About Mrs. Socks

Every time I tell someone that my sister and I are getting married in the same year, the response is always, “Your Poor Parents!!”

Yeah. I know. It seems cruelly expensive. Here’s how it happened. Sister Socks met BIL Socks approximately 1 year before I met Mr. Socks. Their relationship was slow and steady, but my relationship with Mr. Socks was catapulted forward when I moved in with him after only 6 months of dating. After almost a year and a half of living together, we were ready to take the plunge. Sister Socks and BIL Socks were ready just about at the same time.

Sister Socks and I are VERY lucky that Dad Socks has been in the jewelry business all of our lives. Not only do we get very pretty items at Christmas, but we have the fortune of getting a discount through all of Dad Socks’ connections. One of the biggest connections we have is at the Columbus Jewelry Show.

It’s basically a girl’s dream come true: hundreds of jewelry booths selling their gorgeous baubles to jewelers and store owners. At. Cost. (Usually this means half-price or LESS than what you can buy it for at a jewelry store. )

I casually mentioned going to the jewelry show to Mr. Socks, saying that if he was ready, it was really the only time that we could pounce on a deal like this. I let it sit with him and didn’t want to pester, but knew I’d go to the jewelry show just to look even if he didn’t go for it right then.

Well… one night, I got a text when I was at home (probably reading WB). It was from Mr. Socks. Mr. Socks was in our bedroom folding laundry (isn’t he wonderful?) so I thought it was odd that he’d text me. I opened the text, and it said “Miss Socks is going to pick out her ring this weekend, but she doesn’t know yet, so don’t say anything!”

I froze. I had NO idea who this text was meant for, but I did know that it made its way to the WRONG person. After debating whether or not I should tell Mr. Socks, I decided that I should, just to get it in the open. He was so mad at himself, but in the end it allowed us to talk budget and figure it all out.

Soooo, since Sister Socks and I were both ready to get married, and this show only happens once a year, we went with Mamma Socks to ch-check it out. I went in with a VERY clear idea of what I wanted in a ring (three stone, channel set diamonds in the band, and I didn’t want a wedding ring because I wanted my budget to go toward one AWESOME ring).

Well, I tried just about every single three-stone setting I could find in the whole place. None of them were doing it for me. Until… I slipped on a seriously sparkly ring that I NEVER thought would have been “me”.

I immediately felt like I was going to puke.

I know that’s a strange reaction to have, but I think it was because I was so SET on what I had wanted and when I tried on another ring that I loved much more, my tummy did a flip flop out of confusion.

The jeweler let me wear the ring all around that afternoon as I compared it to other rings, and everything else paled in comparison. While I was about to puke over my ring, my sister also found a puke-worthy ring (in a good way, of course) and so we had made our decisions.

Nope… the boys weren’t even there. But you know what? They really didn’t care. All they cared about was that the Socks Sisters would be happy, and knowing that we grew up with impeccable taste in jewelry, they figured they’d leave it to us experts. Plus, it was a really fun experience to have with my mom and my sister, and we got fantastic deals!

Now, as for the proposals… more details to come later, but even though we got the rings together, we got engaged three months apart––I got engaged first and Sister Socks got engaged second!

Did you shop for your engagement ring in an unconventional way?

What a fun experience that must have been! Assuming your sister wasn’t jealous, anyway. ;)

Can an average person like myself get into this jewelry show? It sounds awesome.

That’s awesome you two picked your rings out together, I loved being engaged at the same time as Sister Starfish, it’s so fun going through the planning together!

My sister and I are also having our weddings within 1 year of each other. We were both engaged this past December, me first, though she will be first to walk down the aisle. When I tell people we’re both engaged, I hear a similar response, except for people always say, “poor daddy!”

@amariem25: Unfortunately no! There’s so much security involved in this thing and you have to have credentials. We’re very lucky that we could go–I wish everyone could have the opportunity to! It’s simply overwhelming!

thats so great that you got to experience it with not just your sister but your parents!! My now husband actually bought my engagement ring with my parents. He knew nothing and I had told him when the time comes to hit up my sister and parents!

Let’s expand on the tale of “The Infamous Wayward Text,” shall we? So Miss Socks was going to go to this jewelry expo and just see what kind of ring she WOULD like IF Mr Socks were to propose. And then Mr. Socks told Momma Socks that if Miss Socks found something she liked, to buy it behind her back, and then Mr Socks would pay her back. But it was all ruined when Mr Socks sent a text to his sister saying something like “I’m going to propose to [Miss Socks], but don’t tell anyone.” Except that the text didn’t go to his sister because he accidentally sent it to Miss Socks! And Voila! A couple who met online got engaged via text message. And the moral of the story is: if you want to know if your bf is going to propose to you, switch numbers with his sister in his cell phone.
The End.

@Spaniel: I don’t think she was jealous! We got along swimmingly during the whole process!
@starfish: I think the most fun was just seeing how different our weddings have turned out to be! Did you have the same experience with you sister?

My sister and I got engaged two months apart, and I have two other siblings in college. We always get the same response - “your poor parents!” At least our fiances asked permission far enough in advance that my parents knew it was coming!

@bunny: No, I’m not from Columbus, I’m originally from Cincinnati! The show is just in Columbus every year!
@clane616, Pug, & MrsCatWoman: My ring is coming soon, but we didn’t get it in time for the proposal! You’ll see tomorrow!
@Miss Scarlet: Yeah, our men asked our parents too, so they weren’t blindsided by the whole thing!

Cincy is still super close compared to practically every other bee. Let me know next time you’re back home — would love to meet up! <3

My dad is in the jewelry biz too so my story is similar! I went to a jewelry expo to hunt down my center stone. I designed the ring with my dad and showed my bf the ring design plans along the way. I think he was grateful not to have to pick out a ring for a jeweler’s daughter!
