Mrs. Cardigan's Picture
Mrs. Cardigan, Austin Age and Occupation: 21, Student/Soon-to-be Special Education Teacher Fiance's Age and Occupation: 20, Student/Soon-to-be Accounting Systems Analyst Engagement Date: August 16, 2009 Wedding Date: January 2011 Venue: Vintage Villas About Me: I'm a native Austinite who was raised as a die-hard Aggie. Luckily, I'm a pretty persuasive girl because I managed to convince my high school boyfriend (now fiance!), Mr. Cardigan, to ditch his hardcore Longhorn ways and join me up at A&M, where we currently reside with our adorable dogs, Cullen & Ranger. We're currently planning a bright, cheery wedding with a ridiculous amount of DIY projects that I can't wait to tackle! I love crafting in any form, reading, and margaritas (I think I love them the most!). Organization is what keeps me sane and I love helping others, which is probably why I ended up as an education major. It gets a little chaotic sometimes when you're planning a wedding among all of the papers, projects, finals, and certification exams, but we're having the time of our lives and we can't wait to get started on our journey as husband and wife - and we're so excited to share our wedding with the hive!
About Mrs. Cardigan

I Now Pronounce You… Self… and… Self? : wedding austin relationships 13 1

(Source) Who needs a groom?

This may be one of the most random things I’ve ever heard of, but here it goes:

I was getting my hair cut the other day, and I got to talking about weddings with my hair stylist. She told me that a few years ago her cousin (get ready for this) married herself.

Um, excuse me?

Yes. She had a ceremony, a dress, an officiant, vows, the whole works. She married herself. Needless to say, I was VERY intrigued, so I began to do a little research on the topic, and apparently… it’s much more common than I ever would have guessed!

I Now Pronounce You… Self… and… Self? : wedding austin relationships 2 2

(Source) (Warning, site may not be safe for work)

Apparently, it’s a sort of symbolic thing saying that you love yourself and will always put yourself first. From what it sounds like, most people don’t take it quite as literally as my hairdresser’s cousin – for most, it’s simply making a list of things you “vow” to yourself, and that’s that. But some people like to go all out.

I found quite a few articles on the subject – including a few people willing to perform the ceremony!

So hive, what do you think? Would you marry yourself?

Uh, weird…I would feel very strange inviting all my loved ones to a ceremony where I marry myself! To each her (or his) own, I guess…

Uh, no. Well making a list of things that I consider important to me and whatnot–maybe but to me it’s kinda silly. Now going full out with vows, dress, ceremony, etc—-uhhh, what for?!

I’m a horrible person, I’d never marry myself (even if I were a hypothetical other person) :)

There was actually a Lifetime Movie where the main character decided to marry herself. http://www.mylifetime.com/movies/i-me-wed

This reminds me of the Sex and the City episode when Carrie is annoyed she went to a baby shower but then her shoes were taken and the hostess/mom wouldn’t pay her back for her shoes so she sent a note saying she was marrying herself and “registered” at Manolo Blahnik.

I get the concept of vowing to be a strong, independent person and always put yourself first, but to go through a whole ceremony of it seems a little excessive…

I can definitely see a situation where you’ve been asked one too many times when you’ll get married…when you’ve spent thousands of dollars and all your vacation days schlepping to weddings week after week after week…when you’re content with the life you’ve built for yourself and don’t feel like there’s a significant other “missing” from it…I can absolutely see wanting a day to be able to say to everyone, “look, I’m with ME, and my life is full and complete. You can stop trying to set me up, you can stop asking me how dating is going, and just this one time, YOU can take time off to focus on ME. YOU can give ME presents. And I can absolutely guarantee this will not end in divorce.”

Yeah, I can name at least two coworkers who are one well-meaning aunt away from doing this. One more nudge is all it’s going to take.

First thing I thought of was the lifetime movie!

I think this is a little weird, but I also think that the way we assume everyone ought to settle down two-by-two is pretty weird. So I’m all for celebrating singleness and the one person you’re 100% guaranteed to spend the rest of your life with.

I would totally marry my clone, though. It’s not that I’m narcissistic or anything, I’m just very much my own type!

I don’t like the idea of vowing to always put yourself first.

Not a huge fan of always vowing to put yourself first either… really, by preparing for marriage aren’t we all attempting to learn how to put the other person first anyways? Maybe that’s why it sounds so odd to all of us!

@MissLobster
I love that episode! It always makes me so mad though that her shoes were taken.

I would not marry myself as I need someone to balance me and to do the things that I am not good at…like remodeling, relaxing…that sort of thing.
Two is always better than one.
