Mrs. Knitting's Picture
Mrs. Knitting, Toronto Age and Occupation: 24, Student Recruitment Assistant Fiance's Age and Occupation: 24, Neuroscience PhD Candidate Engagement Date: October 2009 Wedding Date: December 2010 Venue: University of Toronto Faculty Club About Me: I'm a pearl wearing, etiquette book reading Toronto girl who loves cooking and baking, museums, charm bracelets, and collecting books on Jackie Kennedy (a lot). I've been known to spend Sunday mornings at the antique market, Wednesday evenings at sister sushi dinners, and any bit of spare time reading. After six and a half years of many late night walks, watching DVDs together in bed, travelling to places like New York, and Tobermory, doing Sudokus together on the couch, lots of Indian food, the occasional yoga class, moving in together and so much more, Mr. Knitting and I are planning a cozy Christmasy (it's a word!), vintage wedding in Toronto complete with many DIY projects (eek!) and lots of help from our amazing group of family and friends.
About Mrs. Knitting

Okay, we had left off with me planning to purchase a wedding cake and make a vegan dessert. New Plan. As I kept going through images for more cake inspiration I began to realize that the images I was most drawn to weren’t actually wedding cakes, but rather, wedding dessert buffets.

Here are a few examples:

Now instead of buying anything I’m going to ask a few family and friends to bake a dessert for the wedding. I love this plan. A lot. It’s more personal to us as a couple, it involves our guests, it’s cost effective, and it’s so much fun.

One of my favourite dessert inspirations came from Style Me Pretty and because I love it so much it is getting a bit of extra personalized attention:

That’s right, it’s a DIY cupcake bar!!! I am a big cupcake person. I know they’re a bit overexposed these days, but I don’t care. I still love them.

A DIY cupcake bar will definitely be making an appearance at the wedding. I’ve put my baby sister in charge of it and over the next 8 months she’s going to work her way through this book and we’re going to pick the three best cupcake and icing flavours. I’m so excited! I’ll keep you updated on the cupcake trials.

I know I’m not the first person to do away with a wedding cake. What other dessert options have you tried?

A DIY cupcake bar sounds fun! We added a dessert buffet at the last minute, and it was a hit!

I love that picture with the cakes in the book shelf! And a DIY cupcake bar is the best idea ever!

We had a DIY cupcake bar at our engagement party and it was awesome. My mom baked 120 cupcakes in various flavors, and made 4 different kinds of icing. It was a hit! The kids loved it, of course, but even all of the adults were really excited to try all the different flavor combos.

and even though the cupcakes will be vegan I’ll also still be making another vegan dessert.

@chexmixDC: mmm I’m glad it was such a hit!

A DIY Cupcake bar!! That sounds like something I could go waaay overboard with (can you say “I want to try ALL the icings!”). That’s awesome though. And it’ll be fabulous to involve your sister like that! Testing cupcake recipes sounds like fun!

We are doing a dessert buffet! I want to do half bought, half homemade (since I will be unemployed by the time the wedding rolls around). Cakes, cookies, and brownies for just 50 people- I think it’s totally doable! I love the idea of a cupcake bar!

Awesome! We started out doing just a pie bar. Then we added in mini-milkshakes. Then, because I love to bake like you, I’m making a groom’s cake - in the shape of Texas with longhorn sugar cookies on it, thank you v. much Style Me Pretty for the inspiration. And then my FI said he was getting a special “surprise” cake for us. Don’t forget my mom is lobbying for cookies. So a dessert bar it is! I love the evolution.

I love that dessert bar on a bookshelf! So creative! Yum yum. Besides cupcakes, pies, and cookies, there’s always ice cream sundaes!

@OctPumpkin: Mini-milkshakes sound wonderful!
@Miss Lobster: I love the idea of ice cream sundaes, but not so much for my winter wedding.
