I'm planning a half-destination wedding on the beautiful island of Oahu - imagine a plethora of movies, art and games; savory Hawaiian food; blended Chinese and Japanese cultural details; lush, fragrant tropical flowers and all the air conditioning a NorCal native could want! And once I marry the love of my life, we'll come back to the 'mainland' to party it up all over again in my hometown of Salinas, the salad-bowl capital of the world!

Table Identification, Take One

June 18th, 2010 @ 7:00 pm by Mrs. Sewing

A while back, I talked about how we’d “number” our tables. In summary, I wanted to use location names from a certain computer game Mr. Sew and I spent abhorrent amounts of time playing together.

Then I got a little frustrated finding appropriate images, and started questioning the whole idea. It took more time than I should have spent, but eventually we finished enough for 13 tables.

I tried to add some funny captions, but I think it was a fail. Some of the references are really obscure, and some aren’t even references at all.

As cute as Maple images are (don’t they just give you the biggest gaming cravings? I die!), I’m really uneasy about using these for our table names. This is mainly because they are really, really pixelated when blown up. Also, the names are a bit small and might be hard to read. And there’s really no explanation for any of the images. They are all pretty random. I don’t know how we’d explain them anyway, other than “this is a game we used to play all day in college instead of studying”. We may have meaningful in-game moments, but I wouldn’t expect the average non-gamer to understand that.

But never fear! Right after finishing these I thought of a new idea, and after running it past Mr. Sew, we feel it will be a better option. Think of it as a complete 180 from the cute gamer images, but still just as nerdy (if not more).

Did you finish a project only to toss it out for something else?

I’ve never played Maplestory (we’re a WoW couple) but it looks like the cutest thing ever! I might have to try it out now. Anyways, I think the table names are awesome and I completely understand showcasing the in-game moments. I’m extremely excited to see the new, possibly nerdier table names though!

I found these interesting (and cute and funny!) and read through them all as well. As an ex-WoW player, I totally know where you are coming from. But I also understand your concerns about people who don’t game at all “getting it”.

I totally not a gamer, but think these are really cute! Maybe you’ll think of some back-up use for them (one where you can print them smaller so they’re not pixelated)

LOL.. i had to click on your blog when I saw MS.. I never got my rogue far enough along to get totally addicted to it *whew*

They’re totally adorable and would have been so cute as table numbers. I figure it’s your wedding, if it means something to you, you should have kept it. I can understand the pixelation issue though..

if you already printed those out though, you can always put them as a collage in a picture frame to hang up on the wall. Or even use them as your guess book (collage them into a large picture frame with really wide white borders for people to sign on).

Ahh I love these, so cute! But my fiancé and our roommate and I all used to play maple story too, so maybe I am biased…haha!

hehe, I’m glad some of you understand!

@HolyVowels: I haven’t played second life before, but I think the beauty of all mmo’s is the in-game interaction you can have with others :) some friends of ours actual met playing another mmorpg, and they got married a year or so ago! so sweet!
@Aug2010bride: ohh, good ideas!
