Second Guessing My Dress

June 17th, 2010 @ 11:48 am by Mrs. Knitting

I have a very definite type when it comes to wedding dresses. I like delicate lacey dresses, with cap sleeves and interesting backs. For some good examples see this post.

That being said, since buying my incredible and lovely wedding dress I’ve come across two different dresses that aren’t my style at all, but for some reason I’m completely drawn to them.

The first is a dress by Shank, a Toronto store that specializes in these gorgeous and very theatrical one-of-a-kind pieces. Their stuff is very wild, and while I can appreciate the craftsmanship, is generally not my style at all. However, when I saw this dress at a wedding show I was completely fascinated by it:

This dress is definitely not my style, but I love it. It looks even better in person because it has this fantastic flowing quality. I think my favourite part is the colour. I love how it looks as though the bride stepped in ink or something and the colour began to slowly seep upwards.

The second dress was designed by Joy from Joy’s Theatricals. Joy is a former costume designer who now rents and sells her beautiful designs out of her tiny store on Davenport in Toronto. I stopped in one day as I was passing by and I fell in love with this beauty (the pinkish one in the middle):

I’m sorry I don’t have a better image of it, as it is a really lovely dress. Again, the thing that attracted me was the colour. The dress is this gorgeous pale pinky-mauve. I’d never really thought about that colour before, but as soon as I saw the dress I fell completely in love.

I never really thought about wearing a different shade than white, but perhaps I should have.

Ultimately, I’m still happy with my dress and would definitely choose the same dress over again, although I do think it’s really interesting how I was drawn to these two dresses, since they really are so far from my usual style.

Have you ever been drawn to an unexpected dress? What was it?

Yes! I totally love my dress, but after I purchased it (and was waiting for it to come) sometimes I’d see long dresses… which I never even considered buying… and think “oooh that’s so cute!” But sticking with your gut is always best :)

Yes! When deciding on what dresses I wanted to try on, my criteria was strapless. I also wanted a structured mermaid dress. After trying on a bunch of dresses and not feeling “like a bride” I tried on one that was nothing like I had wanted. Monique Lhuillier Scarlet. Its all lace, has cap sleeves, a keyhole back, and a sheath style. Me and my mom both started crying and we bought the dress. Sometimes I still feel a pang in my stomach because I thought I really wanted strapless but I know that I made the right decision.

That first dress you posted is swoon-worthy. I love ombre and have thought it was a such a fun, romantic choice since I saw photos of Gwen Stefani’s dress, though I love the one you posted even more!

My dress totally took me by surprise. I had my mind set on one and on a whim I tried on another dress and it just blew me away.
My dress is Light gold by Alfred Angelo (it is a champagne color). I always thought I wanted Ivory.

I had the same problem, I knew I wanted something with lace and cap sleeves, and I love the dress that I got, but I tried on this dress beforehand and I just looked like a total 40’s bombshell, I was taken aback. But at 4k (!) I cried a little inside and tried to forget about her. Luckily for me there’s no pics of it online for me to pout at :P

I love both of your choices. I definitely picked a dress that was nothing like what I always imagined wearing :)

Miss Knitting! Omigosh, you’ve just shown me the answer to my prayers! I must have rushed through my google reader when you last talked about dresses but when I went back to look at that post and checked out Lea Ann Belter (bc I LOVED everything you posted), I fell in love. Thank you SO MUCH for introducing me to her designs!

That first dress is INSANE - gorgeous and unique on the right bride. Agree with someone who posted above - very Gwen Stefani/Galliano.

I’m a diehard mermaid girl, but was coaxed into an empire waist (!!! - the anti-mermaid) gown with a heavily beaded bodice and accordion pleated silk to the floor….DIE. If I were having an elegant, ballroom wedding it would’ve been THE choice…so funny how that happens…

They are both so pretty- I totally get it! It’s a pull between staying true to how you normally dress/what you normally like and wanting to go all out and do something dramatic and gorgeous :)
