Mrs. Pudding's Picture
Mrs. Pudding, Greater Toronto Area/Vermont Age and Occupation: 26, High School Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Computer Engineer Engagement Date: August 2008 Wedding Date: July 2010 Venue: Catholic Ceremony, Cultural Hall Reception About Me: Quite literally a citizen of the world, I was born in Poland, grew up in Canada, and now live in the beautiful state of Vermont. I love reading historical biographies, multi-tasking, teasing my hair, and, despite my height, wearing high heeled shoes. I am the ultimate klutz with an uncanny ability to put on a graceful front. Mr. Pudding and I have been dating for over six years, and are very excited to finally merge our (very large) families. We are planning a traditional Polish-Catholic wedding that is anything but predictable.
About Mrs. Pudding

… I stay up and think of the wedding.

Ladies and Gents, the wedding insomnia has hit me. HARD.

Late at Night when All the World is Sleeping.... : wedding emotional vermont Car car

(source)

I knew that it was coming, since I am quite prone to bouts of sleeplessness. Whenever something exciting and/or terrifying is about to happen to me, I can’t sleep no matter what I try. And it’s not always big events that set me off.

I am one of those people who can’t sleep before a trip, or if I have a test coming up. There has been more than one occasion where I couldn’t fall asleep because I had a really, really, REALLY exciting lesson planned for the next day. I am pretty sure that my teenage students would classify me as a loser.

So, I really should not be surprised that I am sitting here typing this post at 6:30AM, not having slept a single wink. I arrived at Mama P’s house last night, and the excitement of RSVPs/shower plans/dresses was more than I could handle.

I am terrified that I will not be able to sleep in the nights leading to our wedding day.

Are you suffering from wedding insomnia, or am I the only one? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to ensure that I get enough beauty sleep?

I’m totally suffering of the same thing - I’d like to hear some good (natural) ways to combat it!

I can’t sleep the night before a flight, either! Maybe you could go to bed super early the nights leading up to your wedding–keep a boring book by your bed to nod off with or a notepad to jot down thoughts that are keeping you up?

Oh you are NOT alone!! Every single night without a doubt a know I will be up thinking ‘centerpieces, garter, jewelry, shrip, chiken, FLOWERS… MONEY?!?!?’ haha Its tough to deal with so much going on in your head especially hearing my LOVELY Fiance snoring sound asleep right next to me. I try and have some sleepytime tea before bed (if you enjoy tea) or maybe read a book completely UN wedding related… sometimes things like that take my mind off of the countless ideas, visions and worries I have echoing in my head!!
Just find comfort in the fact that when you are staring out your window at the moon there are millions of other brides staring at that same moon :)

I COMPLETELY get that too!!! I find sleepy time tea is really helpful, or when I am home alone (FI works night shifts) I shut all the curtains and turn off the lights really early in the evening and trick my body into getting tired early… have a cup of tea and a bath and go to bed. But, it has to appear dark for that to work!! Also, when all else fails, I have a handy stash of a natural product called Melatonin… I get it at any pharmacy, and it helps with sleeping, and settling the brain!!

I do the same thing!!! It doesn’t take much to get me so excited/nervous that I can’t sleep! Reading helps me almost every time!

I have this problem, too. I usually try to do something to keep my mind occupied (on something other than the wedding) like counting down from 1,000 in my head.

Also, @Mrs. Parfait’s idea of reading to help you nod off might be a good one!

I have the same problem. Last night, I half dreamt, half imagined forgetting some huge detail or having something go wrong at every step of the big wedding day. First: not getting my dress steamed. Second: not getting my hair done. Third: uninvited, underdressed (sort of scary looking) guests showing up. The worst part is, it’s not all in my head–after sealing and sending our entirely DIY invites, I realized I never included a single mention of the address for our ceremony site–just the name of the church and the city. Arrrrg.

I’m the same way, and I find that melatonin tablets from the drugstore (over the counter) help make me fall asleep when my mind is racing.

I am with you completely! With more than a year to go, I am starting to have trouble sleeping. I dread the nights as the date gets closer! Reading helps sometimes, as long as the book is boring. And sometimes, I watch cartoons on tv, with the volume down low.

i’m definitely suffering from that too!
Or was, until a friend recommended Rescue Remedy Sleep spray - http://www.rescuesleep.com/home/default.asp

I definitely notice that it helps to calm me down - and not think about fabric floral garlands and 30 handsewn table squares…
hope it helps some of you ladies! i got a bottle at Whole Foods

From their site:
Rescue Sleep is totally natural and contains six of the 38 Bach® Flower Essences: Rock Rose for terror and panic, Impatiens for irritation and impatience, Clematis for inattentiveness, Star of Bethlehem for shock, Cherry Plum for irrational thoughts, and White Chestnut for relief from repetitive thoughts.

I take the GRE tomorrow, and while I’ve managed to get my all-too-characteristic insomnia under control in the last few days, I lost a ton of sleep last week and the week before.

I know I’m not going to be able to sleep before the wedding. There’s just no way.

It’s actually kind of nice to know I’m not the only one who’s consistently kept awake by excitement. :)

I get this too! To help me get to sleep I:

-Jot down everything im thinking about. Just like a list. even 1 word for each topic does it. I never actually look at the list in the morning, but this really helps me lets go of the things I lay awake thinking that I need to ‘remember’

-If you have someone (FI I hope!) sleeping in the bed next to you, try to mimic their breathing. Concentrate on breathing in and out when they do, this almost always works for me

-Get in a comfortable position. Then imagine, from your goes up, each part of your body relaxing, and breath in 3 times whilst you do, before you move onto the next body part. For example, first you toes- focus on them and imagine them sinking into the mattress. Breath in and out slowly 3 times. Then your ankles, then your calves and so on.

Good luck!!

Melatonin! You can get it in the vitamin section of the drug store - its the natural occuring subtance that dwindles you to your slumber.

Anytime I have trouble sleeping, I pop one tiny white pill with a glass of water, snuggle up in the covers and within 20-30 minutes im relaxed and off to sleep.

Orange blossom water! (”agua de azahar”). put a tablespoon in a hot cup of water and drink it as a tea. my grandma always used to give this to me when i was too excited to sleep–for example, the day before every single first day of class and the night before my first day of work… argh. i think i may need to stock up on this myself before my wedding…

Not natural by any means but Ambien works like…a dream for me. I only use it occasionally but have a feeling the 2-3 nights before the wedding I will use it.
