Twenties Girl

June 15th, 2010 @ 11:23 am by Mrs. Knitting

So, using my tried and true method of wandering around and browsing in stores, I FOUND A VEIL!!! Sort of. Okay, it’s not actually a veil, but I guess more of a wedding headpiece or cap. I found it while wandering through Kensington Market (not actively looking for a veil) in Toronto and saw the most gorgeous and unique head piece on a mannequin in the window of the vintage store Ego.

Here it is (and yes, these are really awkward self portraits!):

What can I say? I’m totally in love. It’s from the 1920s and is apparently very rare because headpieces like this are incredibly fragile. I’d never seen anything like it before, which I have to say is definitely part of the appeal. I also just think it’s completely beautiful. Since it was from a vintage store it was also very affordable, which certainly appealed to me, having been quoted $85 for essentially a piece of netting at another store.

The only part that wasn’t so pleasant was the store owner’s attitude. As I mentioned the cap was on a mannequin in the front window and when I asked the owner if I could try it on he said, “Not today.” I was quite put off and replied, “Oh, okay,” in a very confused and annoyed tone and started to walk out the door. He then seemed to change his mind (maybe he decided I was a serious customer???) and let me try it on. I of course loved it and snatched it up, but it would have been a much more pleasant experience if he’d be a bit nicer.

Currently I’m planning to wear the cap the way it’s positioned in the above pictures, but it’s entirely possible I’ll change my mind about that between now and the wedding. I also have the option of attaching a piece of netting to the cap so that I can still have my birdcage veil.

What do you think? I need some advice. Netting or no netting?

I love that! SO pretty! I think it would look really beautiful if you added netting to it (of course, it looks great on its own too!)

this is so cute. don’t put netting on-it’s beautiful the way it is. Is there an offical name for this headpiece?

p.s. no netting. I think it might be too much. But maybe I’m not envisioning it correctly.

I would leave the netting off. It’s gorgeous and unique the way that it is.

oh my gosh i looooove it! sucks the shopguy was such a grump though, i hate that. don’t know if y’all have yelp in canada but maybe write a little review and note that.

maybe pick up a little tulle for a test run of how it would look with netting and post pictures so we can decide!! cant really picture how it would be but i’m leaning toward thinking it would look better on its own — it is LOVELY.

Bleh for poor customer service but YAY for a great find! It’s lovely, I don’t think netting is necessary unless you prefer it :)

So cool, I absolutely love it! Maybe there is a way you can attach netting for a birdcage veil during the ceremony but remove it and still keep the headpiece for the reception? Can’t wait to see what else you come up with for your wedding!!

Can you do easily detachable netting somehow? So you could have a veil for the ceremony but take it off and just have the “cap” for the reception?

I love it as is. I don’t know what you’re doing with your hair, but I’m picturing a sleek updo and this would just be like a beautiful applique.

That headpiece is so unique and pretty and it has pearls too! I’d probably leave it on it’s own for simplicity.

I guess it depends on how much lace and other detail are in our dress. It may bee too much with the veil, but I’d get a piece of net and see how it looks. SO exciting!!
