This is the final part to this series, I swear. Anyway, as I left off in the last post of this series… Mr E and I had to live apart in different countries for quite a while. But we made it work. Somehow.
California ‘08
California ‘09… we were driving along and we thought this sign looked funny.
At the end of 2009, Mr E was accepted into a photography degree programme here in NZ. He went through the visa process and everything (so nerve-racking!), and in February 2009 we were finally reunited… for more than a 3 week slot this time!
So now we not only live in the same town, but in the same building block. We can cook together, watch TV together, go on dates with each other… do everything that we missed doing so much when it was long distance. I definitely don’t miss those days.
On Valentine’s Day this year, which was only a few days after we reunited, Mr E took me out to Lonestar for dinner (mmm their portions are AWESOME!). I had guessed that he was going to ask me a *very important* question on Valentine’s Day so it was so hard not to drop little hints! We had been “unofficially” engaged since the last time I was in California but I knew we both badly wanted to make it official.
Us at Lonestar on V Day… see Mr E’s cheesecake? It is the size of my face!
It didn’t happen at dinner, but after we got back home Mr E asked me if I wanted to take a little walk because it was still light out (daylight savings and summertime in NZ). We got to this little grassy area on a hill where you can see across almost the whole of our town. Then I turned around to walk back and Mr E tugged on the back of my hoodie. I turned around and he had a ring box in his hand, and before he could even get down on his knee or show me the ring, I made a happy squeak and basically throttled him with a hug around his neck.
“Wait,” he said. “Don’t you want to see the ring first before you say yes?”
“You doofus!” (I said, because I’m so nice.) “Like that will change my mind!”
But I let him do the knee thing and he showed me the ring… and WOW! Apparently his mother was nervous about him choosing the ring without my input… but she didn’t need to because that ring is perfect for me.
Sapphires are my favourite stone and I think the setting is very sweet and a little bit different. *happy sound*
So, that is how Mr E moved countries to be with me, how we got engaged, and how we started this crazy journey to our wedding, and our new life together.
I can’t let you go without seeing a photo of the ring, obviously:
Perfect, yes? Photo by Mr E
(all other photos in this post are personal ones taken by us or relatives)
Did you become “unofficially engaged” before making it official?
