Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

Now that I’ve shared a little bit about our wedding and our inspiration, I figure it’s about time we take a little trip down memory lane and I tell you our story!

… Once upon a time… just kidding.

Rewind! Our Story, Part 1: It All Begins… : wedding austin relationships 112 1

The first photo ever taken of Mr. Cardigan and me!

Mr. Cardigan and I met in high school. We took Geometry together (he was in the “fast track” and was taking it as a freshman), and he claims he was in love with me from the first time he saw me. He would constantly “forget” his glasses in another class and need to come sit next to me in the front of the room. He would then proceed to kick my flip flops off and draw scribbles all over my notes. So mature.

Site note: I used to wear the same pair of flip flops almost every day in high school, and I recently tried to get rid of them, but Mr. Cardigan wouldn’t let me. Apparently they hold sentimental value for him. Cute, in a really strange way!

Anyways, Mr. C was smitten, and I was kind of annoyed by the curly-haired kid who wouldn’t leave me alone. At the time, I was dating a big-bad 18 year old from another school, so I wasn’t really all that interested in Mr. Cardigan’s pursuits. We did, however, become fast friends and he always made me laugh. He continued to pursue me until he found out I had a boyfriend, and then he was absolutely heartbroken… just kidding. He was a 15 year old boy—he moved on in about 5 minutes.

Fast forward to a year later, and it was the start of tryouts for the One Act Play. It was my first year trying out, so I was very nervous, but Mr. C was a OAP veteran, and he helped me out in practicing for tryouts. Our school was doing Into the Woods that year, and Mr. C and I just so happened to be trying out for two parts that share a love scene. Coincidence? I think not. I didn’t think I even stood a chance for my part against all of the other (older and more talented) girls who were trying out, but I went for it – mostly because I really liked the part, but also because I had decided I might have a little crush on Mr. C and it seemed like a good opportunity to kiss him. ;-)

We both got the parts and within weeks we were dating!

In costume at one of our performances. I feel like I should point out that my costume was originally GORGEOUS, and I was in love with it, but my director decided she didn’t like it. So I got that monstrosity. Oh, the joys of acting!

Very soon after we started dating, Mr. C and I knew we would be together forever. We fell for each other hard and fast, and we were pretty much inseparable for the rest of high school. But, alas, I am older than him and I graduated first. We had been dating for a little over a year and a half when I left for college, and we chose to stay together. A&M is only about two and a half hours from where we lived, but when you’re 18 years old, that’s practically cross-country. I had to spend 10 months in College Station without Mr. Cardigan, and I’ll be completely honest: it was really hard for me. We were living completely separate lives and were in very different stages of our lives. It was so hard to relate to his complaints about senior year when I was struggling with my first year of college, being on my own for the first time, and having NO friends up in College Station.

Home for Christmas break – halfway there!!

But, as hard as it was for Mr. C and I to go through that time apart, I am so glad that we did. It made all of the time I got to spend with him so special, and I will always cherish the memories of weekends when he would come visit me—it was like we hadn’t seen each other in years, and it was always so heartbreaking when he had to go home. It also brought us so much closer than I ever thought it would. Our relationship is so much stronger today because of the time that we had to spend apart!

Finally, a year later Mr. C came up to College Station to join me, and it felt like everything was right with the world again!

Reunited and it feels so good!!

Were you and your SO ever long-distance? Did it strengthen your relationship as much as it did ours?

My fiance and I met my senior year at college. (I was an RA in the transfer students dorm, he was in my building. Our relationship was a big no-no. Ooops?) He’s a year older than me, but because of the way he did work/the junior college right out of high school he still had about 2 years left after I graduated. After graduation I moved back home, though, and we were about a 7hr drive apart for those 2 years.
Like you, I think the time apart strengthened us. It made us appreciate the time spent together all the more. And once he graduated and we moved in together, it was all the more amazing to be together again “full time”.

We were hooked up on a blind date (we went to different schools) right before my high school graduation and a year before his (he started school later) I had already chosen my college and had no plans for a long-term or long-distance relationship. But we couldn’t control it, and before I went away to school we had already decided we were meant to be, so I was a state away in college for four years. He didn’t follow me. I waitressed in Ohio on the weekends just to see him after my shifts, and we made it through, but it was tough. Less than one month after I graduated we moved in together, and three years later, we are getting married. Tough times though.

So sweet! Makes me wish I met my FI in high school even more!
We did do long distance for the first 7 months of our relationship and I think it made us get to know each other on a different (better) level faster. No time for b.s. and the time you do get together is even more special.

Your story is so similar to mine! My fiance and I are the same age and started dating the summer before our senior year of high school. He decided to go to a university 2.5 hours away, while I stayed at one closer to home. We were apart for a year and half before I transferred to be with him. We’re now doing the long distance thing again, except this time he’s in the Caribbean in med school while I’m at home in Indiana. It’s definitely difficult, but for us it’s been worth it. We’re so much stronger because of it!

Cute story, thanks for sharing! :)

My FI and I spent the first 1.5 years long distance so I can totally relate. You two are too cute! Love Mr. C’s expression in the last pic!

We were in a similar situation although we met in college. FI is a year older so when he graduated he was to be only 45 minutes away for that year but as a hockey player had little control over his whereabouts and got traded within his first week to TEXAS (from NY)! It felt a million miles away and we were in very different places.
I decided I would move with him to Texas after graduating (he proposed graduation afternoon as I said no ring until I have a diploma!), but life had another vision for us. I was offered an awesome job in NYC two weeks before moving to TX which I couldn’t pass up. That was the hardest decision we’ve made but it’s continued to make us stronger. It hasn’t been too fun planning the wedding apart but it’s continuously improved our communications skills.
Last week I told my work I’ll be leaving at the end of July to move with him to Ohio where he’s accepted a coaching job for the next year. It will be VERY sweet and surreal to finally live together and no more planes! (I hate flying!)
Our wedding feels like a true celebration–the end of long distance and the start of our together-ness!

cute story! i cant believe ur high school let you have actual kissing in ur plays. i have never ever heard of this being acceptable anywhere else….. getting random high school kids to kiss one another seems like opening up a huge can of worms

I don’t want to sound rude but how did you not have any friends at A & M your freshman year? I went to a Big 12 college (or now more like a big 10 after all the conference drama!) and made friends my freshman year. Hopefully you made friends after he was there so your college experience didn’t completely revolve around him! Nothing beats a nice girls night out! :)

Wow, it’s so cool to hear so many long-distance stories! I’m impressed - a lot of you have survived some serious distance!

@hrev2010: Oh, I definitely ended up making friends later, but I didn’t live on-campus my freshman year and I wasn’t very involved at all. It was really my own fault! I was living with my cousin, so she was the only person I ever spent time with, and I just didn’t put myself out there to make any friends. By my sophomore year, I had made plenty of friends, though!

Hi! We did long distance for about 1.5 years. We also met in university and then he got a job in another province. We were lucky because we got to visit each other quite a bit. It was hard but every time we saw each other is was so special because we had to savour that time. It wasn’t so bad afterall and now we’re living together!!

You guys are so cute, I can’t get over it! I know how hard long distance is, and especially how amazing it is to be in the same place again once it’s over. So glad you and Mr. C got to go to the same college!

My fiance and I met online, so we did the long-distance thing for the first year+ of our relationship. Yes, it’s hard… but just like you guys, if it’s right, then you can make it work.
