Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!

My OTHER Ring!

June 17th, 2010 @ 8:13 am by Mrs. Cardigan

Okay, okay, I know I haven’t actually shared photos of my engagement ring yet, but I promise I’ll share soon. Today I want to talk about the ring I wear on my right hand… my beloved Aggie ring!

What’s an Aggie ring, you say? Never heard of it? Many people haven’t, so don’t feel bad. This is what an Aggie ring looks like:

That is, of course, not MY ring – I just wanted to get a good detail shot so you can see what it really looks like up close and personal. Aggie rings are a HUGE tradition here at A&M. It’s a class ring, which isn’t really all that important at most colleges, but we take our traditions very seriously here!

So, today I’m going to share the fun and exciting story of the day I got my Aggie ring!

It all started on the morning of November 13th, when I went to my best friend (and bridesmaid!), Audrey’s house to make shots. Why shots? Well, let me tell you about it. There’s another tradition at A&M (I’m telling you, we’re all about the traditions over here) that when you get your ring you are supposed to “dunk” it. Usually, this dunking is done in a pitcher of beer. You simply drop the ring in, set a timer, and go. (Here is a video of a typical ring dunk that I found on YouTube, in case you’re curious.) Usually there is a lot of puking involved in ring dunks, for obvious reasons. Then you go out to Northgate (Our tiny town’s version of Austin’s Sixth Street) and party ’til you drop. Fun, right?

Well, to be honest, I do not drink beer. At all. Hate the stuff. And, puking? Not a fan. So, an alternate tradition is to do shots – the same number as the last two numbers in the year you’re graduating. I’m graduating in 2010… so 10 shots. Gulp. (I’m seriously curious what people who graduated in 1999 did??!). But now you’re asking “Miss Cardigan, you say you don’t want to get drunk off a pitcher of beer, so instead you do SHOTS? How is that any better?” Well, my friends, I’ll let you in on a little secret: We cheated. We’re both pretty small girls and we did NOT want to get completely wasted (we’d like to remember our night, thank you!) so we watered down the shots. A lot. We probably took about 5 or 6 total. And they were mixed shots. Don’t tell anyone!

So, the morning of our ring day, we made shots!

Getting them ready!

We kept them all in their soup pot and put it in the fridge for safe-keeping! That’s about half of them.

The special shot glasses – the ones for our last shot, the ones we’d be dropping our rings into!

So, with all 20 (20!!) shots made, we went about the rest of our day, waiting anxiously because we weren’t going to be able to pick up our rings until 6:15 that evening. My sister and cousin came into town to celebrate with me, so we spent the day hanging out, and we all had dinner with Audrey’s family before we went to get the rings. Then, it was finally time!

Before we picked them up, sad because our fingers were still naked…

Presenting our rings to each other. We had a serious case of the giggles, if you can’t tell!

I got it!!!

Mr. Cardigan was very excited for me! (He gets his this year!)

After we picked up our rings, we headed back home for a little hanging out before the dunk! And then, at 10:00 that night (see a theme here? 10 shots… 10:00 PM… 2010?)… we dunked!

Getting ready. Do we look terrified? ‘Cause we are. (Photo taken by Audrey’s mom)

We did it!!! (Photo taken by Audrey’s mom)

So, after the dunk we headed out to Northgate to hang out with our friends, celebrate our new rings, and just generally party ’til we dropped. :)

With our friend, Ellie.

So, there’s the story of my right-hand ring. It’s incredibly special to me, and I plan to wear it for a VERY long time.

Do you have a special ring other than your engagement ring? I want to hear about it!

I like the dunking idea! Even though it isn’t a huge tradition at FSU, I got my ring the summer before senior year. They’ve got the school torches on in the center stone and before you graduate you wear the torches facing you. At graduation, when you turn your tassel, you turn the ring around and face the torches out to symbolize that you’re ready to face the world or some jazz like that. :) I absolutely love mine and wear it constantly. I worked hard for that sucker! If you want to see it, copy this link: http://ww2.balfour.com/ORP/default.aspx?sec=rings&id=FL87358
My ring is the gold one at the top right of the second picture.

WHOOP! Good for you! I dunked my ring in a giant pilsner glass–no pitcher for me! Congratulations on getting 1/2 of the most important pieces of jewelry in an Aggie’s life! ;-)

http://www.balfour.com/College/College/Configurator.aspx?m=VA82278-B333XS&PLId=16&Store=BK06942&ringID=59704 My ring is the Laurel, without anything on the sides of the ring. I’ve worn mine everyday since I got it in 2006! Btw, I’m sure you’ve heard this, but you look very similar to Emma Roberts!

I LOVE this post!!! It is so fun to see all the Aggie posts you do. I dunked my ring in 2006 in 2:06 - how weird is that! Gig ‘em, girl!

@mimi06d: That’s a fun tradition! We’re supposed to turn our rings out when we graduate too, but I don’t think we have any special ceremony!@Violachap: I couldn’t get the link to work. :( And I’ve actually never heard that! I usually get told I look like Amanda Peet :)

Hmmm. I’ll have to ask my lone aggie friend (he is so embarrassed to be seen around us Baylor Bears sometimes) what he did when he got his ring.

Aw, one of my best friends is an Aggie, and I’m always jealous of her gorgeous ring and the tradition going with it!

No Aggie ring (or ring from my own college), but I still wear my high school class ring on my right hand. There’s only been one time since i got it 8 years (wow!) ago that it’s left my finger for an extended time.

I L-O-V-E my right hand ring! I’ve always had one… on my 18th birthday my parents gave me an emerald (birthstone) and diamond ring that I wore every single day until I received my college class ring. We generally receive this ring at some point during senior year, and then after graduation you have an alumni from the school who is extremely close to you turn it. Having my brother turn my ring was so memorable and I plan to wear this ring forEVER! (And pass down the emerald ring to a daughter of mine someday!)

Whooop! I’m so excited to be reading about an Aggie wedding on here! Do you have a grooms cake picked out yet? We had a Bonfire cake and it was amazing! Sorry if I jumped the gun a bit. ;)

Love it!! I dunked my Aggie ring, with my MOH on the back porch of Northgate (back when you could drink there).

We did it in beer, paid to keep the pitchers from the Chicken, and had all of our friends sign it. The pitcher currently holds our kitchen utensils haha.
