About Mrs. Lace

Why Is It…

June 15th, 2010 @ 6:46 pm by Mrs. Lace

Why is it that 12 days out from our wedding…

  • family tragedies and woes occur?
  • I get the hiccups randomly throughout the day?
  • I keep walking into things and become covered in bruises?
  • I break out?
  • I am getting tension headaches (okay, I guess I know the answer to this one)?

This is a tough case of Murphy’s Law! Let me count the ways!

1. My grandpa went into the hospital last week and two days later, passed away. His funeral will be the weekend before our wedding. Unfortunately, because of Chinese traditions, I’m not supposed to attend his funeral because it’s so close to my wedding. Instead, I’m supposed to wait 100 days after my wedding to make a visit to Northern California to pay my respects. My Dad’s entire side who will have to travel from Northern California to the wedding is in a planning frenzy as they prepare for the funeral.

2. I haven’t gotten hiccups in months, maybe even years! However, I came down with a bad case of hiccups… you know, the really loud ones that make your entire abdomen and head move? The kind that make you feel like you might yak? Well, after an hour or so, they went away, but then came back 4 or 5 times throughout the day. Right when I was least expecting it, they’d return! It’s been like that for a few days now! I’m hoping they go away in time for the wedding so I don’t hiccup through my vows (I, Miss Lace, *hiccup* take you, Mr. Lace, *hiccup* to be *hiccup*…).

3. I’ve been walking into beds, tables, chairs, etc. I don’t know if I’m not being careful or if my depth perception is off. My legs are covered in bumps and bruises. I burned my hand on my flat iron this morning. And the other day, I was walking toward Starbucks and right before I got to the door, my shoe lost traction and I slipped and fell on my butt. LUCKILY, there was a man sitting outside Starbucks to laugh at me and then ask if I was okay.

4. My skin has been in pretty good condition for the past few weeks thanks to drinking lots of water and eating less dairy. But, today, two monsters appeared. They’re looming under the surface, just waiting for our  wedding day to roll around!

5. The tension headaches can be expected, I guess. I’ve been immersed in wedding details, emails and finishing last minute stuff, but then came my grandfather’s passing and Mr. Lace going out of town twice this week and I realized that I’d have to do a lot of these details on my own. So far my old friends Tylenol and Excedrin have NOT been helpful.

I know that life can be unpredictable, but I was hoping that we wouldn’t have so many extra things to deal with before the wedding!

Do you/did you have any pre-wedding surprises or unanticipated issues?

I’m very, very sorry for your loss. That’s a terrible thing to have to deal with so close to your wedding.
Aside from the hiccups and tension headaches (massage could help), how are you holding up?

I’m sorry to hear about your grandpa.
As for the other “hiccups” in life (so to speak), hopefully they will be all out of the way in time for perfect skin and perfect health on the day of your wedding. I will keep my fingers crossed for that!

Im really sorry to hear about your grandpa and that you cant attend the funeral. Its always sad but it seems to hurt even more when its so close to a happy event. But he will be there in spirit smiling at his beautiful grand daughter.

I’m so sorry to hear about your Grandpa, Miss Lace. I think I can help with your hiccups though!

drinking water, being spooked, and giant pats on the back never did anything for my hiccups. Someone told me to take a (tea)spoon full of sugar, and let it slowly dissolve in my mouth. Swallow small gulps as it liquefies. The sugar mixture coats your throat, and eases the contractions. Works like magic for me!

i’m so sorry to hear about your sudden loss. murphy’s law is definitely at work. i hope that in the next few days, life gets a little bit easier for you!

our unanticipated issues:
wedding is in 5 days… 1. our puppy had to get expensive emergency surgery because he decided to eat a shoelace. 2. FH has to get some bloodwork done and seriously change his diet. 3. i’m fighting a cold and also have tons of mysterious bruises showing up and burned myself on my curling iron this morning (which could be related to the dog and not being able to sleep for the past few nights).

So sorry to hear about your grandfather. My thoughts are with you and your family as you balance this sad time with the upcoming happy one.

On a totally separate note- my never-fail cure for hiccups: drink water upside down. (IE- fill a glass about halfway with water, bend forward so your back is almost forming a table top, put your mouth on the part of the glass farthest from you [ie- put your bottom lip inside the part of the glass opposite you] tip the glass forward, and sip.)
It may take several sips, but something about the position, the way it changes your breathing, and the swallowing works like a charm. Sounds strange, trust me I know- I always get funny looks when I do it, but it works every time! And I tend to get hiccups once or twice a month.

I’m sorry about your loss. :(

In terms of breaking out, I feel you completely.
I have pretty clear skin with the occasional large pimple that never seems to go away.
Yesterday, a mere 12 days from the wedding, I start getting this massive honker on my nose.
I’m not quite sure how to attack it either.

I hope everything starts getting better for you soon!

So sorry to hear that. I’ve had some unexpected family tragedies, as well…it definitely puts my other last-minute planning woes into perspective, but its hard to handle with everything going on.
