoon Planning

June 13th, 2010 @ 5:10 pm by Mrs. Starfish

Growing up, my dream honeymoon was Walt Disney World. Then after going on my first vacation with Mr. S to Disney, I realized it can be way more fun as an adult (note to avoid going during school breaks and summer). As we started thinking of our honeymoon, Disney was in the running, but Florida is the only place we’ve really gone on vacation together. So, we started to consider tropical beaches and started thinking of various spots in the Caribbean or Hawaii.

A while into our engagement, Starfish Aunt offered her time share in Disney World for our honeymoon, which was beyond generous. It was perfect because she has it in October, right after our wedding. Then Mr. S started a new job and we realized he will not have accrued enough time off by the time our wedding is here to really enjoy a honeymoon. We came up with a few options: take the honeymoon as unpaid, take a minimoon, or skip the honeymoon completely.

We decided to do a mix of things. We are going to extend our stay in Newport to spend more time with our family, so it will sort of be a minimoon. Then, at some point in 2011, when Mr. S has more time, we’ll go on our “honeymoon”. We don’t know where, but that is the best part of this it will be one less thing to plan. Between wedding vendors, plumbers, and floor installers, we want to take a break from plans. Once we’ve settled into the house and have said, “I do,” we’ll have some time to plan a fun and relaxing vacation. We’re already looking forward to it!

Has vacation time or a new job affected your honeymoon plans?

We’ve had this problem too, but to make up for it, we’re planning two trips for 2011: one to Belgium, and one to Argentina! It’s nice to not have to plan now and also, we’ll have more time to save up for these trips.

My husband had vacation time issues too. So we extended our time at our wedding location for a “minimoon” then went on our real honeymoon a few months later. It worked great for us!

I’m taking some unpaid days off because I started a new job 2 weeks ago - so worth it to me to have 1 week uninterrupted right after the wedding with my Mr

I actually put off job-finding until post wedding, because I didn’t want to have to take off. I know that sounds totally crazy, but yeah. :-/

That is still great even with that mini-moon you are going to have. It will still be great!

We’re doing the mini-moon/real honeymoon next year thing too, not because of vacation time, but because we’ve had so many unexpected expenses this year, that we really can’t afford to do the full Mexican rivera cruise that we wanted to. We’re going to a convention together (we’re nerds!- but that’s how we met, so it’s totally appropriate) and then spending a day or two at Disneyland. Then sometime next year we’ll go take our real honeymoon.

Ah that’s a toughie. Mr. L also started a new job this year but we made sure he could negotiate in a long honeymoon. Just no time off around the holidays :( I think spending a minimoon with your family is a great idea though - keeps the celebration going!

That’s a challenging one, but glad you were able to come up with a creative solution that works! :)

“Vacation time” and PTO and all that made up “time” makes me nutty. This is such a special and wonderful time and I just hate that newlyweds have to make compromises. I’m so glad you and Mr. Starfish are working it out!

i always wanted to go to disney world for my honeymoon too while i was growing up! i thought it would be the perfect mixture of fun times, relaxation, and some romantic sunsets.
since you’ve been to disney world have you thought about going to disney land in CA instead? or a disney land in another country? that might be cool.

We’re doing this same thing! We’re taking two nights at a nice hotel on the California coast right after the wedding, and then we’re going on a “real” honeymoon maybe next fall. It’ll be more like an anniversary trip, but we’ll treat it as a honeymoon. My sweetie has to go into some work training that he can’t miss right after. It’ll still be great!

I definitely think that’s the best way to do it, its nice to have some time together but a honeymoon is a once in a lifetime experience and you want it to be right
