Mrs. Earrings's Picture
Mrs. Earrings, Fresno, CA/ Nelson, New Zealand Age and Occupation: 20, Student, Wannabe Writer Fiance's Age and Occupation: 19, Photography Student Engagement Date: February 14, 2010 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Gardens of the World About Me: I'm a girl from down under who grew up in Indonesia and I'm marrying a California boy. I'm addicted to all things sweet, have never met a chocolate silk pie than can get the better of me, and have dreams of one day being a fulltime novelist. I go weak in the knees for lace, tea cups, and a beautifully crafted sentence. When I get excited about something (whether it is historical linguistics or the Beatles) I tend to go overboard in research, and planning this wedding is no different. Mr. Earrings is my high school sweetheart, my best friend, and somehow we combine all our quirks into one big happy mess.
About Mrs. Earrings

Our Venue

June 15th, 2010 @ 5:40 pm by Mrs. Earrings

When I read other brides’ stories about their long and agonised hunts for the perfect venue I feel a little guilty. See, I never had to look for our venue, because I always knew exactly where our wedding would be held.

Allow me to introduce you to Gardens of the World.

Our Venue : wedding new zealand venues Garden garden

(Personal Photo)

In 1989 (the year I was born incidentally) my grandfather decided to clear his land of the apple trees it once had and start creating his dream—a beautiful garden. Actually, it is a bit too big to just be called a garden. It’s more like a park. Anyway, you get the idea.

Ever since then, he kept on developing and adding to the garden. He put in a rose garden and fountains, a pond (which we grandchildren still call “the lake”), an awesome copper elephant statue in a creek, a Japanese stone garden, a herbaceous section and more. It is called “Gardens of the Worlds” because it is divided into sections for the different types of plants he has planted: so there is a New Zealand section, Australia, The Americas, and, Granddad’s favourite because he and my grandma immigrated to NZ from Kenya, the African section. The garden has been open to the public for visiting, weddings, memorial services, picnics, etc. for years. Most of us grandkids have lived pretty mobile lifestyles, but the garden and our grandparents have been symbols of something that always remained stable and there for us.

In 2008 Granddad decided that the work that was involved in maintaining the garden was too much anymore for just him and one part-time employee (yes, they had kept the garden going all by themselves with that amount of manpower!). So it was sold to a family who own a funeral home business, and who plan to keep the garden how it is, and also put a memorial garden out the back.

My Top Pick for the Reception Site (Personal Photo)

My only cousin to get married (so far) had her wedding there a few years back. And now Mr E and I have decided to be married there, and so has my younger cousin (3 weeks before us… yes, I know).

The garden will (hopefully) be the perfect setting for our wedding (both ceremony and reception!). Working with the family who now owns it has not been without some problems and I’m sure there will be some posts about that in future but right now Mr E and I are just mega-excited to be getting married in a place that is so special.

Does your venue have any special meaning to your family? Where are you getting married and what does it mean to you and your loved ones?

It’s a beautiful location, and how nice to always know that’s where you would get married! =) We’re getting married at a hotel garden in CA, but it does hold a bit of sentimental value in that my dad fell in love with it the first time he stayed there for a work function, and then brought my mom back there a couple of times, once when she was sick with terminal cancer, not long before she died. Knowing that my mom and dad had stayed there and that they both loved the beautiful gardens makes me glad that we are so lucky to get to have our wedding here!

It is so beautiful!! You’re so lucky to have this for you. Are you in your cousin sharing any thing else for your weddings besides the venue?

What a lovely garden, and it’s truly wonderful that it exists because of your grandfather’s vision. How could you possibly get married anywhere else? I love it!

@Miss Pin Cushion: no we wont be, though some relatives have tried to force us to even have a joint wedding (not happening!) which will most likely be a subject of a post one day :P

I love that! So pretty and so meaningful. We wanted to get married at my fathers cabin/property but it jus wasn’t logistical (no electricity/parking/so on and so forth) so we settled for a place close by that has not real meaning but is gorgous. I’m no worried though, everything else in the wedding is dripping with sentament.
