About Mrs. Pin Cushion

I got a sewing machine for Christmas last year. It’s pretty nifty. It’s called the BROTHER CE-4000 (sounds more magical than a Nimbus 3000, doesn’t it? [With a name like that, why can’t it just finish all my sewing project for me, like a little sewing robot]).

My extensive sewing experience involves helping my mom carry around her old machine, which is 50 years old and is approximately the weight of a full grown elephant. And that’s it. Impressive, I know.

But I’m not one to let my complete ineptitude or lack of (any) experience deter me from a project. So, with the idea of making our own napkins for the wedding, I set to work on my first sewing project (with plenty of help from YouTube videos telling me things like: 1) how to turn on my sewing machine and 2) how to thread my sewing machine).

I found some cute red and white striped fabric from IKEA to fit the picnic vibe we’re aiming for (I only noticed its canvas-like quality after I bought it [it’ll just be a bit of extra exfoliation for our guests, free of charge]). As for size, Mr Pin Cushion and I thought we didn’t need ’full sized napkins’ (which seem to be about 18″ squares), so we measured our own laps and decided 12″ squares should be a-okay.

And then I cut and cut and cut. Considering the fabric was 5 feet wide, this step took up an entire room (I worked on the floor [don’t worry, it was post-Swiffering]).

I followed this basic tutorial from The Purl Bee. I made a few alterations to the tutorial (and by alterations, I mean I cut out a few steps, because let’s face it, I cut corners sometimes [which is particularly ironic, because in this instance, I cut corners by physically not cutting the corners of the napkins]). The recipe for the napkins pretty much goes as follows:

  1. Cut squares.
  2. Iron squares.
  3. Sew squares. Optional: try to sew in a straight line.

Step 2 was the worst. My super-mom heard of my ironing sorrows, and when I was home for a weekend, she woke up early and ironed nearly all of the napkins before I had even wiped the eye boogers from the corners of my eyes. I then spent most of a day sewing up the edges of the napkins that my ironing fairy prepped for me. And when I finished, I sat back, admired my handiwork and gave myself a hearty pat on the back for finishing my first DIY project:

Now I have all of these leftover scraps laying around. I kept them, thinking I might be able to use them for something. More than likely though, I’ll take after my mom and keep my fabric scraps around in a plastic bag for the next 20 years and not do anything with them.

Any suggestions for what I should do with my fabric scraps?

Did anyone else learn how to sew, or take up any other crafting skill for their wedding?

If you don’t mind donating them, check your local American Cancer Society. Some of them have quilters to make blankets for cancer patients.

My grandmother received a donated quilt from them and she adored it.

Awesome. I have to sew a table runner for our escort cards tonight & I’m NOT looking foward to it.

I think you could use the left overs to wrap around votives, or use in baskets under the rolls. You could make tiny drink napkins, or make a patch work of scraps for a runner on the main table.

You could also use some of the scraps as “matting” to mat a few of your favorite reception photos!

Good luck!!!

Bunting banner! Ooooh. I admire your sewing skills. My sewing machine and I have been through a lot together and have had to beat the crap out of eachother on occasion. But we both know who’s boss (at least for now!) ;)

Great job!

So cute! I want to sew my own napkins SO BAD, but I don’t have a sewing machine, nor do I know anyone who does. But I love how yours turned out, and I loooove Hot Dog’s idea of making a bunting banner with the fabric!

Could you use your scraps to make drink flags? (using the fabric instead of ribbon)

I really, really, really want to sew something for our wedding, but it kinda scares me. I don’t even own a sewing machine, so I don’t know what’s gotten into me.

I’ve used scraps of that size to make escort cards, fabric covered frames, and bouts for our guests. I put tutorials all up on my blog and would be happy to share!

First, let me be a nerd by saying that I love your Harry Potter reference! You’re right…few things are more magical than a Nimbus 3000, with the exception of a Firebolt of course! haha :)

Also, your mom and my mom should be fabric buddies. She has BINS of old fabric from the quilting kick she was on from a few years back. They are getting pretty dusty!

You could always use the scraps to dress up some baskets or votives or whatever decorationy objects you’ll have around. I’m sure you’ll think of something cute & creative to do with them! Good luck! :)

Oooh! I’m loving the stripes (ha!) but seriously, I’ve been on the hunt for yellow cabana striped fabric to make our table runners…. Great work with your napkins Miss PC! :)

Great ideas for far! Not sure how big your fabric scraps are but maybe you could make a table runner, placemats, fabric flowers, pillows?! haha. Maybe you should open an etsy shop and see if you cant sell some of the things you create with the leftover fabric!

Those are adorable! What about some pennant banners like Mrs. Snow had last weekend? (I’m not creepy; I was a wedding guest)

What about simply cutting them into long (thick) pieces and making them into cute bows or things you can tie at intervals to backs of chairs or such?

Also, to whoever wants to make napkins, if you at all can, consider renting a serger or borrowing one from a friend. Then there is no hemming. :)

Some how I lost my sewing machine? How do you lose a sewing machine?!?
Anyway…I digress.
I agree with the bunting banner. It would be SO adorable!

LOL! “An extra bit of exfoliation for our guests free of charge.” That was so funny. I was working on some notes at work but I needed my weddingbee fix to get me through it and I almost laughed when I read that. You did a great job though. I would love to learn how to sew like you and Miss/Mr. Sewing.

I literally busted out laughing at work when I read “… canvas-like quality after I bought it [it’ll just be a bit of extra exfoliation for our guests, free of charge]).” You’re too funny! Job well done on your first DIY project and points to mama Pin Cushion for ironing it out! ha! Get it? Okay, lame I know.

First off, sorry for the super fuzzy photos. They hadn’t looked so bad before . . .
Secondly, man, you guys have so many great ideas! I think we’ll do bunting for sure, and I love the idea of donating some of the fabric to make quilts!
