Veil Shopping

June 14th, 2010 @ 4:58 pm by Mrs. Knitting

As I pretty much always having wedding stuff floating in the back of my mind, I’m almost always keeping an eye out for items for the wedding. While I haven’t actually gone Veil Shopping (that’s right—capital letters), there are a few places I drop by every so often to see if they have anything suitable.

The List:

Joy’s Theatricals

I love this place. The owner (Joy) is a former costume designer and she sells and rents evening wear as well as custom designs wedding dresses. I didn’t actually learn about her until after I found my dress, otherwise I definitely would have been interested in working with her. She also does custom designed veils, so if I don’t end up finding what I want anywhere else, this is where I’ll be looking.

One of Joy’s lovely dresses:

Blue Banana Market

This is a fantastic store in Kensington Market that sells items by various sellers. One of the vendors, Le Petit Chapeau, makes these gorgeous and pretty affordable hats and birdcage veils so I’ve definitely been keeping an eye out there.

If I was having a city hall wedding I would be all over this beauty from Le Petit Chapeau. Perhaps I’ll need to work this into my rehearsal dinner outfit…

St. Lawrence Market Antique Market

I am totally in love with this market and will of course be looking for a veil here.

So, it’s not the nicest market building, but it’s full of gems:

Stella Luna

Okay, I haven’t actually been keeping an eye out here as I have never actually been, but I definitely plan to go. Stella Luna is a vintage store I keep hearing the most amazing things about (like $40 Kelly bag), but I never actually manage to get there. Perhaps the hunt for the perfect veil will motivate me!

As you can see, the one place I’m not looking is a traditional bridal boutique or salon. I’m hoping to completely avoid having to buy my veil at a place like that. I’d really like to find something suitable at one of the slightly offbeat and very local places listed above. I love being able to support Toronto businesses!

What slightly unusual places did you go looking for a veil?

One of my friends had a really nice birdcage veil at her wedding so I asked her where she got it from and told me the Etsy vendor. As it turns out, the Etsy vendor is local to me so it made purchasing it really easy (and it was tres affordable!)

I plan to get mine from Etsy! Much cheaper than any of the bridal stores I’ve seen. I wish we had some stores around here like the ones in your post - they sound great!

I got mine from Etsy as well. I saw the shape I wanted (small birdcage) but it had flowers and feathers on it and I asked her if she could make it without those so I could use fresh flowers day of. She was very accommodating and affordable!

Oh, I totally support you in this. My mother made my veil, so I never did the bridal salon, either. However, this weekend I went veil shopping with my friend and the prices were OUTRAGEOUS! For a fingertip veil with a little bit of chantilly lace was $800!!!!!! Highway robbery and it’s not like there’s anything *that* special. I love, love, love vintage and hope you find something unique and wonderful!!! Look forward to reading about your adventures and seeing what you eventually come up with!

ebay! My mom cut it in half to give me a fingertip length veil. So I now have 2 :-) I figure I can then sell both after the wedding and try to recoup that $20 expenditure!

I think I bought my veil from the same place that I purchased my wedding dress from. It wasn’t really unusual. I really like bird cage veils myself!

I ended up getting my veil from the same store where I got my dress, but I wish I had explored other routes as well!
